  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X

Really? Do you know how many thousands of programs are out there that are built on Filemaker? Or Excel? The notion of a working program that is also a building block for developers has been around for quite some time, and quite successfully.

The post I replied to was talking about the concept of open source, and I continued on the same topic.

You are talking about very different issues.

Send to RedCine-X

Send to RedCine-X

All it would take is for the Red FCP plugin installer to include (alongside the L&T bits) an FCP plugin (something Mr Nattress knows a little about) that fires off a script that exports the XML, runs it through Crimson et al and onto RedCine-X. Ta-da. Send to RedCine-X from FCP. OK, maybe it wouldn't be in the file menu with all the other export functions but we could all deal with that.

Anything we can do from habit can be written into code.

Intercompatability between softwares only happen between same family of products and redcine is nit part of apple and it will never happen even in wildest dreams. So be practical!

actually dude Apple is cooperating with the good folks art Red, thats how come Color works with r3ds.

Can you use RedCine X without a RedRocket? If so when will that feature be available?

Yes... you can use REDCINE-X with or without RED Rocket. It is scheduled for release later this month.

Just in case you are confused with the currently released app RocketCine-X, this will only work w/ the Rocket. RedCine-X is not yet available.

not an alpha or beta, maybe a final version, just for once.

There is no such thing. Everything you buy in electronics is beta. Most companies only mask that by selling you a "next version" as another "final version".

REDCINE-X (and ROCKETcine-X for that matter) are free. What do you care if we keep releasing, improving and updating? Do you ever update your computer firmware?

If you really think we will release something, no matter how bulletproof, and then stop improving it....

Agree.

Most companies define "beta" as unreleased code, that has limited distribution to a select group of trusted users who are willing to help provide continued feedback through testing and reporting. One of the requirements for a beta tester to remain in a company's beta program is to provide useful feedback on some sort of regular basis. That is how most companies get a larger number of bugs identified and corrected in a shorter time than they might if they went into general distribution with early code. You have chosen to run your company on a different basis, but that doesn't mean that your definition of "beta" is generally accepted, nor does it mean that what you are doing is the same as the way most other companies would want to do it. It means that you have redefined the term to fit your own particular way of doing business.

REDCINE-X (and ROCKETcine-X for that matter) are free.

Except that Rocketcine-X requires a $5000 dongle..... :sifone:

i like the 5000 users are beta testers thing.

it gave me in 12 months several times a new camera, red rushes, red undead, redline, red alert, slow motion, ana mode etc. etc.

ah and now rocket-x redcine-x and
i-dont-know-what-jim-will-dream-of-tonight-and-make-it-reality-in-6-months-x

...hmmm... ever heard of Google?

One can come up with occasional exceptions to anything. What I said is absolutely true for the vast majority of software and, for the most part, hardware oriented technology companies. It wasn't a criticism of anyone. I was simply pointing out that most companies do consider the term "beta" to mean something pretty specific and use that for a specific reason.

ROCKETcineX feels more like alpha than beta. I'll generally play with something as early as I can get it but whether or not something is suitable for release to the general public is another story. You can preach till the cows come home that it's beta, early, subject to change, etc. The fact is people judge what you give them, no matter what label you stick on it (c'mon Jim you must have learned that the hard way by now). After playing with RocketCineX for 2 days I would have recommended you did an extended private beta (with me included of course ). Google just showed off a very early developer preview of 'Wave' and they are getting criticized for how rough around the edges it is. RED and Google are both darlings of their respective industries but people start to get less forgiving as you grow.

Whatever you do, keep my name in the bank as a beta tester but think twice before releasing to the community.

I would define RED's definition of BETA as "still work to be done and issues to be resolved." With this definition their products will always be in BETA.

Other companies just release, knowing their are issues with their "final" that the will try to plug up in future "final" releases.

I used to work in Silicon Valley in software development QA so I know all about the conventional terms.

RED haven't followed any convention about ANYTHING and I think that's the most refreshing thing in the world.

They could call their process FISHFACE for all I care, just keep doing it!

Jim

P.S. I'm loving being involved in the Red Rocket/Red Cine X ALHPA/BETA/FISHFACE process! What a blast!

heh heh...absolutely...yes!

Call it whatever you want... it WILL change.

Love it!!!

Point taken... but I'd keep one thing in mind. Better make sure you really want us to be more like the "big guys" when it comes to releasing product. That just might mean a lot of things that are worse than alpha/beta software. We could always add three features and sell it as a new model. :-)

We aren't likely to change (too much) how we do things. I like it this way. It really is fun throwing away the rule book. We will never be perfect, but we will always be interesting (at least in our own mind).

Jim

ProRes 4x4?

ProRes 4x4?

I don't know if it is to late, or if it is even possible, but it would be great to be able to be able to process 4k ProRes4x4 out of RedCine-X. :)
