RED WEAPON - the name

I can't imagine the tomorrow NSA listening! "Need weapons for tomorrow shooting, I repeat : need weapons!"

How about RED Arsenal instead? It sounds a wee bit less violent but still slightly militaristic and is a solid reference to the fact that it's an array of equipment used for specific purposes. Plus, the comic book hero Arsenal wears a red and black uniform...so there's that too...I guess....

I'll just say again, who cares what it's called, I care about the pictures. Seems kind of silly to get all bothered about really. It's just a name, it will take the same pretty pictures whatever you call it. And I bet when the specs do come out, they will overshadow the name.

Maybe it's so completely badass that "weapon" is the only appropriate name.

We're all just having a civilized discussion about the properties of a tool that for some of us may be the basis of our professional lives for the next two years. There are concerns about airport security in challenging environments and perceived childishness about the name. Is it still beyond you?

Well if you are ONLY protesting on grounds of perceived security issues, that's completely different.

But I remember someone posting like 4 or 5 years ago that they were going through security with an Epic and the security personnel held up the line just so they could get a look and actually hold one of the RED cameras they had heard so much about.

Nope... suggests European Soccer violence.

I'm not a huge fan of the name either but remember one thing people: Like every Red cameras, the name that appears on the SSD module (or Cf for the Red one) is the "SENSOR NAME", We will still have "RED DRAGON" written on the side, the only place "Weapon" will appear is on the little red spot in front of the camera, with these following words "RED Digital Cinema".
Again, i'm not a huge fan of the name, too neutral to my taste and no real bias, but come on, a new cinema camera is coming, we should talk about Dynamic range, color science, texture and iso sensitivity..

Ps: I respect and truly understand every opinion here, nothing fancy has been said, security or conviction concerns are legitimate

Personally I don't feel comfortable making a proclamation such as that since I have the privilege of living a life free of "weapons" beyond what I've taken to quarries to shoot targets but I imagine someone who growing up in eastern Ukraine today, or in an impoverished neighborhood or in an unstable country will have a very different relationship with violence. I would take the opinion of someone whose life has been impacted in a very real and tangible way by violence far more seriously than many of us who have thankfully never had anything except for an abstract and largely fictional relationship with violence.

I lived for 15 years during my childhood and early teenage years in Brazil. A very violent place. Had guns pointed at my head twice during robberies...

Whatever name the camera gets... mine will always be called

GOLDEN RAINBOW
HAPPY TIME

Seriously, with all the violence and inhumane things going on in the world at present, why anyone would waste energy protesting a camera name when they could be protesting serious problems... it's beyond me.

I usually agree with what you post but...

does it have to be either/or? No one is saying this is a mass tragedy or, I think, blowing the importance out of proportion. We can dislike the name while still recognizing there are greater problems in the world.

Maybe I lost my teenage bad ass insecurity feeling on the way but weapon or any pokemon name would give me the same feeling as a camera name.

Duly noted.

People forget that the SSD cards are probably MLC instead of SLC.
MLC is much more secure and can be read and written much more than SLC. The SLC is the type that's commonly used in computers today, but MLC is for secure handling of data and is super expensive to manufacture. The speeds are sometimes slower. I do not want a SLC or lesser secure way of capturing my footage. If mini-mags cost so much because they are MLC then so be it, it's far better than the alternatives.

Huh? You got it backwards. Single level cell can have much more writes than MLC. That's why enterprise SSDs use SLC.

On the one hand:

Of course, anything can happen. Having said that, with the exception of a few isolated incidents (if that) I think the most realistic negative backlash people will face with Weapon is, "Hate the name, love the image." I think many of the worst case scenarios people have presented thus far fall in "anything can happen" territory.

I'm curious what the next few runners up names were. I would've gone a different way on the name but I remember how stupid a name people thought iPad was and now you don't even notice it. Honestly, how many weapons have the actual word "weapon" written on them?

On the other hand:

RED doesn't make cameras in a vacuum. They're of a rare breed that fosters a fierce loyalty in the company and its products. Owners want RED to be taken seriously and they want to be taken seriously in turn. Names that sound, at first blush, like they were intended to appeal to teenagers that call everybody "bro" seems dubious.

There is such a thing as being your own worst enemy. RED can totally be disruptive in a more sophisticated way and still keep their aggressive edge.

I still like Freya's suggestion of the RED Wraith. They could keep the skull and W logo. Plus, it's got alliteration going for it.

If the name stays Weapon, it will eventually seem commonplace.

Besides, all that needs to happen for some of you to change your minds is have someone you think is cute say, "You have a camera called Weapon? Cool." And don't try to pretend that's not a powerful motivator, even for adults.

EDIT: Jarred has spoken, but I'll leave this comment for the three people that might read it.

Brain hickup, hahahaha, yes your right... just change MLC to SLC in my post and you get the point :tongue_smilie:

Well, David has re-opened this thread after Jarred has confirmed that the name won't change. Not sure what the point is but... whatever.
