  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RELEASED: RED Final Cut Studio 2 Installer

another thing:
How come Final Cut tells me I have tape and file based clips when I go to batch capture? I've deleted everything but the red footage- the sound, the music, even the damn titles. No effects whatsoever either.

I got pretty excited last week about having that whitepaper to read- felt like I could really bite into this plan... still hoping it works.

Are you supposed to keep all your media on a Red Raid through the editing?!

Are you supposed to keep all your media on a Red Raid through the editing?!

Your RedDrive footage should be laid off to at least two separate storage devices as soon as practical.

I don't think it's a good idea to put more hours on the RedDrive while thrashing it about in an edit session.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

No, no, to be clear, my footage is copied to 3 hard drives and LTO tape. I cleared the RED drive five times over the course of shooting the picture, backing it up each day, sometimes more than once a day. I'm just trying to figure out this recapture and so far have had little success getting FCP to recognize that all the media is in the exact same spot I originally Log and Transfer-ed it from.
What I said about keeping the footage on the RED raid was not meant as a suggestion, but in shock if such were the case.

Is anybody else finding that since the new installer the 'quality' setting under the RT drop-down in the FCP time-line has no effect? On both my Mac Pro (8-core 3GHz) and MacBook Pro (2.8GHz) the medium and low settings all work the same as high, so none can achieve full frame rate playback.

I'm having this issue too. What Build clips are you testing? I wiped my system thinking it was a setting that went wrong somewhere... still no full framerate playback. I'm on a Mac Pro 8-core 3GHz with 16GB of RAM & RAID 5. Tested on a MBP dual 2.16GHz with 2GB RAM and an external RAID 0 drive... still dropped frames. I'm guessing that a lot of people are using this with their setting at Dynamic for frame rate.

I have a question:

I am doing the log and transfer thing (using the prores workflow) and was thinking if there is a problem if I choose to transfer just a part of a clip, like doing in and out marks. Does anyone had any trouble reingesting the native media later? Or should I transfer the clip as a whole?

Yes I tried trashing my FCP prefs and removing 3rd party codecs too. Didn't help. I'm on an 8-core 3GHz with 8 drive SCSI U320 RAID 5.

I've gone back to some older footage to test, and that doesn't show the issue, so possibly the problem is with the build 17 footage I was using. Maybe the 'Max' check-box issue if that is on by default. Need to investigate further, but it seems maybe if 'Max' was selected when the footage was shot, then the RT quality setting in FCP has no effect.

Hey Jeremy have you found a solution to the dropped frames in the timeline?

I played around with this a little more and here is what I've found so far. On our octo-core 3.0GHz MacPro with 8GB of RAM running off a Dulce ProDQ set up in RAID 5, ulimited RT on, frame rate set to full and quality set to low, I can get real-time playback of 4k 16x9 REDCODE 36 footage from build 16 with no problem, but not with build 17 footage. However I can get it to playback on our other MacPro with an almost identical set-up. The only difference is that this one is running the newer 3.2GHz Harpertown processors, compared to the 3.0GHz Clovertown processors on the other system. So my guess is that the extra processing power of this system is able to do the decode of the the build 17 footage in real-time where as the other system can not. Another thing to note is that I've only tested build 17 footage that was shot with "MAX" enabled on the camera. When I get some time, I'll shoot a little bit of test footage with "MAX" disabled and see if this changes anything. The only thing that's throwing me here is that the footage plays back fine in the viewer, but not from the timeline. Which makes it seem as though the system actually can do the decode fast enough. Any insight from the Red Team would be greatly appreciated. Rob, Graeme, Craig???

Nick,

Will the clips playback in the Viewer?

Yeah I can't get Build 17 to playback at Full Frame Rate at all... not with low, med, high or dynamic Playback Video Quality settings in RT. What type of video card are you using? I'm using the ATI Radeon X1900. I will try disabling Max today and see if I have any luck.

Thanks for your response Jeremy. It seems we are all having the same issues. Right now I cannot get any Build 16 clips shot at 4K 16:9 to playback on my system. I'm sure those clips were shot at the Max setting though. I am receiving playback at 4: 2:1 on Build 16 at Full/Low. As Nick stated I don't see any difference in quality when I switch between Low, Medium or High Playback Video Quality. I thought I was having an hardware problem but this is seeming more like a software issue relating to the Max setting. Will try to verify today.

UPDATE:

On Build 17 with Max disabled... I'm getting Playback Frame Rate: Full and Playback Video Quality: Medium

Before I couldn't playback any Build 17 clips at full frame rate. So this issue definitely seems to be related to enabling "MAX" on the RED ONE. I 've also noticed that when Playback Video Quality is switched between Low, Med or High that you do see a corresponding change in image quality. This was not happening before.

The "MAX" setting option wasn't enabled until build 17, so that can't be the issue you are having with your build 16 footage. I can get build 16 16x9 REDCODE 36 footage to playback fine on both systems. It's just build 17 footage that I'm having the problem with.

Disabling "MAX" has allowed me to use Build 17 clips at Full/Medium RT settings. I thought Build 16 had the MAX function too... guess I was wrong. In any case Disabling "MAX" is the solution to getting Full playback frame rates on Build 17 for me.

Can someone from RED explain how enabling or disabling the "MAX" box affects image quality or real time decode?

Hey Jeremy the clips that I tested were shot in 4K 2:1. When playing back 4K 16:9 clips shot with "MAX" disabled it wouldn't play without dropping frames at even the lowest setting of Full/Low. So to clarify: 4K 2:1 clips shot with "MAX" disabled I'm getting Full/Medium playback in RT settings. To get Full/Medium I also had to disable external monitoring on my AJA card.

Somebody on another board pointed out why the Kona slows things down...it's resizing 2048 to 1920 on the fly, and it has to use the CPU to do so.

A Kona 3 will do it in hardware without a slowdown, with the newest 6.0 drivers.

Thanks Andrae. When I get a chance I'll test some 4k 16x9 build 17 footage.

Thanks Nate! I've been eyeing a Kona 3 card for a while now made a purchasing mistake when I got the Kona LHe. I've also found out that using the 30" display will cause more dropped frames than say a 23".

Thanks Andrae. When I get a chance I'll test some 4k 16x9 build 17 footage.

Be sure to let us know what results you get... as stated I can't get Build 17 4K 16:9 clips to playback at full frame rate. Would love to know if this is possible on a Mac Pro 3GHz.

are you guys getting native full playback frame rate without having to render on the timeline? or full frame rate playback in the viewer window?
i can get full playback on the timeline rendering the clips but that is a pain in the ass!
settings are build 17 4kHD (max disabled)
mac pro 8 core 3.2Ghz 8 gig ram aja kona 3 card
rt unlimited playback full
quality, low
cheers

Tony,

Yes we are getting native Full frame rate playback without having to render on the timeline. 4K HD has been reported to having problems in this thread. Make sure the "MAX" setting on your RED ONE camera is also turned off.

On a Mac Pro 8 core with 16GB RAM and a RAID 5 (4x750GB)... I'm getting Full/Medium RT setting playback of 4K 2:1 clips. I had to turn off external monitoring on the AJA LHe card to achieve this. When I import the clip the timeline bar is orange not red. With 4K 16:9 clips shot with "MAX" disabled I cannot get full frame rate playback. Full/Low creates drop frames. It seems to me many people are playing back their footage without regards to full frame rate playback at RT settings such as dynamic/dynamic. This can be confusing since it will make less experience people think that it is normal to get full frame rate playback.

Best of luck in getting it working,
Andrae
