  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

This is being promoted for color grading suites, too. As a colorist I would like to truly show what I promote to the clients: WYSIWYG image. So, should I wait for the Pro version?

EDIT:

Actually, no, this is not just being promoted for home or grading suites.... Again, just want to get the right answers. Stuart? Jon?

So, if HDMI specs is what is constricting the ability to output a 12 bit 4:4:4 RGB, which will be ideal for D-Cinema, why was this output selected, as opposed to HD-SDI? I am a bit confused about what is driving this...

Um, you have to connect to the display using the industry standard connector. Even if we had used HD-SDI it wouldn't be any advantage as you'd have to convert ( at extra expense ) to HDMI to connect to the display / projector anyway ...

However in our CRIMSON projector, where we have an internal REDRAY player and full control over the signal path, the HDMI 1.4 specs for bit rate and frame rate and color gamut are not limitations, so we can use the full capabilities of the .RED file specifcation.

Will the home projector have a built in REDRAY player also?

Stuart,

Thanks for the explanation. So, if I have a device with HDMI 1.4 input, this will receive the 12 bit 4K signal? Just trying to understand how future-proof this iteration of RR is.

Thanks!

Is there a timeline on the projectors as well as estimates cost wise on them (Home and Theater)? I believe we heard $10,000 for the home version at one point in time.

As I understood it, the Crimson projector will be able to be connected to other DCI servers to play standard DCPs, correct?

Can we expect to get a Crimson projector for a 30ft screen for $70k or below? There are a lot of University and community cinemas planning to purchase a digital projector in 2013. Right now, we need to equip roughly 100 screens.

How does the Red codec at 20 Mbit/s handle film grain? As good as h264 at 40 Mbit/s? Better? Is it really satisfying for classic films with plenty of grain in 4K? Clean digital camera stuff in 4K is one thing, grainy 35mm or 70mm another.

Interesting. I can see advantages of tapping into that extra "meat" on large screens. Also, the concept of having the REDRAY inside the CRIMSON projector is really nice. I can see this being very useful for installation work. Not to mention quick setup and run time for new adopters to this 4K projection platform.

More questions, if there are any that can't be answered, can you tell me if they are part of future announcements, thanks

Will the redray projector (home version) be used for a small (8-10ft) theater, ie. will i still to use theatrical releases, or should I get a redray player and a 4k projector separately for that?
If yes, will a redray projector work the same as redray player for integrating ticket sales?
Will a method for regionally rated content (UK certification) be available for launch?
Can I charge what I like for a ticket, and pay the percentage, or will I have to give a minimum per screening or seat?

Thanks

The REDray Projector and the CRIMSON Projector both include a REDray player in them. Given that the REDray player can output to current cinema projectors, and the internal connections are better on both version of the projector than the options on the stand alone player, why would they hobble the player in their own brand projector. The difference in price and capability in CRIMSON and the entry level REDray projector will likely mostly be based around the added power, brightness etc required for a greater sized screen. The content provision is the same from what's been mentioned.
