  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedRelay.net

I'm not sure what is wrong with Safari but IE7 and Firefox are now pretty well completed.

i have the same problems with the zip files. but why do you zip a compressed video file. that makes no sense man. the checksum in the zip file is not correct.

regards

zipping a compressed video file is a way of preventing hotlinking. this allows me to keep downloads to a minimum while still serving those who really want the file. Again, I'm not sure why the zipping isn't working for some of you, but as I stated at the top of the page, if you double click on a video file, you can download normally. Try that.

Also, in the future, if you guys have a problem, let me know what kind of system you are on- browser, etc. The site isn't broken per se because it's working for the hundreds who have already downloaded. It's probably a configuration specific issue. I can't troubleshoot without knowing the circumstances of the failure.

Yes and no.

There is a reason for the no. The reason is because we want to keep downloads as low as possible while still serving the people who really want the clip. The easier it is for people to download, the more likely we are to have partial downloads which is bad for bandwidth. It's bad because either someone decides they don't want it and never sees it- which is a waste- or that they do end up seeing it which means they downloaded it 1.x number of times rather than just once.

So, now for the yes. If you select a clip, you will notice the File Information box on the bottom left fills out. There is a "Where" part and it is a URL based link. The person must be logged in otherwise it will simply take them to the login screen.

Example:
http://www.redrelay.net/relay.html?path=/default/macgregor/clips3.mov

Now, this is more than likely only a temporary thing. I have the required login set up (even though the login information is filled out) because it deters bots and again keeps likely partial downloads to a minimum. I want to watch how much bandwidth is being used so I can make an educated decision about traffic and required bandwidth as the database of video files grows. If I deem that I have enough bandwidth to support the massive load of these great HD files then I'll make the access public and only require Red owners to login to upload their footage.

ChrisLyon,
Was redrelay's backend custom developed
or did you integrate a 3rd party application
into your site for file sharing\downloading?

thx for the site, definitely a nice way
for everyone to share visuals

It's a lot of prewritten Java, AJAX and some basic database elements. 99% of it isn't custom made (or custom paid)- just custom fitted.

Do you need to have a serialnumber to watch clips as well?
I ordered my camera a couple a months ago so I don´t have a serial and won´t get it for a long time.
You´re site sounds awsome. I´m on firefox by the way.

no, you can log in and download the clips no batter who you are.

RedRelay 2.0

http://www.redrelay.net/v2/

The current interface will become a place for red owners only. They will only be able to view their own work while in the Red Owner's Login. Right now, profiles and clip descriptions will be input by an admin because I'm too lazy to build a database for something that isn't that big yet. However, profile pictures can be changed on the fly because they will reference a file called profilepic.png stored in that person's upload folder.

As you can see the site will become owner-based. Footage will be stored by Owner and (hopefully) searchable by things like ISO, aspect ratio, size, and description content.

However, I'm having a bit of trouble with the searching and listing right now. I have the concept of how it should work, but finding the script to run it is another beast altogether. I will probably end up using something like wordpress has and make the site a blog in it's bare essentials. RSS feeds and all that might make it easier for people to keep up to date.

Mind you this new version is a while out. It may be a few weeks before I get a satisfactory version ready.

Dang, Chris. That looks really cool. You sure are putting a lot of work into the site.

Well right now, like I said in my first post is that we have 3500GB transfer per month which at an average file size means about 80,000 downloads a month total (average size 40mb).

Right now the site remains free because right now with 4 days of traffic, we are holding steady at only 5% used. This means that we are WAY under our max usage of an average 3%/day. Not to mention that we have a few (2 currently) sister sites hosted out that also have 3500GB transfer a month. So if things get nasty, we can switch to a ready-made mirror.

I don't believe anyone should have to pay to share media. We already do that for the "pro" material via iTunes and the like. I will pay for the website via ads. The website costs me a few dollars a month to host and already I've garnered 25% of that cost back this month via ads on the index page.

I mean yeah, it would be awesome to actually make money off the site, but it's not necessary right now. The content isn't in demand enough to make people pay to see or post it.

Oh yeah, and version 2 will allow hotlinking... sort of. We made that decision today. You will see what I mean by "sort of" later.

And concerning for RedRelay being another place to share footage... it should be THE place to share footage. I really hate it when websites try to compete for the same purpose when there are obvious winners in each category. I think that we will become a place to host and view footage and RedUser will continue to be the community. I have no ambitions of making RedRelay a community. That belongs here where it is already established. RedRelay would simply be facilitating a need for people to host footage. It's a symbiotic relationship. People here post footage to RedRelay. People use their websites to point to RedRelay for people to view their footage and then RedRelay links back to the RedUser conglomerate instead of having multiple places for people to comment. We originally had a plan for making comments available on RedRelay but we quickly decided against it seeing as how it's not our focus.

Footage belongs at RedRelay- the community belongs here.

Awesome. We will have to do that.

Thanks! I'll post the link to the video on the festival website when it's all said and done.
