  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Release It Already

Not sure if patents have anything to do with the delay but I can tell you that unless RED can nail down some patents in either the design or functionality (or both) of Scarlet (if/when) it's released, they'll get sued or beaten in the market place by the big boys.
That's a dilemma I know well. That and the fact that the economics of rolling Scarlet right now are poor. Maybe in Q1 2013.

Wait what? Why would they get sued for their own designs and own camera? The whole point of this company is to make the best digital cinema tools ever, and some of those big boys are using RED for their features. They will make money off of Scarlet if they released it now. I do not see RED waiting until 2013, by then they will be making products for "today", not tomorrow.

do you not think RED is a big boy? Because when I think of professional designers making tools for professional film makers, I think RED

I'd be interested in you elaborating on what you mean...no hostility or anything, but clarification would be helpful

Like who? I can't think of one feature that the "big boys" have taken from RED.

Even HDR motion has been on Panasonic for nearly 2 years.

Dynamic stretch is not really HDR. It is more a built in tone mapping compression.

Have you even used it or are you just quoting Graeme's post?
It works, it boosts DR, it looks good...

To quote Barry Green "It's one of those functions that can be pretty amazing, or not, depending on the circumstances. It works by taming the highlights and gaining up the shadows. But what's really crafty about it is that it doesn't do it globally to the whole picture, it only does it where it's needed -- so it's sort of like having an individual iris over every pixel almost."

It doesn't extend the normal DR range of the sensor. It is a single exposure process that retains shadow and highlight detail by compressing it into the normal HD broadcast dynamic range. Reduce gain on near clip highlights and increase gain in deep shadows selectively.
Does it work? Sure for what it does.

Is there any new update on Fixed Scarlet? Is it going to be available in October, November? I really can't stand the wait..

.... I really can't stand the wait..

Out of order.:willy_nilly: I have already started screaming for her release for good behaior. I appreciate your sentiment but the judge has made his ruling to keep her indefinalely...

PSSST. Don't tell anyone but I plan to break her out of jail real soon... Wait a minute did anyone else read this? Disregard that statement.:coolgleamA:

Scarlet […] Maybe in Q1 2013.

I suggest sport. Outdoor.

I think this thread will still be going for at least the next 8-12 months... :(
I also think that the RED DEFENDERS (all those who think RED is the second coming) will slap my wrist for saying that.

I'm not sure I get the point of this thread.
Don't you need a finished field tested prototype and production facilities to "release it"??
What's there to release is probably un-releasable at this point.

I'm sure Scarlet will rock when it does get done, but I'm not sure what the point is of demanding a release other then pent up personal frustration of uknown origin. You have to ask yourself, is it the camera you're waiting for, or something in your own inaction or inertia that calls for significant movement?

This thread should have been created after the release of epic. We all know that scarlets will not be released until the epics are shipping.

Exactly... So release it already.

It really puzzles me why it's taking all this long when RED is already developing HDR modes and so on. Sometimes I think they spend too much time with the icing on the cake when you can't even buy the cake.

My hope is that the basic design between EPIC and Scarlet is similar, so Scarlet can hit right after EPIC with no further delays.

People hear "prototype" and they think it's close. Remember the 80/20 rule. Takes 20% of the time to get to 80% finished, but it takes 80% of the time to finish that remaining 20% of the product.

It seems that a lot of folks on reduser look at the scarlet in hand, out in the wild and shooting footage and they use that as a gauge on how close it might be to delivery. There is a whole lot of complexity going on there with these features that are not 100% done, manufacturing and supply chain, sales & distribution, support, accessories, etc. It's a lot of stuff.
