Does anybody know what is going on with Redrock's microRemote? There seems to be plenty of reviews, boasts, blah blah (since 2010 btw) on the web but nowhere to order the thing.

Thx

Yeah, still in the R&D phase still I believe.

I asked them at NAB this year...and they gave the same answer that they did for the past three years.... "it will be out this summer".... Rrrrriiight.........

I actually got an email from Redrock with a 'non transferrable' link to confirm intrest in remaining on their 'Early Notification List' on April 15th. In the body, it mentioned that I needed to repond by April 13th to remain on their list and that they are 'close to production'.

Terribly sorry old chaps, I seem to have misplaced my time machine. Also, I was interested when I signed up for early access/beta 4.5 years ago. I admit my interest has dimmed somewhat in the intervening years. I hooked up with another WFF a number of years ago, in fact. Sorry Redrock, it's not me, it's you.

Microremote allegedly ships June; one motor package with the non-iPhone remote and no range finder is allegedly under $2500... not sure how much the iPhone version adds in terms of cost. I love the idea of seeing DoF and actual range to subject overlaid - I hope it works as well in practice as it sounds like it would in theory.

They need to watch that price, at some point it becomes better to just get a used Bartech.

What i find most interesting is the little thumb-roll thing. I find normal FFs unergonomic on hand held rigs.
Anybody know of any similar products?

I'm definitely watching this closely, I like the handheld idea a lot

Hi Guys,

I know it's been a long time coming, but the big deal this year was that we were showing our own digital motors. Previously we were compatible with a wide range of motors, but they would all nearly double the price of the system. The prices you saw above ($1,400 for the thumbwheel version and $2,400 for wireless) is for a complete digital system which means that it includes our own digital motor.

So Shawn, I wouldn't see it as "coming close to the price of a used bartech" because the fact is the microRemote will be on par with a wide range of digital systems in all aspects. We don't want people to have to "settle" for a less expensive system, the microRemote will be able to play with the big boys just as much as any other system, but at a more end user price range.

Cheers,

Loren Simons

How about interfacing with Kessler's Fusion? That ability would interest me.

Heck, interface with the damn *EPIC* - there's no sign of Redmote Pro in the near future, need something else with a big knob to do the same job!

Here's a good demo thanks to Loren and Cinema5d.

Will the config with the current wireless focus wheel work with in a three motor FIZ setup? Can it handle two or three motors?

How does it handle free spinning focus lenses (ie Canon AF lenses)?

What are the power option on the receiver? And on the wireless focus wheel? Internal re-charging battery?

Will the follow focus rod-based wheel be available any time soon?

Glad to hear it!
have you done extensive testing with modern cinema lenses, like the Red Pro Primes?
If you want some rigorous beta testing (I own an Epic, full set of RPPs and more) and my AC loves to make products cry, I'd be glad to beta test for you, shoot me a PM or email at nelsonentertainment -at- yahoo -dot- com

Tony,

Our digital motor will cost $595.

Peter,

The microRemote is currently a single channel system, so if you wanted to do focus and zoom it would involve two basestations. The basestations are powered by any traditional dtap source, but cables can also be cut to spec as it has an internal regulator.

The wireless focus controls are powered by AA batteries, and also have external power input plugs for additional configurations.

Also, in regards to the free spinning Canon lenses, you can both automatically and manually calibrate your range. So you would simply manually set the end points of your lenses via the basestation.

Shawn,

We've had quite a bit of field testing, but thanks for the enthusiasm! Were all excited to get this in the hands of filmmakers. The basestation allows the user to adjust the torque that the motor puts out. So while I have not tried anything thicker then a brand new CP.2, I'm sure our digital torque motor's will be able to handle a wide range of lenses. We will be sure to have a much broader test before the unit is released, now that NAB is over. Luckily, I'm in the heart of LA and that shouldn't be too much of a problem ;)

Hey Loren,

What is the ETA on this... its been "This summer" for a few years now and I'm just curious if should wait to buy it or give something else a shot? Is this summer actually realistic this time around?

Louis,

ETA is officially June 1st for reservation holders. I think what's different now is that it's a complete Redrock system (digital motors included) which is where we really wanted to be.

My rule of thumb though is to never let a gear purchase hinder a production, however if you're not pressed to make a wireless follow focus purchase and have some time to hold off on your decision I definitely think the microRemote system will be worthwhile.

Cheers,

Loren Simons

June 1st is coming up real soon! Any word on ETA for non-reservation holders? Or how do you make a reservation?

Well, I thought they were shipping June 1st for reservation list people, but I'm on the reservation list and have not even heard anything about ordering. Pretty typical of Redrock... in fact, it's exactly what I expected. At least they're consistent with their delivery of BS.
