RED WEAPON - the name

Interesting that a lot of people who are voicing that they are ok with the name do so in a resigned tone. Sort of "The name is the name...but I suppose I`ll get over it...if I never speak it, or perhaps the font wont be too big, or perhaps no one will ask me too much about the camera so I wont have to say its name properly".

As a side note...I find it interesting that I shoot at a local range just up the road. In summer I hear the sound of gunfire from over the fields (love it)... Owned PLENTY firearms over the years. Currently own two Hummers. One a civie H1 and the other a military M998 hmmwv. I aint no lefty gun grabber you could say... And I still think having a piece of camera equipment called WEAPON sounds really really dumb. Oh well.

I have a hard time believing that some of these sensitive ears even spend time on actual film sets. Salty language everywhere, sexual innuendo, bombast, nicknames for EVERYTHING, toilet humor.... it's like working among pirates!

There seems to be this interpretation that sensitivity is a type of weakness.

While in reality it is the level of sensory development. Which to a creative Human allows the perception of subtleties.
Which is the basis for many other things.

Buttplug mentality does not compose symphonies.

Truly hard for me to believe that this discussion about RED's naming conventions has such life....

That is understandable considering your geographic location and working environment used as a reference.

In other parts of the world weapons are mostly associated with death, terror and human suffering so if this fact is taken into equation it is not too difficult to understand why some may consider this as a poor naming choice. Especially creative people working in a visual realm who posses some kind of sensibility to symbols. Comments here are founded and wanted or not, help Red to perceive what is not seen from own POV.

One may choose to laugh, ridicule, ignore and stick fingers in ears.
Up to a certain point.

I think the best way to explain the reason for the name is that it seems we are getting away from 2 camera lines. And becoming 1 camera again. The only difference would be carbon and metal option, yet specs would be the same. One camera to shoot them all, the weapon from RED.

Take a look here:

even RED lovers are busier making jokes about the name than talking about the possibilities of the new camera. Imagine people that don't like RED. This will totally distract away from the cameras capabilities...

i dont know know you guys, but I like producers and directors intrigued by my cameras capabilities, possibilities and doors that it can open rather than having my instrument that I invested a lot of money being ridiculirized, even if it just happens once.

Agree!

I think i have to plan some extra time at customs worldwide! Weapon is not a word you say near airports. And you have to describe the camera on your carnet papers.

And tape won't work!

Spin the baseball cap around.

Good advice. This kind of sums up the problem with the marketing and naming strategy.

The insides of the camera are fantastic, it's a shame that the marketing doesn't reflect that.
Being anti-establishment and rebellious is great, but this seems just like juvenile posturing.

Most of Red's customers are artists, yet it seems that they are marketing to jocks. I don't get it.
Nor I get why is labeling everything "professional" necessary.
Image should speak for itself.

Red's advertising and naming strategy affects the market, for those of us who are owner-operators, so putting a piece of tape over a badge doesn't really work if you are a professional in this business.
A lot of productions are already looking down at Red cameras because of this and other problems, no need to perpetuate it.

I've been with Red since the early days and I love the image Dragon is capable of producing.
I've been deeply vested in the platform for the past 7 years and I feel that I can say this without hopefully offending anyone.

While I admire Jarred's resolve, cameras are tools for creation not destruction. Each iteration of the Epic has been the ultimate tool for artists, visionaries, and creators. I'm having a very good time shooting with the Dragon and will likely stay on the ride with the new camera, I certainly will cringe whenever I need to refer to it in conversation probably resorting to saying: "the Latest Epic" or "the 8k 200FPS Epic" or something similar.

This! EPIC was epic, Weapon is plain dumb - probably a great step forward in technology and I´m happy about all the upgrade possibilities. But as somebody already said, we also just refer to RED as camera name and definitely continue to do so now.

Cheers,

Ulf

Tape works, I used it several times on the BOMBEVF as I got hassled for having it a few times. They find it and then they want to bomb tops all the gear... in all the 10 cases. When that made me miss a flight I started to use tape, and things been much easer ever after. And what you put in the carnet is quite loose. RED camera and serial number would do. The word weapon would not need to go in there, they are not into that much of details.

But I agree. The name is juvenile as fuck, the film crews I work with are already making jokes about it. But I guess the name get traction among the skate kids with tribal tattoos, cool haircutsand multiple nose rings, So I think RED probably did the math and understands thats where they make the big money.

Skate kids money is into scarlet I guess (and even I see much more blackmagics, gopro, and gh4s there). Weapon means a lot more money. Especially if there is only one weapon model.

hmm, these days I think the skate kids makes more money than most film guys :001_tongue:

Number 1 fan of the Dragno name. A bit concerned about the Weapon one. Also, this name loses a bit the "magic" associated with the Dragon, and I loved this association with Movie Magic. Weapon leaves little to the imagination.

i would pay for NOT having any 'Weapon' text on my next Epic ...

i don't like weapons. no weapon toys for the kids, so i don't want my camera with that name on it.
The bomb EVF was also a stupid name.
Could be a european culture difference...
Mind you, i did my military service i my time and learned how dangerous weapons are while handling them and can be tools to destroy things.
Anyhow i don't like the new name and will remove it from my camera if i don't have the choice to have one without it.

If Weapon has a tiered structure (entry level and flagship), perhaps "Weapon" will be like a class for the new body style and accessories, similar to how there are different classes of submarines or ships.

The camera tiers could then have specific names - "Nunchuks" for the flagship and "Throwing Star" for the entry level. That way, you'd tell people you have the RED Katana...or whatever...and never have to really mention "Weapon."

Even if that's not the case, the words "EPIC" and "SCARLET" were molded into the top of the body and in small letters on the front coin and barely visible in both instances. With a top plate on the camera, visibility goes down even further.

Weapon may follow suit. The Weapon Mini-mag SSD may still have the RED logo and the word "DRAGON" screened on the side like it is now. The customs and airport security concerns may be getting blown out of proportion.

I like RED Cinnamon.

That sounds like an upgrade for Samsung smart phones.:P

Giving names to products is a hard task. Red one, Epic, Scarlet and Dragon were perfect names.
I do believe that Weapon will be successful as his predecessors.
