  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Redmote battery charging problem

My Redmote has been sitting in its box for a good few weeks, still had a little charge left so I was able to use it last weekend. It does not seem to charge, connected it to a computer USB cable, and subsequently to a cell phone charger overnight, it still powers on but the little battey icon on the screen flashes red indicating an almost empty battery. I suspect either the charging circuit in the redmote has a problem, or more likely that the internal battery is no good (I think the redmote is about 3 years old). Has this happened to anyone else? Is it possible for me to replace the battery, or do I have to return it to Red? (didn't find much via a Google search). Thanks for any help.
 
Both. On the day I was using it, it was plugged into computer USB to charge. Last night I left it connected to a cellphone charger, redmote was turned off the whole time. Didn't charge either time

I am pretty sure ithe Redmote has to be turned on to charge.
 
Unfortunately, I have the exact same issue. Never used my REDmote, so it sat idle for the majority my ownership. Then a job appeared where it would have proved useful, so I took it out and commenced many attempts to resurrect it. I tried everything you mentioned, but failed to get it to accept a charge. I debated sending it back to HQ, but ultimately felt the expense could wait until I absolutely needed it. And then the HOTLINK and FoolControl entered the scene.
 
Thank you Tim. I couldn't find it in the manual that it needs to be on to charge, but I left it on overnight, plugged into a cell phone charger and it charged up. (I don't think I have any other rechargeable device that requires to be on to accept charging)
 
If it needs to be "on" to charge, how do you charge one that doesn't have enough battery to power up?

Connecting the REDMOTE to a charger will automatically power it up to charge...
Having said that - the REDMOTE battery is indeed prone to these issues, especially if left without use for extended period of time and also when overheating attached to a camera. I have been through three REDMOTEs and all had the same issues. What seems to "resurrect" a dead REDMOTE is attaching it to the back of a camera and leave the camera on for a while. Make sure the camera and the REDMOTE does not heat up too much during this time. Other then that - send it back to RED...

PS: I have also now switched to the HOTLINK + FOOLCONTROL combo. It has it own quirks, but I am sure they will get ironed out...
 
The other thing that kills the buttons is putting the Redmote in a bag or case where any of the buttons are pressed down for an extended period. The little membrane contacts inside can get permanently deformed and unresponsive.

It's why so many of the central "OK" buttons go faulty.

Thanks for the info, Peter. Appreciate it. As you mention, my REDMOTE was in its Pelican for quite some time. When I needed it, all attempts to charge (on cam/usb/etc), even when left for extended periods proved fruitless. I decided to seek an RMA, but ultimately did not execute it. Que sera sera...I guess. No big.
 
I wonder what kind of battery it holds. Can not be to complicated to disassemble and change, no?
 
Björn, since you guys tinker so much with the electric gadgets - did you ever check the redmote and battery?
