  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reduser noise, Professionals, and finding the information you want

Good Idea. Might be wise to limit contributors to owners of RED products.
Seems like a logical boundary.

Seems like a logical boundary.

No it doesn't.

It is in fact quite the opposite of logical. It is illogical, irrational, fallacious.

I don't own any RED products but have had to find my own workflow for a number of projects I've shot on RED. So too have a lot of the people who benefit from and contribute to this forum.

RED does not end in the camera. It continues all the way through to delivery.

What about:
- A professional colourist who works every day with Assimilate Scratch.....
- A professional DP who has shot 20+ projects on RED.....
- David Mullen ASC, who has extensively documented his experience shooting a feature on RED.....
- A professional technician at a camera hire place who extensively tests and troubleshoots their RED fleet.....

....Suppose none of them own any RED products. Does this preclude them from being potential contributors?

It's a rather narrow-minded outlook.

Honestly it's so frustrating that this point always comes up in these discussions.

I vote for a Wiki that anyone can add to, or post a corrected or expanded section, but older information can only be edited or replaced by an RED authorised moderator. And agree that RED needs to have a dedicated tech documentation writer to oversee this - that way it minimises adding to the workload of the existing R&D teams, while being a more reliable resource than a "pure" wiki.

Link the wiki to a sticky on REDuser that shows update headlines made to the Wiki by date.

Definitely need this as can no longer spend hours trawling through evey new Reduser post!

The problem with REDUSER noise has been a long problem.

I've been among those who asked for an weekly update of camera and workflow status edited by RED so we could follow the evolution without having to scroll through thousands of post every week.

The answer was this thread:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7464

By far not covering all needs of RED related problems and solutions.

In my understanding It's part of RED marketting strategy (I c'ant find any other objective reason). It's the drug to make a loyal community. Give them the belive they are special, and they can take actively part of this revolution.

WE ARE GETTING REDJUNKIES!

Patrick

PS: To get a working Wiki we would need a moderator who gets update evey week. Why not having this done on RED.com? Look at the FCP/Color problems, or the SDK, things have been announced and spread out by RED and then no more support from RED even with all the troubles.

Well, is it not up to anyone to start this Wiki-page/source?

In my view - REDs responsibilty stops with a good manual. I don't think we are there yet, however I don't think it is REDs responsibilty to develop/solve all postproductions problems on every single platform.

What boundaries would you suggest? Mods only?
Or anyone who happens to come along.

So - I think this may be my second post, but I completely agree.

I have been reading these forums quite a bit for the last month or so to get my head around the right move for myself and my budding company. I know it will be with Red, but as this is the cutting edge, I may bleed a bit less armed with a proper perspective.

I just got shootingred.com , shootingscarlet.com and shootingepic.com >> As soon as DNS has propagated I will install a Wiki on these domains and attempt to start populating.

Here is the thing. I do not own a Red, so I will do my best from my own research to get this started, but obviously if the group agrees with and chooses to use these sites I will need quite a bit of help. Stay tuned

... also feel free to call me out if this is out of line for a low post count in reduser.net

.. sorry to reply to my own post, but I will also offer a redirect if someone has a better or more established wiki.

I agree with Eric.

Although, I doubt someone from RED will get involved.

That will be the difficulty. Getting a dedicated moderator.

In general having an open editing policy fosters the highest quality documentation and a high rate of contribution. I know that there are issues in WikiPedia with controversial page edits but that is often because the subjects are controversial. Most the info on a RED wiki will be technical information and tips. I don't seeing it having the same level of constant controversy.

To foster a balance between moderated and unmoderated the wiki could have several areas. One that is more controlled (a moderated reference area). And, one that is more open to addition and editing.

Also, any good Wiki software is going to have complete version history and rollback ability. Users will have to be authenticated. In this case since we are not on politically or socially sensitive topics I don't see that people using their real names etc. is a problem. So there will be some community enforcement just via the configuration.

At this point reduser has an amazing amount of valuable information buried in its threads. Making that more usable and available via a wiki would be really great for everyone interested in RED (owners and potential owners)

Yes. This is absolutely correct.

Also, I have checked out the former RED Wiki. Ian and Paul did have something going over at www.redwiki.org. It looks like basically what we want, but it clearly never caught on.

As Eric said, it would have to be something officially endorsed/people pointed to by RED, linked to with a sticky on Reduser, and generally monitored by most of us.

Perhaps we should all go over to RED Wiki and clean a bunch of stuff up, in an effort to get it in shape to be "sticky" status.

How about mods and give them the power to make other people contributors if they can demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge/expertise?

All I'm saying is ownership of RED products is not a precursor to having said knowledge/expertise.

Great point.

I think a reasonable and doable solution is for 1-5 people to take on the responsibility to develop redhax and maintain it. They are responsible for living on reduser and taking what's useable/important and updating redhax with it. Only these people can edit it, but anyone can go there and search/view/etc.... but no posting. Post your (whatever) on reduser, get it answered here - it's posted there. Hopefully this would cut down on repeated threads...

I'm game...

Mr. Bloom, what do you think?

Ryan,

Redhax was plagued by spam and is actually currently down and moving to a new server next week. While there were definitely some great contributions to the site I found that after over a year of operation it never formed the community and critical mass needed to be really ubiquitous. Perhaps a site supported by Red directly might fare better. Red would have probably looked more favourably at the redhax site if it didn't have the word hacks in the title.

But I think it was an enlightening experiment that showed that this community thrives on back and forth communication rather than indirect collaboration. Writing a wiki is a lot of work. The guys with all the knowledge are pretty busy.

I monitor this site because of Crimson stuff, but a have to admit that I couldn't get through more than a page of the Dec. 3rd comments and in general find it hard to contribute because it's just so much stuff I could care less about. It's a tough thing because in the early days we all got educated essentially by this forum. One would not want that to stop.

In terms of authentication: One thing might be to verify users against reduser.net in order to prevent spam and garbage users. You would prob. want to ask reduser.net that this was OK. But, to get a wiki login you could auto-verify that they had a user profile on reduser.net OR do a hand verify.

some points.
1. red com./ reduser can support by banners/links. Not hard work. This will increase traffic. if you want to get real value and it happening fast, then contributers get discounts on red products or get to test beta items or some other kind of motivator...? At face value this may be seen as whatever but probably the lowest costing method of information dissemination available that doesn't have customers spending all their shooting hours wading through info and tearing their hair out. Personally i think this expense is worth it to a company in terms of having a source of reliable information rather than rumors and disinformation that competing companies can pounce on. In other words the extra sales generated will outperform the costs and the goodwill generated will increase branding.
2. There could be a system where those that have indexed reduser well could cut and paste the most relevant posts in the best threads to the wiki to save time? Like a "best of red user" wiki...
3. Should be indexed well and thoroughly cross linked to supporting documentation including user manual via opening in new tabs so there's non of this going backward and forwards stuff.
4. Iphone compatible.

Hey guys, if nobody wants to take over this project, we might be interested in doing so. We are already in the process of making something like this for our clients, that would seems logical to make it public since most of our infos is from public source anyway.

One way to prevent abuse/spam would be to not allow public registering, but go with an approval process, where a human has to manually approve any account request. That rules out bots, at the very least.

To help with the content, a general call can be made here on reduser.net, for everybody who has notes and direct links to stuff of interest can share it, then "all" that would be left would be the editorial part, which is far less than having to do both the research and the writing.

I can write ok, but english isn't my native language, might need peoples to look after me to correct typos/syntax/etc.

We already have notes ourselves, but could use the help from other for sure.

There is not *that much* good information on RedUser, what there is, is lots and lots of useless/inaccurate/outdated information. And cutting through it to get accurate information is what takes time and energy.

My 2¢.

A regulation system already exists in that when a post is important enough it becomes a sticky. Could this system be expanded to form the basis of the wiki?
A wiki of sticky's  so to speak.
