  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Released: R3D Data Manager for Mac v5.2

My laptop is booked in for some apple care - I know it's a serious problem!

Ok - here's another question:

If I copy a couple of hundred RDC folders, and two of them fail, and then (let's say accidentally) quit R3D Data manager, is there any way to find out which two folders failed?

Thanks,

Ross

Absolutely. There are 2 ways.

The easy/quick way would be to open up the log file in ~/Library/Application Support/R3D Data Manager/Logs/ and search for "Error". R3D Data Manager starts a new log file each time you start the program, and the date is included in the file name. Most likely it would be the last file in the folder.

The secure/longer way would be to set the destination as a source and check the checksums.

Both methods will get you what you need to know. Then delete the RDC folders, set the RDC option to ignore and copy again. It will only copy those RDC folders.

I know some people think "its just a copy program", but I hope this discussion shows how using R3D Data Manager can speed up your workflow and provide advanced options not available with other programs.

Hi Conrad,

R3D Manager only works under my main admin user account on my MacBook. When I log into another user account on the same MacBook, it asks for registration and when I provide it, it says invalid. Is this by design? I assumed I was buying a license for one Macbook, not one user account on one MacBook. This is proving a bit inconvenient today. Maybe I am doing something wrong?

On a related note, what if I want to unregister the license and put it on a different computer? For example, if the Mac crashes or I sell it or upgrade the HD?

By the way, the program is working great!

Thanks

I have several Macs setup with several OSs on each and several user accounts per OS. Ive not had an issue registering R3D Data Manager for any of the users. I know several others who have several different logins (rental machines) who use the same technique without issue.

Make sure you are using the correct registration key for the version you are trying to register. Each major version is different. You can always get a key to any version at http://www.r3ddata.com/order/resend/

Also make sure you are typing it exactly as shown, in the English character set. Spacing and capitalization count.

Thanks.

HI, I've using this app since it came out with no problems. Then on a recent shoot we were shooting on cards and when it copied the cards the program said there were errors. I checked those files it had copied and they and they alone were all green frames. Also could not get any red apps to read them. I used the red undead rescue function to get the clips back after formating them and it got the clips back. Then i used the finder to copy and those "problem files" . They copied just fine and opened up in qt and all the red apps. When back to the camera house to test and after quite some time and alot of testing with 3 different lexar fw800 readers got it to happen again. The files copy fine with finder but not with R3d manager. Drives seemed to copy fine the rest of that shoot. This happened with a bunch of cards on this shoot no drives though.... Whats up. I was using the latest version of this app a week ago with easta drives.

I replied to your email a week or so back and never heard a response. It sounds like you found a bad piece of hardware, which is what would cause this issue. Ive heard of others simply swaping the firewire cable and the issue is solved. Ive had a conversation with Red where they concluded that on a particular show if the firewire reader was in sunlight it would produce errors.

However, if there are errors, you should never treat it like the copied footage is fine. There is a specific button to retry the footage that did not transfer correctly that only appears when there are errors. Most likely if you had tried it again, it may have transferred fine. At the very least you shouldnt have formatted the CF cards until the copied footage was known good.

There is a small issue with firewire readers that affect all copied material. If your firewire reader cant read the data twice to produce identical results, then you may want to try another reader.

The whole point of doing a three-read system and using checksums is to ensure that your data is copied correctly. Finder doesnt do any checking, so the errors may be there but you wouldnt know without the checksums.

I found that green Frame issue while using Snow Leopard / e-sata Sonnet Pro express card / e-sata to CF reader. I disregarded it and immediately pinpointed the Sonnet Pro as the problem. And used a Lexar FW800 reader instead. My E-sata CF readers never have an issue unless used through Sonnet's Marvell Chipset Express card. (I had to use the Sonnet because it was the only card available for 10.6 a few weeks ago.

As a note to others: DO not buy the Sonnet Pro. Its really not a good card. Its expensive and really buggy. I consistently get kernel Panics and stalled transfers.

We really want a Jmicron363 which is natively supported by Mac OS X, I have tons of these on My HacPro's and they work great.

I ordered the PC version about a year ago. Is that EVER going to happen?

I just got a note from our development team that they completed some of the last bugfixes. Im just about to start the testing procedure now. Im pushing to have it on the CD at REDucation, though, having a version that is bug-free is more important.

I apologize about the wait, you havent yet been charged any money. Ill be contacting all the registration requests just before shipping to confirm their status. If you want, I can send out our last beta version to anyone who requests it, to prove we ARE working on it! (just dont use it on real footage - for testing only!)
