  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedCine and IPP2

Ian,

I'm in Windows 10 pro update 1703. Maybe Graeme or another Mac User will be of more help than myself. But I can't imagine why you wouldn't have the "Log3G10" option.

Hello redusers,

many problems could be solved until now by just using all of your knowledge here - thanks for that :)

anyway, i have a different problem now.

i'm (windows 10, i7, geforce 1080) using the latest redcinex. my import settings are the ones previously explained by rand thompson and so far everything works out and looks nice. - until i want to make changes to highlight rolloff and contrast.. the changes only apply in the project thumbnails on the left, not in the center viewer. everything else works there.. ISO settings, 3D Luts and stuff.. only highlights and contrast changes dont apply there..
is this some kind of bug with my system, is IPP2 simply anyway showing the best result and knowing it better than me or are there maybe settings that i got wrong..???

Heinrich,

what do you have "Apply to" set at in the right hand console? Is it set to "clip in viewer" or something else.?

I just tried the selecting apply to something other than "clip in viewer" but changes made to highlight rolloff still applied in the clip viewer. It must be something else.

rand, again helpful :)
i randomly selected "Bin (selected clips)" and it is working now.. also when i de-select the clip.. hm.. interesting..

Sounds like Redcine-X is doing something "Funky" on your machine, but if it works.....

Rand, .. always learn from your posts.

also I hope someday I could contribute to the community as well as you do.
Thank you very much!!

Curtis

Heinrich,

Also, make sure you have these settings again

if you have these "IPP2 Monitoring" settings, all the things you said would work, iso ,3d lut...etc will work. But the output contrast and highlight rolloff won't work in the "clip viewer"

Curtis,

Thank you very much! Just by being a member you contribute to the community Curtis.

Rand, i had the settings as in the second image (rwg and l3g10) and yep, it didn't work then. just checked again - it still doesnt.
i changed yesterday to RWG and BT1886 (because i liked the blacks more on some clips) and it was working. its working also if selected "Clips in Viewer" wich i didnt check before posting yesterday so there seems to be no crazy going on :)
but why wont L3G10 work with rolloff and contrast??

Heinrich,

I don't fully understand it myself, but I will try to explain it the best that I can.

RedwidegamutRGB - is a colorspace ( kind of like a container for color info) that is capable of capturing all of the color info that the red cinema cameras are capable of. Some of that color info falls outside of conventional color spaces like rec709. IPP2 compresses/shrinks that color info down into the smaller container rec709 colorspace in a way that red feels is the most pleasing way possible.

Log3g10- is like a gamma curve( curve used to display the brightest and darkest parts of an image) but a log curve which is needed by RWG to capture all of the data that RWG can capture. Its still needed by RWG to help RWG be translated into the typical "S-curve" like gamma of Rec 709 or Rec 2020.

Using roll-off and contrast on a log curve that is not yet an "S-curve" is like trying to draw on smoke. You can try to write a poem on a tree's bark or you can wait until that tree is processed into paper.

Also,

The "IPP2 Monitoring" settings below were selected to give the best approximation of how IPP2(rwg/log3g10) will look with the typical delivery REC 709 color space and gamma curve. Since your footage was already automatically converted into the new IPP2 workflow with the settings below, choosing the BT1886 gamma curve but with the RWG color space, will give you a inaccurate approximation of what your graded footage will look like in the typical rec709 color space.

I would suggest changing the contrast of your image under the "Image: Output Transform" tab in the "Output Tone Mapping " area instead of in the "IPP2 Monitoring" in the " Preferences" tab.

My Red Trims arn't exporting with primary raw color space. I set the color space to log3g10 and RWG and when I open the red trim in any program it looks like the original file (DC4, Dragon 2)? Also if I try to export in Prores instead it creates 1 long clip instead of individual files like I need.

Trying to export the LOG files to upload to stock footage site.

Matt,

For ProRes.

Put clips either on "Timeline" or in "Bin"

Timeline

1) If you put them on the "Timeline" press "Ctrl + E" for export then choose "Timeline Separate Clips" next to the Export dropdown menu. Also, choose "Apple ProRes" for File Export, It's at the Very Top if you don't see it, then "Primary Raw Development".

Screenshot_130.png

2)This will give you this screen if you go to the "Export" Tab at the very top of Redcine-X. It will start with "1 of XX", in this case"1 of 3" until its finished at "3 of 3" at 100 percent completion. Don't forget to create an export folder for the "prores" clips you created before starting the process.

3) when you Import the Prores clips in Resolve or whatever NLE you are using, they should be in RWGRGB/Log3G10 like below and show that they are "Prores" file in the "Color" tab in the "clips" viewer.

Bin

1) If you put them in a "Bin" press "Ctrl + E" for export then choose "Bin(X)" with X = to the number of clips in the bin next to the Export dropdown menu. Also, choose "Apple ProRes" for File Export, It's at the Very Top if you don't see it, then "Primary Raw Development".

2)This will give you this screen if you go to the "Export" Tab at the very top of Redcine-X. It will show you the separate clips from the "Bin" being processed individually one at a time until each shows its 100 percent completed. Don't forget to create an export folder for the "prores" clips you created before starting the process.

3) Repeat from above from "Timeline"

As for "Red trim", I think the only thing you can do to it is adjust the duration of the .r3d file and really nothing else for "Export"
