  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedRelay.net

We now have 54 clips online with 3 pending including some DPX and R3D files. We are trying to work out who created the clips we have. There are several clips and DPX files that are found on other host sites that we are trying to match up with REDuser members.

Our iPhone compatible collection is growing as well.

Hopefully LART will release soon. We are hoping for rights to host that footage as well.

Did I mention I love REDuser?

Hi Chris,

The iPhone option is great, but when I try to access one of the clips on my iPhone, it just loads the file as text. I have been to several websites were embedded videos *can* load on the iPhone - so I know it's possible - but something is not working properly on the page. Perhaps it's a MIME association problem or something.

The clips do work fine on my desktop at home.

EDIT: I see that you have mentioned that the clips are meant for "downloading and syncing," but that seems like a bit of an unnecessary step; would it not be preferable for iPhone users to be able to visit the site and load up the clips remotely from wherever they are?

The problem is that the iPhone is not fit to show files of any quality over a cellular internet connection. I got the iPhone to read a file from the site but the compression was so great that it was useless. It looked worse than YouTube.

If you have any suggestions, let me know.

70 files, 3 pending and counting.

We will be adding the login and self-uploading/managing feature after the holidays! Imagine an early Facebook-like interaction.

Please, please, please, do not re-encode in .mov for Redrelay. Please prefer the platform neutral .mp4 container instead, because .mp4 is able to playback on the PS3 and XBoX360 and we can watch these clips on our HDTVs easily. With .mov we can't do that, we have to re-encode if want to enjoy it on an HDTV. If you are using Macs, both Final Cut and AE can export h.264 in .mp4 instead of the default .mov. Thanks for listening.

I don't re-encode except for iphone. It would make no sense for me to do that. What would I gain from re-encoding? Except flac from the original owner. All I do is download from the original source, turn around and upload to my server. It's the same file byte for byte except the iPhone down-conversion (which is necessary).

If the files come to me in MOV, in MOV they stay. Same goes for DPX, R3D and M4V files.

If you want to encode a file for PS3 or XBOX viewing, you must do that yourself. There is too much red tape (no pun intended) for me to go through with quality control of re-encodes with the original creator of the file.

Maybe you can request a filetype from the original poster of the footage.

Also, I'm not getting paid to do RedRelay, so the more time I tie up my computer with conversions, the more time I'm spending when I could be making money elsewhere. I'd rather keep RR free and simple rather than charge and have more options.

Unless everyone is interested in paying?

Sorry, I saw all these .mov files there and I thought there was a re-encoding going on. Too bad that the makers don't export in .mp4 which is more standard with devices like the PS3/XBox. Quality is the same you see, as mp4 still holds h.264/AAC in it.

Sticky please!

Wow, thanks Shawn and Hakkon!

Now let me upgrade you!

We now have 1,500 GB of storage and 15,000 GB of bandwidth/month. (Compared to the previous 300 GB of storage and 400 GB/month transfer)

We are flippin a new page, introducing you to some new things so....

BRING IT ON! MORE CLIPS MORE STILLS! 720p, 1080p, 2K, 4K! More, faster, more intense! Plus RR v3.0 coming soon!

And for those of you who are sick of the DirectTV Upgrade commercial, give me a shout out. RR has the most channels in HD, not DTV.

New look....

...and v3 is on the way. Users will be able to upload their own footage and manage their profile/files including file names and info after logging into the Red Owners section of the RR site.

Edit: We are also now supporting TIFFs. As of right now, we are only taking care of TIFFs added by people who already have footage on RedRelay and there are no plans to go back and add old TIFF files. Once version 3 is live, people will be able to add their old files if they wish. From this point forward, we will only concern ourselves with staying up to date rather than go back since we have most footage posted here on REDuser.

Steve Jobs put it well a few days ago:

There's something in the air.

Catch the RedRelay banner online now at REDuser!

From the Cold Storage thread:

There is no specific target audience for RedRelay. We just know based on feedback that most (if not almost every single one) of our users are people who have no problem installing (or already have installed) QuickTime. We can see platforms and 78% are mac users. That, being the majority use QuickTime and it's apparent that most of the other visitors have viewed the videos implying their understanding of QT.

If more people come to the site than we have turnarounds, then we know that something is wrong and we should shift our focus.

Like I said, we aren't against different or even multiple formats if the need is really there. For example, of the videos downloaded of Axel's, more than 90% were QuickTime downloads even with the initial options of WMV and divX.

It may have been premature to ask Axel to take the files off.

Hi Chris,

I first would like to thank you in every way you for your work regarding RED Relay, highly appreciated.

I don't want to repeat any discussion about if or if not poeple downloaded DVIX or WMV versions, those I just had on hand during upload, and therefor uploaded for everybodies convenience. I agree having ONE format that fits all is helpful, as it reduces disk space, links, encoding requirements to a minimum. For this reason I've removed them without any problems directly after your request. All I said, maybe a little harsh, is that I don't like Quicktimes gamma shift issues.

I would suggest to evaluate the idea of using Flash H.264 implementation rather than the Quicktime own one, as the Flash player is more widespread and usually does not show the gamma shifts we all encounter with Quicktime under certain conditions (even on Macs!).

I like Quicktime in general, really, but the fact that it produces sometimes almost unpredictable (nor explainable) gamma shifts actually disqualified FCP & Quicktime for professional production in certain parts of our pipelines. Not to speak of platform dependant codecs nor missing OS versions (but the same applies for WMV, DIVX, and so many others).

Like other we wish that Apple get to fix this, the sooner the better. You can't believe how many times we knocked our heads on tables and walls because of this. FCP has no issue when coming from tape and sending back to tape, but don't try to off-load for e.g. DPX pipelines or the like. Its simply not made for it.

Please have a look on the Flash version and check it out yourself. Its the same codec, so the same quality, but with less headaches as far as I can tell.

Cheers,
Axel

We will look into this, Axel, and determine what we can do to increase the usability of our site. As Red does, we want to take hints from our clients to make our service better!

@OH: Hit me, brotha...

Hi guys, I'm new here

I came across a RedRelay site and I wanted to ask you a question. Are all that video for viewing only or there are some CreativeCommon license so I can use them for my compositing demoreel? I need some material and RedRelay would be a great resource for me, but only if there aren't any copyright issues (that's why I'm asking). :)

Thanks in advance

Hey Macro, welcome to REDuser and RedRelay. Currently there is no rule on RedRelay that allows users to use footage for uses other than private use. The best thing to do would be to contact the individual owner of the shot you wish to use. There is contact information for each shooter on RedRelay to drop them a line and I'm sure they will get back with you concerning your use of their footage.

Thanks again and welcome!

Hi Chris

Yeah, I've though about begging individual members as the last option in case there wasn't any "CC license".
You know, as a junior compositor I don't have access to high quality footage to work with, but this RED footage gallery are pretty damn awesome (I guess it's not just about camera, but also about capable people who know what they do).

Thanks for your welcome and information, I'll contact footage owners individually.
