  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDcolor3 and REDgamma3...

Yeah, I've seen it, it might be hard to notice but it effects the feeling of the scene. My two eyes, as probably many, see color slightly differently. It is all a matter of response to your eye signals (and how those signals are formed in the first place). As the mix of signals change your color balance changes. Might not matter too much for most, but is worth coming back and reviewing before finalising, which is what you should be done anyway. Apart from different foods/substances, effecting different colors differently, sleep and rest, fatigue and etc etc should also. Good night's sleep and good diet are a good balanced place to start on the first day and end on the last day before you decide to commit.

Fascinating.

Why did it take you 25 years to mature? :-)

Jim

As much as I appreciate the effort to continually improve red software and firmware for free (awesome) this does raise the question:
Why did it take 4.5 years for the red color science to mature?

Which brings to mind another question... Why WASN'T Rome built in a day?

Heh heh... we acknowledged that we had no idea what we were doing when we started. It makes sense that it would take us some time to get it figured out. And I'm betting we can still make it better!

RAW baby!

Jim

Life is a long road... and everything can improve every day.

Jim

Good point. My 2nd boy was born a month and a half ago and I still don't think I've matured completely....

4.5 years to mature? That's the beauty of RED. They can come out with stuff years from now that we can use with our cameras we have today and footage we shot yesterday. Other companies make you buy a new camera every 4.5 years.

We aren't done. I hope you would expect that everything we have done so far will be beaten.

LOL, that is a two edged sword question.

RED COULD have done what everyone else do: Just claim it's perfect and optimum, and thus NOT give us all these delicious improvements - which we are totally free to not use, if we don't like them... or.... Do what they do...

As an avid RedSpace hater from the old days, where I had to fix a lot of issues introduced by that - at the time touted as the optimum - setting, I must say I am happy that RED let me choose otherwise when I really, really, really wanted to do that.

But it is a bit unfamiliar and of course introduces the nneed for flexibility in post.

But if you don't like that, even CAM RGB is there for you to choose, still....

Wow, really? On here?

In general, not about you Paul.

Maturity gives answers. Sensors and cameras fly out the door with look and feel, in relevance to adequate (or not with some manufacturers) image look and feel, where here we are getting close to the perfection of good look and feel automatically. Much industry experience is established to define the characteristics of a sensor. The sensor in the Red One was developed before the camera was mass released. An adequate question, delivery maybe a bit less so. The vacuum action around here is enormous. I'll give Jim and Red thanks and praise because they did the job, and did it well, and in areas. But you ussually won't see me getting overly excited unless it is great. There is a lot more work that canbe done in the future, and even more now.

Of the competition, we do not need companies underselling us inadequare technology at huge prices, like they did 8 years ago, all though they had 4k camera (super hd speaking) technology back then. The time of 4k technology as cutting edge has long gone. 4k is cheap consumer level technology, if you don't believe me, spend $300 buying four cheap $75 pocket fullHD cameras, put them in a frame filming the projected rear image of an lens adaptor (if you can't remove the lens and make your own prism) modify the gain, apeture and shutter lines to lock them down to external manual controls, and you have a cheap super HD camera, double the price and you have 96mb/s h264 inter. Now, realise that they can make one camera to do this a lot cheaper, even with more bandwidth 10 bit 4:2:2, with uncomoressed Bayer or HDMI out. 4k shd should be the minimum maxinum video resolution of consumer, with 50p and 3d. minimum, all less than $2k+. 16bit+ (which would help with hdr post exposure adjustments), 8k 3d, is more of a technological and cost challenge demanding higher professional prices. Red is bringing that on too, and has passed 4k a while ago. Jim, God bless and thanks, you are making part of my market dreams come true that I fought hard for back in 2004 onwards, when we all started this crazy quest for cheaper professional quality cameras.
