  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Resolve says fail to initialize. Let me know if anything changes. Works just fine in redcine X beta. about 10-12 fps.

I also got a "kernel extension is not from an identified developer" error when installing the driver on a new mpbR. I did not get this error on any of my towers.
 
Please make sure you are all on the updated driver & firmware we release on 4/7, this one makes it work a lot faster over Thunderbolt and has some important stability improvements as well. That driver & firmware is also compatible with the latest Resolve.
 
I tested my new Rocket X in my new Sonnet Echo 3 with my wifes 6 month old mac mini [2.5ghz Intel Core i5 4gig RAM 10.9.2]. Not sure if she has TBolt 2 but I doubt it. So the footage was on her desk top and the RR-X was humming away. A 7 Gig clip took 7 minutes to transcode to H264 (she doesn't have FCP for better codecs). I feel that is slow. A few things about it. It said that it doesn't support video processing only decoding. I believe that means (I will call red today) that the RRX card currently does not help with any real time video grading or viewing. I also could not get my HD/SDI Monitor to be recognized through the BNC connector included with the RRX. All in all the test was a success in that I transcoded 6K footage. I was not impressed with the speed of the transcode and I was not impressed that the RRX did not help with realtime viewing/grading. I know that the Sonnet enclosure is limiting in that it uses 4 of 16 data lanes (which is lame since they designed the enclose to be used with the RRX. They have a picture of the RRX inside the enclosure on the side of the box). I also know that I am using TBolt 1 not 2. I have a job tomorrow that I will use the set up with a new lap top but Ill have to concede that a 128 gig card will take 2+ hrs to decode.
 
So after I had a day to figure things out, my Mac Mini is clearly the slow variable. That was no big surprise. Although it is similar specs to MB Pro laptops with SATA Drives. My guess is some where around three- four times as long to process 6K footage as say a laptop with TBolt 2 and a SSD Drive. That being said I don't own that computer so I won't be benefiting from its speed. My 3 year old 17" with TBolt laptop died which is why I ended up on my wifes Mini in the first place. So to come full circle and to answer questions within this forum, The Sonnet Echo 3 does work but it performs best with the best available computer, obviously. I was kind of hoping that the Computer was less of a variable, that the RRX would do most the processing. It was the Drive speed that bottlenecked the transcode the most. It was easy to set up and Cine X recognized the RRX just fine. As far as the HD/SDI output, that is not supported at this time as per RED. I will do two more test before settling in on a system. I want to do tests with both a MAC tower and the RRX card in it. And also a test with the Sonnet Echo 3 and a new MBPro with T bolt 2 and SSD Drives.

Hi Charlie,

The display out had not been enabled in the RRX yet, per RED. If your are using the most current firmware, you must be on Tb2-if the RRX icon in CineX is illuminated. If it isn't illuminated, no good...

Hi Eric,

Monitor out via RRX-no estimate on when this is going to be enabled, but it is being worked on, per Support today.

I would also like to know, if anyone has had success with your second question and, if so, what specific hardware was used.

To my knowledge, still no SDI out over Rocket-X. I am currently using the Blackmagic Mini-monitor on a new mac pro for SDI out. It is currently only outputting 720 but Red is aware and is working on it.

I always hesitate to bang on RED about things like getting the SDI outs on the RR-X rocking, because it implies that they aren't already doing all they can. That seems dickish. I actually believe that no one is more frustrated by how long this is taking than Rob himself and for that he and his team deserve my respect and support - not rubbing their noses in the obvious.

If Jarred and the Red Team really are allocating engineering resources by tabulating RedUser posts, then mark me down as someone who would realize huge benefits if the RR-X SDI outs were live.

In reality, I would assume that while RedUser feedback is one of the many considerations taken into account - that there are complex interdependent issues beyond our understanding that ultimately drive such decisions. Many of us would love a progress report, but if RED's policy is to stay silent until they have it working I can see the logic.

Is there a working TB2 recommendation yet for the new MacPro and the Red Rocket X? For use with Premiere, Resolve, and FCPX.

That's good to hear. I haven't tested RR-X in TB2 external chassis since March and there were multiple problems then, apparently caused by driver conflicts. It was bound to get sorted eventually so I have been patiently waiting for reports like this.

Could you share your system specs with the RU community? OS version used, other things on the TB2 bus, RAM, mobo, etc…

I was using a new mac pro 12 core with 64 gigs ram, 10.9.2 OS version. I've had different cards on the same bus and all worked fine (usb 3 cards, raid and host cards, and blackmagic cards). Just depends what I need for a particular job.

Blair, not sure if it helps you but I have been using the SDI out on a BMD Decklink 4K SDI which sits in the same chassis as the RRX. Works with Resolve and with RCX as well. I'm sure you are aware of the Video Out pref in RCX where you can choose the device. I'd love the RRX SDI outs enabled as well but this workaround has for the most part worked for me, although I have to put it in 8 bit mode in RCX to get a non-crushed signal.
 
Tested the Rocket-X in a TB2 Magma 3T Chassis over the weekend, MBPR 650M TB1, MBPR 750M TB2, 4GHz 4770K TB2 Hackintosh system, all transcoded 4k Red-one, 5k Epic, and 6k Dragon R3D materials at around 38-42 fps, didn't seem to matter what system I used, they all connected at x4 or x8 lane speeds but every connection was limited to 500MB/s bandwidth. Additionally only 1 of 3 LED lights would blink with activity while the Rocket-X was transcoding.

I also installed the Rocket-X directly into an x8/x16 lane PCI-e slot in the Hackintosh system, nearly the exact same transcode speeds as with the TB chassis, around 42-44 fps with 4k Red-One, 5k Epic, and 6k Dragon material.

The only major difference between all the systems was the overall system resources used while transcoding with the Rocket-X.
MBPR 650M = 90% resources used
MBPR 750M = 80% resources used
4GHz Quad-core Hackintosh = 60% resources used

i usually use a blackmagic mini monitor for 1080p monitoring, rather than the rocket card.

do you have some review about using the RR-X with Thunderbolt 2 and MBP or New Mac Pro ?
I think you are all using it at list since more than 6 month, I would be very grateful if you can post your thought about using those equipment.
