  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedWideGamutRGB: discuss!

Is this available in post only or will it ever be an in camera option to replace Dragoncolor2?

Hey Jake, try the latest version of LUTCalc.

What good would that do? They created a proper Red Wide Gamut viewing LUT before Red released theirs to go with the new SDK?
Here is what he the developer said:
"Just after I had submitted the v2.5 update to the App Store, I had a couple of emails, one asking about Canon C-Log3 and the other RED's REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10. To be honest I wasn't aware of either, but having been filled in I have added them as options.
The response curves fit with available documentation, so I have included them in this update (hence v2.53), but as I am not a regular RED or these days Canon user, it would be great to hear from those who are. The correct range settings in particular would be really useful."
Seems to me, he's guessing the response curve based on the available information so far. But guessing and knowing is not quite the same thing...

LutCalc is upto V2.54, in the app store he talks about updating Red Log3G10 to V2 whatever that means. Seems to be getting me way closer to seeing the potential of RWG, just been messing around in Resolve and the color reproduction vs Dragon Color2 etc seems pretty impressive.
Pretty nice little app for $3.

What exact version number of DaVinci features RWG and 3G10? The latest download? Even Lite?

Here's some vectorscope screenshots of a Chromadumonde chart, shot on dragon (this is just from a exposure test, so the chart was not super accurate)
But you can see how the rec709 and Dragoncolor line up pretty well, and how the cameraRGB and RedwidegamutRGB could definitely use a color transform...

RWG is not a display referred space, so yes, it needs a colour transform.

Yeah I know but no-one is using REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10 yet so it's just to help you quickly visualize content, while we wait for the final recipe to be ready! ;)

I did this using LUTCalc, you can try it if you want:

Let us know! ;)

I did a test with this, applying it to my HDR test footage and did some HDR balancing at 5600K. Looks a bit bluer than normal, but before we have a real LUT and proper workflow we don't know. This was done very fast so I haven't tweaked the images to look especially good in some cases. Still, it looks promising when checking in Resolve :)

I guess I'm a little confused. Couldn't you roll your own curves with RWG/Log3G10 and grade to taste on whatever type monitor you have (appropriate for the final viewing space, of course) without the new viewing transform over top, similar to how you'd grade starting from REDlogFilm?

Or, is that not advisable? I get why the transform is important for those times when a one-click REC 709 (or whatever) look is desired. Other than that, I'm at a loss.

Would it be necessary for the same reasons that people use the RED LUT Kit to go from REDlogFilm to the REDgammas when grading? Although I know people do it this way, I'm not sure why or when it makes sense.

Yes, you could grade from a RWG/Log3G10 base, but grading tools are not the appropriate ones to generate the math that properly maps from the RWG colour space to your monitor space. The existing Red colour spaces are already monitor referred so that transform isn't needed. With the new system it will be needed, and you'll also be able to "roll your own" if you feel like doing the math yourself.

Thanks.

I see...I think. I was thinking of the new transform as a new gamma space (I don't know why) but it's (re)mapping color. So, this approach is something we haven't seen before from RED.

There will be transforms from RWG/Log3G20 to and from ACES, so certainly they'll work with ACES.

As for comparison: ACES is a full system that works with multiple types of cameras and film too. RWG/Log3G10 is for Red cameras and is just a colour space and transfer curve.

Hello all,

We have created REDWideGamutRGB Log3G10 conversion LUTs into Rec.709, P3 and Rec.2020. Would that be something of an interest to public? If there's demand, we could release them to be freely publicly available.

Thank you.
