Hi Jarred,

I would love to be able to start getting familiar with REDCINE as soon as possible. Can RED release a trial version of the software to download that does not save (or puts a watermark on the image, etc.), so that RedUsers can get a head start becoming familiar with it?

I would also love to be able to start learning the software. However we would also need to be given some REDCODE RAW media to feed into it, and RED might not want to release that at this stage.

Agree Nick.
Maybe just one or two test graphic clips? (I mean CG).

And a trial beta version of the QT codec.

Will be perfect.

Yes, some sample clips or even just some still images would do.

But can REDCINE import other file formats besides REDCODE? If so, that would be fine - just so we can get used to the interface and workflow.

I seem to remember Jim saying early on that we would get a chance to play with it before it shipped. That would be great !

The risk seems to be that all it does is open the doors for haphazard criticism. While everybody requesting the beta in here would understand it's incomplete software and preproduction camera output they're dealing with, all it takes is one goon who doesn't know what he's doing to download the software/clips, twist a few knobs, break the image and declare that RED "sucks". Enough goons do that and news of RED's demise hits the intertubes at light speed. Then the guys at RED are upset over the absurd reaction, the mods here have to lock threads by trolls and you guys have to sift through the nonsense to find reasonable discussion about software/images that aren't even representative of the final product. It seems like a big headache for everybody.

But I still want it. :)

We are still developing and testing things. We will work with closely with the first customers throughout the workflow, including post.

After this we can take a look at allowing people access before their camera ships.

I know everyone is eager to get all the goodies. However, please give us time to give you the best we can!

I do it with apple under penalty of death disclosure...why not Red ?

Why not?

This is our first product. The "problem" with a beta program (and I've been in a couple) is that it requires quite a lot of work from the company making the product.

You also need good beta testers (who actually test and report *good* information back to yo). I don't have exact numbers, but from what I hear a lot of people who sign up for beta's don't actually test much or report back. They just want to get a sneak peak. So that lowers the value of such a test, especially if you don't have the resources to do such a thing.

lordnumberzero: yes, the first select customers Jim was talking about will obviously have access to the product. So that could be described as a "closed beta" I guess.

Poi Boy: how many employees does Apple have versus RED?

Thanks for the replies, Code Chef.

That's what I had in mind... not beta testing, but access before the camera ships... When it's ready, and the best it can be, that would be great.

thanks,

Thanks Rob,
I can wait. Btw, if needed (as a reservation holder) I can do extensive beta testing.

Rather then a beta test...how about a simple demo vidieo showing REDCINE in action, maybe showing some key features so we know what to expect

Darwin: good idea, it would probably be a good idea to throw together a little workflow video someday. No promises yet though ;)

Let me ask this community for a favor then. Anyone know of good screen recording software for Mac & Windows? It does need to work with full screen OpenGL apps
