Hello Everyone,

for those that have been interested in seeing what REDucation is all about, the staff has put up a group of pix that tell the story pretty well...

http://www.reducation.net/testimonials.html

We are prepping for the next class in Vegas now, from April 8th to 12th. Registration is open to sign up, if you are interesting in being part of the class

I just got off the phone with Michael Cioni, one of the lead instructors about some of the latest developments with the M-X RED ONEs and how much of that we plan on covering in this next class... I'll let him fill you in on what we plan on covering, since he's been working on this and has been doing a lot of work with M-X footage recently.

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Vegas for the fun!

+ Ted

Hi Ted,
Any chance of including an "Update" class or session for M-X eg on the side for those who attended previous REDucation classes? Lim

Hello Lim and others that have taken the first REDucation classes - the answer is yes, we need to create a "continued education" class - likely an online private web cast for those that have taken REDucation for us to spend time going over what has changed with the latest M-X RED ONE cameras, and the software that supports the post workflows. After we run the Vegas class that will be covering this for the first time, we can structure that into something that works for you and the other students.

Michael Cioni, Mark Pederson from OffHollywood (who will be part of Vegas REDucation staff) and I are going to try an experiment in the next couple weeks where we do a webcast to talk in general about what will be covered in the Vegas REDucation, so if that works well, we can use that vehicle to get this M-X info to REDucation alumni.

Thanks

+ Ted

Thanks Ted. Good to know that Mark has come on board too. Lim

I'm really fired up to dig in with Ted & Michael and the other instructors and make this the best REDUCATION ... EVER. I won't be representing the East Coast alone ... Steve Sherrick is on the team as well. The team at OFFHOLLYWOOD is working with Mysterium-X in the field and in the post facility every single day - we have our 2nd and 3rd MX feature films rolling now - so I'm excited to share as much as possible. I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new REDUSERS!

About what percentage of Reducation would be applicable to the Scarlet (fixed?) From the photos it looks like there is a lot of hands-on stuff with the camera, would any of that be applicable to the Scarlet?

Will there be, or will there be a need for, classes specific to Scarlet later on, when there are more Scarlets out in the world?

MX REDucation

MX REDucation

Hi Everyone-
As Ted and Mark mentioned, REDucation Las Vegas will be an exciting, convenient, and timely opportunity to discuss all things RED from nearly every professional production and post production angle. Furthermore, the hands-on week-long event is also built with an equal eye towards addressing independent filmmaking issues as well as studio sanctioned projects. Thanks to this intentional design, REDucation has been successful in addressing, challenging, and revealing some of the most progressive end-to-end file based filmmaking techniques as well as delving into the areas of RED filmmaking that are often overlooked and misunderstood.

But I wanted to take a moment to discuss the validity of this program with people who have been working with RED since the beginning. It is common to have people in our classrooms who have never held a RED sit next to people who shoot RED professionally every day. Yet this class is absolutely designed to satisfy both ends of the spectrum. In fact, it is common for us to receive feedback from experienced RED One professionals as to how beneficial REDucation was in improving their images, communicating the benefits of RED to producers, and how to solve typical pitfalls that are often out of their control.

Most success stories come from production personnel who leave REDucation learning more about the camera, color science, and exposure, but more importantly learning how the processing, transcoding, media management and color correction can and should be handled. The same goes for post production people who traditionally have very little understanding as to how these images are acquired and how to best manage and monitor the double-edged sword of non-destructive on-set meta data.

The bottom line is that this class is, in fact, for everyone. With a revolution as extraordinary and altering as RED, the industry at large is looking to RED users for accurate and comprehensive information and a non-invasive implementation into the world markets. We talk about this from a producer's point of view, a financial point of view, a wider workflow point of view, as well as a philosophical point of view. Because each project represents its own set of challenges, REDucation is the ideal program to help diversify your understanding of the format from the inside out. As the timing of REDucation Las Vegas coincides with the release of the 2nd generation of RED cameras, this is an ideal time to prepare for fall 2010, which I predict will be the largest, rapid shift towards file-based acquisition ever.

A few of the things we have prepared for REDucation Las Vegas are:
•*Hands-on overview and full breakdown of new MX color science
•*Hands-on 4K playback/projection of all classroom demo material
• Hands-on software and hardware tool labs
•*Hands-on MX camera shooting
•*Hands-on 4K DI color correction
•*Industry leader guest speaker testimonials & Q&A
•*Latest RED software tools
•*Latest RED hardware tools

If RED Users are concerned that REDucation may not be challenging enough, consider the arena of the filmmaking process that you are not all that familiar with and rest assured, REDucation will help you fill that void with a wealth of information, evaluation, and experience.

Looking forward to raising the bar with you all...
michael

For me?

For me?

:jacked:

Hi there!
I have a question to make (an inquiry, if you will) to both you mr. Ted and Michael (as it appears you are the ones running the show and you both work for REDucation?). My question is quite simple.
I am relatively young (17 years ) and inexperienced filmmaker, but hard working nonetheless. My question is thus: Having never worked with a RED camera nor ever seen one in my entire life (except pics ofc!) would REDucation have me? What I mean is, would it be something for me or is it more appropriate for more experienced RED users? I know Michael posted just above that it is for 'everyone'. But I still felt the need to ask.
And I know that age has little to do with anything, but experience does. I intend to shot a short movie on RED later this year - and some hands on training from the greats seems like the best way to get going bare none! I just don't want to rush in and register and waste your valuable time if the program doesn't 'fit' my type.
Thanks for your time and patience with a beginner! :cheers2:

You may be young, but your interest in this subject puts you ahead of the curve. We have taught REDucation with a number of younger students (some teenagers from film school) who wish to get hands-on experience with the camera, workflow, and most importantly, the philosophy.
We have had young students sit next to experienced DPs who are both hearing things for the first time. Your generation is the future of filmmaking and there is a lot to be learned - both from REDucation and the other patrons and mentors you will meet along the way. Yes, this class is for everyone, especially for you.

i 2nd michael's opinion wholeheartedly. at the last REDucation in LA, one student stands out to me as a reference to your point erik. she came all the way from Bangkok, Thailand, and had never been near a RED or turned one on.

She was very enthusiastic about it all, and by the end of the week, she was shooting and grading shots and took a lot away from it.

Like Michael says, the hunger to learn is more important than the current base of knowledge you have. I could tell you from experience that if you went, you'd go in Day 01 not knowing anything (as you say) and come out a week later shocked at how much you learned. With your attitude, you could take that immense new base of knowledge and continue your REDucation on your own (and with all of us here on reduser) from there.

If your 'type' as you say is a young person with a great attitude and desire, then you are indeed a perfect fit for this program. Your smarts at 17 in getting involved in leaning this stuff (and shooting later this year) speaks to your character and ambition. Great to see on here.......good luck to you.

Looking forward to working with you all again. I was on staff for the first REDucation in July, but have had scheduling conflicts due to other production work and was not able to to partake again until now.

It's gonna be an amazing event.

By the way, it appears the REDucation.net website is down... just a heads up in case anyone wasn't already aware:

I just put down my money for Red Education, Vegas. I'm looking forward to this class. Thanks RED!

Huzzah!

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

Thanks for the quick reply (and great feedback!). I had a gut feeling this was something that I really wanted to do and, even more, that this was something that would be really great for me. You, kind sir, just sealed the deal. Now, if I only knew where I put those two and a half grand...

Thanks! Yes, I am very knowledge hungry and quite curious as an individual. Before I really put my head into making films I was an avid programmer and enjoyed making games (still do, though that has sort of fallen off the track). I think the lessons learned there has been useful, and that I'll quickly absorb any information I come across ^^.

I'm adamant about getting the best out of *ANYTHING* I do. This, being absolutely no exception. If traveling over the Atlantic and wrapping my head around loads of new stuff is the first step to pave my way into making great movies, then so be it. I am really excited about this.
To be frank, I expected a negative response to this - something along the lines of REDucation only being for pros (or semi-pros). Very relieved to hear that is not the case and that there have been others before me. Glad to hear that a mix is welcome! :)

(On that topic, since I guess it can't hurt to ask, is there any discount if you're young and/or a student? Not fishing for CHEAPucation here, just curious. Either way, I'll try to pay my way now that I know it's possible ^^).
Once again, thanks for all the words guys! Really glad I joined! :yesnod:

Just wanted to chime in, this upcoming REDucation is going to be amazing. With Michael, Mark, Ted, Myself, and a team of TAs there will be a library of information from a variety of shooting environments.

It really doesn't matter whether you know nothing or think you know everything, trust me, you will learn lots if you want to at REDucation.

In addition to learning a lot, this will be a great time to network with people who come from all over the world (literally) and that have had amazing experiences.

I'm super excited for the upcoming event and think that it's worth the time and effort and expense to attend.

Casey, I'm hoping your post means you'll be able to be there.
