  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED wins Emmy?

Deserved if that is the case

Looking foreward to see the pictures of Jim take stage with Arri and Sony reps to accept it.

But whatever has been thought behind this, it is a good position to "underdog" from, and the most deserved acknowledgment ever.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Interesting that four different companies won the same award, at the same time. Seems a bit, "We are ALL winners", but what do I know.

But in any event, congratulations to RED for winning. And to ARRI. And to Sony. And to Canon USA. Did I leave anybody out?

That's quite an honor and well deserved. With Red sensors about to get even bigger too :)

All the best to Jim and the entire RED team - but I cannot help but think that the title of the award is a slap in the face

"Improvements to Large Format CMOS Imagers for Use in High Definition Broadcast Video Cameras".

The sensors in the cameras that RED has brought to all of us leave terms like "high definition" and "broadcast video cameras" relegated to historical dustbins.
The pioneering work being accomplished - and the shift it has made to our art and industry - stand on their own.
I look forward to the day that the names of the awards catch up to the reality of the accomplishments.

Bravo RED Digital Cinema!

Glad to hear it, well deserved.

Def well deserved, I think it's a bit of a cop-out for the Emmy's to give it to 4 companies at once.

Regardless this is the stepping stone to the Technical Oscar that must be imminent and well deserved.

My thoughts exactly

well gee it sure feels great to own large format cameras from two of the four companies lol? though for the record my red kills my sony, but the sony is a good b cam that i don't mind breaking

I feel for the fifth company in the category. That would really stink.

What a load of shit.
What else red has to do?

End the world hunger?
Well, congrats to red nevertheless.
But it should have been only RED.

Let me clarify something about the Emmy Awards:

Emmy Award judging differs from the Academy Award judging in one definite point - the Oscars historically award only one "winner" in each category, whereas the Emmy Awards very frequently award more than one Emmy in a judged category. I've been fortunate to receive multiple Emmy Awards, and I'm an annually invited judge for the national Emmy Awards in the separate competitions of Sports, Daytime, and News & Documentary (Doc portion), so here's the explanation of how there can be multiple awards in a category. The Emmy entries in each category are judged by analyzing various factors, against a standard of excellence, not against each other. Then at the end of the process, the final judgement by each judge is based on the question "Is this entry Emmy-worthy, or not?", and a total score is entered. Each of the judge's grading sheets are then sent by those judges directly to a certified accounting firm, who tabulates the results, and sends those results directly back to NATAS. Thus in a given category there can be either no award, a single award given, or multiple awards given. In this particular case in the Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards, the judges must have felt that multiple entries had produced products that were Emmy-worthy - thus multiple Emmy Awards were awarded.

All award judging competitions, whether it be Oscars, Emmy, Golden Globe, Telly, film festivals, etc. are necessarily a combination of objective and subjective analysis by the judges. Personally I very much favor the Emmy judging process I described above to the Oscar and film festival process where they somehow feel the need to have one definite "winner" declared in each judged category. To me the Emmy judging criteria is a much more valid approach - "Is this entry outstanding and award worthy or not", which allows that there can be multiple awards given if the judges feel that is warranted. IMO there is just to much subjectivity involved with an award judging process to definitively declare a single "winner" - thus the Oscars are really more of a popularity and lobbying contest to get votes from the Academy voting members.

BTW - since I'm well known as an original Red supporter and Red cameras owner, let me say now that I have absolutely nothing to do with this Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards. I don't judge the Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards, and never have. That said, I'd like to add my hearty congratulations to Red on this well-deserved and long overdue Emmy Award for Red's hard work and significant advances in camera design and technology. Congratulations Red - I'm way proud of all of you Red Team members!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Technical Achievement awards are handled the same way that Steve Gibby explains the Emmy technical awards.
This is a good way of doing it because it allows all worthy entries to be recognized, and does not single out one as being better than another.
I personally have put in for 3 Academy technical awards, but, alas, not quite good enough for an award, even though the Academy allows for 3 tiers of accomplishment,
The Academy does a certificate, a plaque, and a statuette (Oscar) depending on the level of technology and impact on the motion picture industry.

The person who really got shafted was my friend, Deiter Seifert, who spent 12 years at Panavision. He designed and built all of the mechanical on the Panaflex cameras, but when it came time for the credit, he was left out, by Panavision,
