Redrock microMatteBox shipping news

Someone please help me understand something.

The Rods that come with the RED Production Pack are 19mm Rods, Correct?

So does that mean I need to purchase an adapter from RED to be able to mount the RedRock Mattebox? Do I also need 15mm Rods to complete the installation?

Is the redrock light weight 15mm or studio 15mm?

wow.... great thread... we got some REDNinjas here.... I would be interested in this Mattebox. ( as another solution would be much more costly.) I would want the 19mm rod option....

question: who wants it with 15mm? It seems like if it were being created for RED users as the main market, wouldn't it be build from day 1 with 19mm as the standard?

or is this build for cine style shooting with Z1U/HVX200 DVX etc.....?

Indeed, but it hasn't been built primarily for the Red system - it's been built to work on a fairly complete range of systems, including Broadcast/ENG, and of course the Redrock M2-based systems - all of which use the lightweight 15mm standard of rods - so that's where the 15mm choice comes from.

Also, you can convert a 15mm accessory to 19mm, but not the other way around (or at least not as easily and certainly not with all/most existing 19mm kit) - so that's also a sensible decision for all-round compatibility...

True, but on an email from RedRock on July 8 to all reservation holders - here is one of their headers:

"Full Support for Red Camera

Many of these features adds up to a great conclusion for Red Camera owners: the microMatteBox is a great accessory for your Red camera, whether you use nikon lenses, PL-mount cinema lenses, or the Red lenses - in fact lens sizes up to 156mm in diameter. The added swing-away and spring-loaded metal filter holders will be welcomed additions to your 4K cinema package based on the Red One."

I like the light weight concept of this mattebox, so consider this another vote for 19mm rods to avoid 19mm to 15mm converter, more rods and more weight.

Also, I mentioned concerns over plastic on a previous post - guess my main concern is the swing away arm. If it is plastic it is light, but often plastic ends up being bulky and not solid enough to support filters or in a windy environment. I hope this particular component is aluminum. If so, Redrock may hit a homerun on this unit.

yep - the arm is aluminum as are the filter trays. We heard folks loud and clear at NAB this year

When you receive a reservation notification, please let us know if you are a Red owner (or future owner :) ) and we'll keep track of the interest in 19mm

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian, just a suggestion that may require more trouble than it is worth but a "15mm or 19 mm" preference check box for your reservation page may make it easier to gauge 19mm version interest for those who are newly making reservations. As for those who already reserved, an email memo for people to respond with their preference for 19mm might be a good idea too since not everyone will catch this thread.

Thanks so much for listening.. if it turns out as good as I think it will, you will have an influx of red owners coming your way.

That's great - now I want to buy your mattebox solely for listening and working with your customers (oh, having a worthy mattebox is kind of important too I suppose).

Thanks Brian - this sounds really good!

Thanks Brian

I sincerely believe that the mattebox system which you will be offering will be of a much better quality than anything such as Cavision will have to offer, not to mention that the sales team at Redrock have always offered such great customer service.

For the price and quality of what Redrock is offering I don't see why anyone would want to go anywhere else for a Mattebox system.

Personally, we'll be keeping the "Red"rock with our REDS :-)

How many reservations have been put in? I have high hopes for this MB

Darwin, I asked the same question on the Redrock forum. Brian's answer was "More than 50. :)"

Hopefully they have enough to make it a profitable product for them.
