  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedMote - Please Red

This officially blew my mind! I've been looking all over for something like that Berkey piece. You don't happen to have a link to where we could buy that, do you?

Hey Rory,

There are ways to use AB batteries and still attach the REDmote on the back.
This uses a simple, custom 19mm "U" mount off the back:

Depending on how you set it up, it can swing up so as not to block the screen:

Here is an off-the-shelf version with parts from ET and Berkey System. Cost is under 100 bucks probably:

I'm sure there are plenty of other ways too.

Thanks Jeff, I'm aware you can add more gear to the camera to have the battery swing away. Not the point with the whole Epic "modular" design and having such a setup would add weight and annoy the hell out of me.

I don't know it might be just me but I think the primary control of the camera like Epic should be rock solid. Period. Sure have a maximum guaranteed distance for wireless remote usage.

Reliability is the name of the game when it comes to "pro" gear.
And I dont like the TouchLCD nor the Side Handle and I want to power my cameras from a solid mounting point with minimal added weight or gear.

After all the Epic is all about size. And the RedMote is meant to be the replacement of the Jog wheel of the RedOne (aka "the hell wheel" which was a nightmare to use)

Are the issues with the RedMote fixable via firmware or is it a hardware issue either on the camera or on the actual RedMote? (Remote = non wired = wireless)

None of the redmotes I have used (3) have ever worked consistently even at close range sub 10 feet. Is this going to get better or is there just the wrong hardware in the camera and redmote to achieve reliable connections?

We haven't had our redmote too long, but so far it's worked well. I just tested the range and it seems to have no problem up to about 50ft. After that, it definitely wasn't reliable. But, I'm using it at 10ft or so right now with no issues, no random disconnects or anything.

It would be nice to have an official word from
Red, as I'd hate to be production and have no way of controlling the camera because I don't have the TouchLCD, Side Handle and the camera is powered by an AB Battery on the back of the camera vis Woodend Camera Quick Back.

What is the guarenteed operation distance?
Are the issues people are having firmware based or is it hardware based?
When is a fix coming?
Can we use and rely on just the RedMote to control & setup the camera?
Or do we have to have the TouchLCD or Side Handle to effectively and reliable control & setup the camera? (I hope not)

I got mine a couple of days ago and it works like a charm. I tested it at 80' through 2 doors and 3 walls and it worked. After everything I read here I had little hope to use it as primary control for the camera. I'm going into my next Epic production with it as primary control and will report back what actual production environment will do...

After speaking with someone who has a clue, it was mentioned to me that wireless reliability is very complicated to establish and may be very highly dependent on the city/location you are in. In other words depending on the exact regulations and broadcasting taking place over the airwaves where you are located you may or may not have consistent reception. If that is the case is it possible to change the redmote broadcast orientation through the menus? I wonder if there are people in the same area with working and non-functional redmotes.

Any thoughts on this anyone?

No, that's not relevant to REDmote. Florian's experience is what you should expect, so if you are not we can work through with you individually why not.

My experience with wireless on the REDMOTE has been very poor. Constantly dropped connections, constantly searching for the camera. And that goes for every REDMOTE I have ever used, at least 10 different ones. When docked, they work like a dream.

RED knows (or should know) about my issue. I have even sent my REDMOTE in for evaluation when I had another repair issue on my EPIC-M. The one I received since then for my EPIC-X behaves the same way...

Now, I'm going to admit here that I have not given it a fair shake or really tested it out since the last firmware update. I use it constantly, but rarely undock it since I've trained myself not to trust it. But I will be doing so starting wednesday and I will be shooting with my M all weekend. We'll see what happens.... I'll document any/all issues and will report them.

I live in midtown NYC ... and today I had my buddy trigger and control the camera settings from over 50' away and through three pre-war plaster and iron walls.

IMHO ... some Redmote problems might be caused by new users trying to endlessly scan for their Redmotes ... as I did. Once the camera has paired with the Redmote try choosing Default when prompted instead of rescan. You can check if your camera has paired with the Redmote in SETTINGS>SETUP>REDMOTE.

I've run to 150ft on several occasions (not saying that's the spec, but that's a result)

SAY What!!!!!

So my RED MOTES (all 3) (2 brand new ones!) should be better then 8 feet? ... because that's all I seem to get at best with all of them.

150 foot would be a dream come true.
100 foot a dream..
50 foot I can live with...
8 foot if the wind is favouring us and the moons aligned... 3 feet is about normal, its just not worth taking it off the camera.

Nearly every REDMOTE we have used around the world... at least 30 of them, only one went past 20 foot range.

What do I say to the RED TEC...

Or better yet Stuart, what did you do to get 150 feet. ?

Really looking forward to your response.

I wish Red make a cable that can snap in the rear dock of the Camera, and the onto the Redmote, so we can have a wired remote that would suffice about 95% of times (and keep the Redmote charged)?

This is our experience with all 4 of the ones we own/borrow - the range is just dismal and begins to lose connectivity at 10-15 feet line of sight. Range goes down considerably when there is anything obstructing line of sight. Generally useless for crane, heli and russian arm work. We have sent one of ours back to red three times for range issues with little improvement.

Please Red, what kind of range should we expect from the redmote? Should we file an RMA if we are not able to get 50' range out of these?

Stuart,

Thanks for suggesting individual tech support, but Jeff says his Redmote is still having issues after a repair. Could you please talk to the repair people and see what's happening? I'm no one to say anything about Red's operation, but there might be things that you don't know that repair techs know. I hope this will get sorted out.

+1 on this.

As it is, my redmote, consistently drops connection - even 2' away. This results in missed shots with the result that I no longer trust it and so leave it docked. I am working in a remote location where the nearest wifi / RF interference is at least 20 miles away...

I recently spent 20 minutes circling in a Cessna 206 with my Epic on a strut mount (6' away), while trying to turn the camera on with the Redmote.

I'll contact support, but it would be really useful to hear from RED what the minimum operating range should be (?)

This thread is making me very nervous. I did not buy a side handle for several reasons and planned on relying on Redmote exclusively. I bought a Wooden Camera quickback for mounting the battery which of course means I can't keep the Redmote docked.

I certainly hope both the range and the reliability of Redmote wireless connection has improved by the time my Epic-X ships.

I've just had a brand new REDMOTE turn up, tested it today for range on a 1 month on EPIC X.... no luck. Range was about 8 feet.. then poof... gone!

If Someone had got 150 feet out of there RED MOTE, they were drunk!

We all need answers... Good ones. RED are being reeaaaaaaaly quiet on this front.
