Hey Guys Here is a link to the Short of the RED Weapon. I will be releasing the review this week or early next. Trying to carve out space to record VO with my colorist and good friend, Dan Moran.

https://vimeo.com/131579110

Just so you are informed, I used a Canon 17-120 PL CineZoom, Arri MB25, TruPola for EXT, 4x White card and a smoke machine from Halloween that i found in my garage. Hand held, Cut it in Adobe PP2015 and Dan Moran (UK London) handled all color in Davinci Resolve.

I do have the 6K ProRes 4444 File and will be offering that to all once I find a viable solution to actually get it to you. ...It's 30GB...

Ill try to respond to any questions at night since I will be on location for the remainder of the week. Thanks & Talk soon

Love the footage. Looks great.

I noticed there's a huge amount of noise at 1:57. What settings did you use? Any noise reduction applied?

Thanks!

Thanks!!!

Setting are as follows:

6k Full Frame - 6144x3160
REDCODE: 5:1
Skin OLPF

Project Frame Rate 23:976
Record Frame Rate - 23:976 & 83 for SloMo (Actually 82.and some change)

No Noise reduction at all. I noticed the rise in noise once the grade was finished but rather then correct, I'd rather you see the RAW- "Out of the Can" footage first. I found that there was much less noise in the RAW.

It's an amzing tool that out the can, in my opinion, looked better then any other digital format I've ever used. Very Happy with the Weapon.

Ill be posting a full review with my colorist Dan Moran either Late this week or early next week. Thanks again Bobby

Bobby,

Assuming you are familiar with the current Epic 6K Dragon ? Apart from all the improved workflow and ergonomics of the Weapon did you find any changed image performance with the new camera?

Thanks for sharing your video! It's refreshing to see ACTUAL FOOTAGE for a change vs all the tech related posts about Weapon.

I know it's the the same Dragon sensor, but I'm hoping the Weapon has some sort of secret sauce color science or image processing that hasn't been made aware to us yet... DC3/RG5 would be exciting news.

It would be great if you are able to post a couple of .r3d stills so we can all see what the negative looks like in RedLog or RG4 color profile.

The color grading looks great, seeing the raw for us to pixel peep would be cool.

Perhaps bittorrent for footage?

Looks so amazingly beautiful. Can't wait to get my hands on this camera.

I apologize in advance for the newb questions as I've only rented the Scarlet and Epic a handful of times for projects. Also, I've been shooting a lot with the Sony a7s with the atomos shogun (I understand its a completely different camera, not comparable to the Weapon) but I've become quite accustomed to the clean virtually noise/grain free look in less than optimal lighting conditions, and I'm not expecting the Weapon to come even close as it. As I mentioned in my previous comment in regards the the grain/noise at around 1:57, was that part of the grading or, if you wanted, can you get rid of most of that noise?

I appreciate any helpful feedback! =)

And once again, beautiful work! Thanks for sharing.

Bo you have to remember, the A7s does DENOISING IN-CAMERA. You may not notice it, but the camera is denoising as you're shooting. So there may actually BE NOISE, you just don't see it...because it's been removed. The only issue with this is denoising attacks your RGB channels, so skintones and colors may not be as rich as a camera that doesn't DENOISE. This is often why the F55 considered more "digital" looking while the Alexa and Dragon and F65 have been considered more "filmic" - what they have in common is none denoise in camera.

Bear in mind also, Bobby was shooting with the SKINTONE OLPF, which has a lower ISO threashhold than say the LOWLIGHT OLPF, so can be noiser when underexposed. LOWLIGHT OLPF with those shots would likely have been much cleaner.

Just an FYI.

Notice also that Bobby made it clear...no denoising had been applied...so I have to imagine the noise could be managed in post.

The shot of the light coming through the blinds while he's playing with the drums is really nice. I like the grade on that shot too.

Gotta say I think you overhyped this one though, lol. It does look good, but calling it a "short film," creating a nice poster and telling us to be on the lookout in advance made me think there would be some cool story. It seems like a home video or camera test, which is fine, but kinda unexpected after the build-up.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with the cam. Thanks for sharing and giving the details!

Pretty sure this is Dragon, not Weapon.... If it is Weapon, noise is disappointing considering we were supposed to get half a stop cleaner on the low end. Pretty sure RED wouldn't let this be the first Weapon footage posted in public...

The color grade is phenomenal...
Would be nice to see a few ungraded images too please!

It's not the first footage seen by the public. Chris Probst used 2 Weapons for Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood."

That is actually my fault to be honest. That shot was exposed darker than similar angles earlier on in the film and I was being stubborn and may have pushed it too hard in the grade to try and make it match the others as best as possible. I also did not apply any noise reduction but I probably should have!

I probably should have kept it darker and gone for more of a silhouette feel.

I really enjoyed grading the weapon footage in general as I had tons of latitude to play with, just a tiny bit of human error on the noise front!

Hi Bobby.. I'm rarely a skeptic so please excuse me.. but can you please clarify for the benefit of all in this thread how you came to possess a Dragon Weapon prototype to shoot this? Assume it's a prototype as there's many seasoned DP's etc. still in the upgrade queue and several trusted RED prototype testers who seem yet to share their own experiences.

I don't particularly want to draw your Junior user with only 19 posts profile into question.. a 30GB file is hard to share, for sure. Send us a couple of behind the scenes snaps of the Weapon camera on set. JPG's are small and easily shared. I'm sure you took these - being one of the incredibly limited few who got a chance to use this camera on a production.

Thanks for sharing Bobby. Looking forward to the JPG's!

PS: I often regret being a little outspoken, so I'll admit I'm wholly confused - Weapon contains the exact same sensor as our existing Dragon cameras. So I don't see how providing footage - Dragon or Weapon - is really representative of either camera as a measure of performance.

My understanding is the Weapon upgrade is around ergonomics - weight, form factor - some benefits from ProRes, integrated Wifi etc. Hence my curiosity in seeing BTS footage as being wholly more important than demonstrating end footage. The thread indicates a 'review' which I expect is geared towards using the camera on set and addressing some of these benefits, yet nothing in this thread even alludes to those aspects.

Please flame me if I'm wrong and shallow minded. Thanks!

Thanks Guys,
Out of respect of a good friend, I've been asked to disable the link for now and will be re-posting at a later date along with full jpeg's, dpx and or anything else you would like to see.

I must say the the extra DR makes a huge difference. Thanks and Talk soon
