  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X

EDIT - OK, just re-read the "no to EDL" comment - I'm HOPING that is no import of EDL for conform, but hoping it'll export...otherwise, what is the point of the bins and the editing timeline if it is stuck in a sandbox?
I'm not a post guy, so to me, having a full-function backend tool is overkill. If I'm on a commercial and want to do some quick preview stuff over lunch, this is perfect. I could even throw together a quick rough cut just for kicks.

Seems to me that CINE-X is not meant to play in parallel to Scratch or any other suite. It's more or less a highly advanced preview application.

Asking Jim & Co to make this an application to rival the [dozen!] other apps out there that already do these functions is like asking him to optimize R1 for wedding videos. It's a completely different game.

So if you did do a rough edit on set, and the client/director liked it and asked you to give them the EDL, what would you do?

Hey Brook,

I'm not trying to be the "gee, nothing is wrong" guy - I believe you are having this problem.

But - just as an example - I just loaded a few hundred R3D clips into REDCINE on my laptop, and then loaded them again... and again... using Load All.

It would be great if *I* had the problems and nobody else did, instead of the other way around! : )

For clarification, Jim/Graeme/Deanan et al, what is the intended market of this product, what are its goals?

Mike, I think you've been around these guys long enough to read a bit between the lines. Jim just said that they expect it to be a "platform" (his word, not mine) that will be useful to a lot of customers. Jarred has pointed out that they are building in hooks and a plug in architecture to allow third parties to extend the usefulness. What this means to me (and Jim and Jarred can correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption) is that one should think of Redcine X as a sort of Xcode Interface Builder (or, for PC users, perhaps Visual Basic) for Red material - that is, a standard visual interface with basic functionality that is useful to all, but able to be extended to provide additional functionality, opening up some opportunities for third parties - much as Final Cut's extensibility allows products like GlueTools and Graeme Nattress' plug ins to extend its functionality without Apple needing to provide these kind of tools that cater to a more narrow audience than the main product itself. It basically allows Red to define "the Red software look," along with the basic conversion parameters, hooks into things like the Rocket card, and some additional widgets (like the timeline) and let third parties do whatever they want within that. Think of things like Shake and Maya and you'll get the idea.

If you look at it as a "platform" rather than as a "program," and consider what Red did for third party development with the SDK, the intent becomes a lot clearer.

In "Library Room" - Are all of your shots loaded into the "timeline" on a single track or are they stacked on top of each other?

I had what is demo'ed in your "phoneideo" happen a short time ago and it turned out that all of the various shots were stacked...

Interesting - very cool, Brook.

Ok - try the following:

1) Exit REDCINE and re-enter. Does that clear it?
2) Save out an XML of the current timeline. Now create a New Project, so everything is wiped out. Exit Redcine. Re-enter Redcine. Load your XML that you saved. Now go to Load All... same thing?

Same thing. Stacked or in line on the timeline. It's been around for a few versions, persists on my laptops and desktops, even after clearing all REDCINE files on a system.

I've just dealt with it by loading more clips at once.

If I do a rough cut on set, it means that anything I create could be done by a trained monkey during the time it takes for the pizza to get cold. A reasonably intelligent human being could recreate my work in no time, and likely in better style.

After all, that's what they get paid the big bucks for, right? :) I don't think they'd appreciate me stealing their job!

(I'm not talking about doing complicated edit work here. In all seriousness - we're talking about throwing clips on a timeline, doing a five minute color and contrast pass, and playing it in realtime. That's it. You don't need an EDL for that. If you're going to go to all that trouble, do it in a REAL editor in the first place and save yourself work down the line.)

@mmost - I hear you, and I agree with you. With a plugin architecture, I'm not expecting the base REDCINE-X to be the final stop. I just think it's funny that Jim offers us a completely free application that does a lot more than REDCINE ever did, and all people do is ask for more features. Give him a break, guys. If we quit making feature requests for all this other stuff, we'd probably have Scarlet by now. :)

ive had this issue a billion times

Hand them my business card and offer my services as an editor at a discounted package rate? :biggrin5:

But seriously, assuming that RedCine-X allows for reconnecting the media, or assuming I am working with the client's backed up footage on their media already, I would just save the Redcine project file to the same directory as the footage and hand it to them along with a copy of RedCine, since it's free and I carry it on a USB key for just this purpose (along with all the other Red software for both Windows and OSX).

They can then render out in their preferred format in the comfort of their own post-production offices or hand it to their editors to do the same.

Cheers,

Paul

I don't have a problem with rough edits being performed on set, as long as it doesn't undermine the production company in front of a client. (there are many budgetary reasons not to do this) But because I've faced this problem before on-set, I was wondering how you deliver something useful for the client/agency/prod company out of the current redcine, outside of Tiff reference files. A small quicktime with a window burn seems like it would be the most ideal.

Without a real way to match back, it seems sort of unnecessary. On set, I've sat with Video Commissioners, Creative Directors, DP's, Directors, Producers and the artists themselves... and have used Redcine to show them the footage. Several things happened, that caused me to stop doing this.

1. I was asked for an export of an EDL.
2. I was asked for the look files.
3. I was asked why the footage look pixelated. Enter: Debayering playback explanation.
4. I was asked can they online using this program.
5. I was asked where the sound was.
6. And on and on and on....

That's just my experience. Once Red Rushes came out, I never really had to go back. And rushes doesn't lock or freeze my computers.

I'm confident that most of these issues will go away with the new RedCine... and I am getting more and more excited about using it, once it does accept an EDL/Cut list and can import and export look files.

Thanks.

I don't know if you have the right do that since every end user needs to agree to EULA when downloading from red.com

"So if you did do a rough edit on set, and the client/director liked it and asked you to give them the EDL, what would you do? "

It irks me that "editing decisions" are part of the software, so they are already there. But they're not valued. The customer's editing decisions (ie. "work," "labor," "creative choices") are being tossed out like garbage, and aren't usable down the pipe.

I wouldn't use such a piece of software. My time is too valuable. Others have hinted at the same opinion, so this is a valid point of view.

It irked me further that mentioning this -- the functionality of the beast -- was derided as "bitching" by a Red employee.

I would make sure to ask if I'm getting my Editorial Union days because I pay alot to ICG 600 to be a DIT.

Its the wild-west out there sometimes and alot of things are solved with more money;) A buddy of mine did a Feature as DMT, Asst Editor and is now cutting the actual movie with some big names in the picture. He wouldn't have had that oppurtunity if he wasn't so savvy on Red. BTW he is a killer editor too.

Who wants that workload? Are they gonna ask you to do the conform too?

Looking forward to testing RedCine-X.

goodluck,

1. This app looks great and will be a good companion to the RED ROCKET.
2. I can't believe how many people have complained and whined in this post. For those of you who expect RED to dish out free software that will do everything and require YOU to do nothing... blah. Wait until it's out. Buy a RED Rocket. Learn a program and troubleshoot. The workflow will be awesome.

What do cameras like genesis, d21, viper etc offer as far as something like redcine? And if they offer anything, does it have edl support etc?
