Hey everyone,

Since the REDVolts will only hold about 30 minutes of battery life, I'm looking at running a brick battery from my belt, tethered to the camera.

If I'm not going to be needing the side handle for a battery, should I disregard it and use a REDmote instead for controlling the camera?

Should I go with nothing, and just use the touchscreen functions?

Some thoughts and opinions would be appreciated very much!

I'll be using the touchscreen only for a while... so far from what I heard, people have a hard time doing without it once they've used it.

it's always good to have at least two ways to communicate with the camera, touch screen fails, you still have the Redmote or Side handle

redmote still has some ways to go with firmware. side handle is much more robust connection to the camera to do something simple like go through ur menus and change your settings. redmote can let u do that too, but what if you're having a connection issue, or newest firmware did something wonky to it, and you have to wait for the next for it to fix it? Touch screen is great but doesn't agree with some people, and if for whatever reason the touch screen doesn't work with the touch ne more, you at least have a hard connected unit to control your camera.

just my 2 cents.

I would not underestimate the value of the SideHandle/REDvolts.

I just wrapped on a 6 week feature...shot entirely with the SideHandle/12REDvolts/3TravelChargers. I loved it...and so did everyone else.

This is the kind of info that's gold. I'm hoping to work off 8 Redvolts and 2 chargers on shorts to begin with. I would hope this + using direct A/C to the brain should be enough for the time being.

Personally I would see the sidehandle and touch as necessity, and the redmote something that is useful (jib/crane/mounted shots).

I get your point, but I noticed some recent reports in another thread seem to say that the new redmote firmware fixes most/all of the issues people were having, and there was a mention of a bug in the side handle firmware, so it seems hard to say whether one would necessarily be more prone to issues. Aren't the touch screen, side handle, and redmote all essentially only as good as their latest firmware and capable of being hard connected to the camera?

Interesting, how come? Seems like the Redmote has the most functionality and quickest access to all functions, no? And you can put it wherever you want to so you can access it immediately.

Good info and thoughts from everyone!

What kind of battery life does the REDmote have? That's another good thing to know!

SIDE GRIPs ARE FRIKEN AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!
(but you do need a QUAD charger for the batteries, travel chargers are sloooooooooooooow.... to charge.)

Red mote not really needed... but nice to look at on the back of the camera :)

I use my EPIC with REDVOLTs and Vlocks on a belt clip or in a bum bag... Great way to work.
One good thing about REDVOLTS is once you know how to conserve power with them... (like turn the camera off when not shooting) you will only use on average 8 per day. Thats two V locks. With V locks you tend to leave the camera on until the battery goes flat..
But the best thing is... you can just put your camera down and walk away with RED VOLTS.. with out the need to unhook your self from the cameras power lead...

I'm just hoping the side grips come out of BACK ORDER too.. I'm waiting for 2 of them.. Amongst other things.

I love my EPICs.. just love em...

Red mote will drive you mad some days... the remote side of it is only 8 feet.. then dead.
some times it just freezes and wont come back to life for weeks, then one day you tiurn the camera on and Boom... its running again perfectly.? Happen to me again in China.. ? not sure what thats about. And they always seem to be flat? batteries die off in them, then takes for ever to charge off the camera so you connect to Lappy to charge it..

Other than that, they are a great little tool to get info quickly... and to change setting quickly from the rear. I do like mine a lot irrespective of the little quirks. RED tell me that someday they will turn on the full range of the RED MOTE which will reach to over 100feet! .. not sure whats stoping them now... some sort of firmware bug. ?

Over all, i love my REDMOTES.

Exactly how is the Redmote powered? Is it a built in battery charged from the connectors of the back of the camera? If so I might have to rethink the whole Redmote on the side and the VF v-mount on the back strategy I have been going for.
Standard AA or 9v would have been nice.

EDIT: The issues Mark is talking about I am sure will be fixed.
