  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There are currently two types of REDLINK HD video receivers, SDI and HDMI:

However, at this time, they only receive the signal sent from the $13K Meizler module (which has now been completely redesigned).
Needless to say - $14K+ wireless monitoring option is not for everyone. Especially with many amazing solution in the $1~2K range.

It would be amazing to have just a REDLINK TRANSMITTER module - that would be only designed for sending the REDLINK signal and be in the range of $1~2K (which would still bring the solution to $2~3K for the transmitter / receiver combo). There are four possible designs IMHO that would make a sense...:

1. "end-module" - such a module would simply be just "clipped on" onto the end of the brain in a similar fashion as the REDMOTE. The power will be provided by the brain itself (via the rear connectors). The input would be taken from the HD-SDI (on the brain itself, or on another module such as the PROXY MODULE), with a pass-through HD-SDI connector. It could have a compact design similar to the HD-SDI REDLINK VIDEO RECEIVER...

2. "normal module" - would connect as any other DSMC module via a module adaptor, or another module - and will allow other modules to be mounted on its back (so passing the rear pins through, unlike the "end-module" proposed above). This will also be powered by the brain itself (via the rear connectors). The input would be taken from the HD-SDI (on the brain itself, or on another module such as the PROXY MODULE), with a pass-through HD-SDI connector. Design similar in shape and size to the REAR SSD MODULE...

3. "module adaptor" - basically a replacement for the normal or the +1 module adaptors. Ideally it would be amazing to have a +1 adaptor combined with REDLINK transmitter. This could take the signal from the HDMI and pass it through as the RED LCD/EVF connector (+1). This will leave the HD-SDI open for any other uses. Again powered by the brain itself via the rear pins. Design similar to the +1 MODULE ADAPTOR...

4. "backpack module" - a part of the back-pack system for accessories. However there are two possible downsides with this concept: The backpack is basically designed to hold "just" one accessory which would limit its use - and the backpack version would require to be powered by yet another cable from the 4-pin mini Lemo at the bottom of the brain. Design could again be compact and similar to the HD-SDI REDLINK VIDEO RECEIVER...

Both the HDMI and HD-SDI versions state that 4 receivers can accept signal from one source. This is IMHO more then enough. All we need now is an affordable transmitter...

Please discuss bellow and vote in the poll which of the above versions would best suit you...

We'll RED showed us their plans (somewhere between your option 2 and 3.) already in 2012, but it seems 3rd party products launched since then make a strong pressure on price/performance/form factor ...

Am I wrong or this was not mentioned in the NAB 2012 recon threads.
A wireless module for the rest of us not needing the Almighty Miezler Module.

Somehow I have missed that. This actually makes me that much more optimistic about this request.
With both of the receivers available now for purchase in the RED STORE, RED would be shooting themselves in a foot if they don't release a compact affordable transmitter.

Can any brave soul out there with the +1 module adaptor open it up and see how much space is left inside (and ideally take some pics)? You can email me the pic(s) directly to petermajtan (at) mac (dot) com if you wish to remain anonymous... ;o)

I just wanted to see if there was enough space to build-in a transmitter. Some of the HD transmitters floating about are rather tiny. This is not to say I want to shove one inside, just wanted to know if it is even feasible for RED to make a +1 with a built in wireless transmitter...

Cheers

Actually that amazon link shit is just an unauthorized clone of the Paralinx Arrow using an inferior chipset with no upgradability and less features.

You get what you pay for.

Authorized professional grade tools with certified Pro Chips from authorized vendors like Red or Paralinx will always make a better choice.

blah blah blah then why does our nyrius transmitter connect to our paralinx reciever if it's an unauthorized clone? The boards all all the same from the same manufacturer with minor changes. The only advantage the paralinx has the firmware for multiple receivers and a dynamic frequency chipset. I've seen the interior of the paralinx, nyrius and teradeck and they all feature the same Amimon chip. The above redlink is no different, I mean the IO ports are in exactly the same spots and the dimensions are the same.

I understand the more advanced chipset, but at least teradeck has the professionalism to rehouse it in a quality enclosure with regulated lemo power and built in SDI conversion to make it a serious piece of kit. All Paralinx and Red have down is ordered the OEM part right from the manufacturer and screenprinted logos on it. Red of course had to add unnessesary 45 degree angles and stupd scifi styling to it, but it's all the same off the shelf part.

If people want a professional bit of kit they should settle on a teradeck, if they want lower cost hdmi then get the nyrius. If you wanted the paralinx to be taken seriously then why can't I power it from 12-24 volts without a clearly rebranded consumer cable. Save the 800 dollars.

FYI for the do it at home type, trace the board of an aja hi5-3d for the regulated 5 volts, run a mini usb cable out of it and stick the nyrius out the otherside. Now you have sdi wireless transmission, with passthrough, and 3D support that will run from 5-20volts for less than a grand.

Tom, you are missing the point... I really don't care who rehouses what. More options is better for everyone...

Here are the key reasons I want to see a RED implementation:

1. Powered directly from the brain - no need for yet more cables and/or different batteries / charges solutions...

2. Integrated and controlled directly from the brain via UI or the iOS RED app (You really need to see how this app works and how it dramatically improves on-location workflow and data management)...

3. Having one brand solution I can depend on and one place to turn to (RED) when things don't work as they should...

4. If it is possible to integrate into the +1 module => extremely compact and solid solution for LW configurations...

5. What I call the "location (ab)use ready" build and design

And yes - I am willing to pay premium for this integration, as many others would...
This product is inevitable given the existence of the two receivers. RED would get much better ROI as they would sell far more of these receivers then if just the MEIZLER was the only transmitter. And - as linked above in the video from 2012 NAB - they already have some working prototypes...

Actually Tom, I'm the creator of Paralinx and I'm responsible for the module being created.

Are you an expert in IC 's? Because if you are then you wouldn't be making libelous claims that could cause you a lot of trouble.

What you are saying is inaccurate, irresponsible, and incorrect.

If it's so easy to get a clone made then please get back to me when you have created the Tom-Link HallHD
