I'm absolutely flabbergasted and honestly alarmed that even a single person didn't vote "I could care less what the name is" (even though it's supposed to be "couldn't"). I think maybe some of you need some crackers and juice.

What does that mean? "...even a single person didn't vote" Eighty-one voted that way.

The graphic for this poll looks like a, er, weapon. ;)

I think for those who want to use the word "camera" after the brand when speaking to those who may not be as familiar with the camera brands, it'll be odd to have weapon as the brand. Consider this --

RED Dragon Camera
RED Epic Camera
RED Weapon Camera

The last one to me rings odd as both weapon and camera are generic and extremely well-known top-of-consciousness nouns. And it just doesn't roll off the tongue for me. ARRI would have the same problem too if they went this route.

ARRI Alexa Camera
ARRI Amira Camera
ARRI Weapon Camera

Anyways, I'm happy about STEALTH. But won't buy in until I see all the accessory names at NAB and how the branding generally progresses. I hope the rest of the naming isn't as controversial or sensational. I'd much rather let the freakin' camera do the talking.

I was on a shoot (yes, that s word) recently with my RED DRAGON and everyone couldn't stop raving about the image and dynamic range. Not one mentioned the name. Seriously. The name almost never matters for its positives. But it certainly shouldn't have any negatives. And over 300 people think it does. I don't know if this sample is statistically significant. Maybe it totally isn't and RED will not get a single order for STEALTH. Time will tell.

As Mr. Jannard famously said... "everything is subject to change. count on it." ;)

So, if I am to understand the conversation, the origin of the name has now been revealed... the Vs in Vista Vision combine to form what looks like a w - VV So, quite naturally, the name they settled on was VVeapon.

Huh?

If the origin of the name is, indeed, Vista Vision, then Weapon seems that much more inappropriate. To me, Vista Vision implies a thoughtful peaceful view on to the horizon, a "vision-ary" view of the world. Soft, romantic, wistful. Someone tell me how Weapon best represents VistaVision except for the coincidence of the lettering, which in itself took a bit of a torturous route to get to a W.

Oh, well. There is stealth.

Not all vistas are peaceful... certainly not all Hollywood vistas.

When I think of Vista Vision I think of big films. I suppose some of them include lovers rolling in daisies on a mountainside among the butterflies, but not all.

Vertigo was a big film associated with VV. Is Vertigo peaceful? The film's antagonist is a man with a weapon, is it not? :biggrinjester:

I could go on.

Sorry - but you just aren't going to convince me that the natural language progression from Vista + Vision is Weapon. LOL

I wouldn't waste my breath... Just offering a counterpoint and context. (You are taking the words out of context a bit.) It may not be evident in my frequently flippant tone but I can respect your point of view. I just don't share it. :-)

A weapon can be emblematic of violent struggle. If you were to boycott all violent struggle in films, as some suggest doing with the camera name, how many of your favorite films would be lost to you? How many would be left?

Conflict and struggle, indeed violent struggle are essential parts of drama and therefore films.

Like it or not it has long been a part of film and photography nomenclature.

Come to think of it: a big W might be a decent alternative to having WEAPON emblazoned on the camera?????

Lol your taking that facebook comment way out of context.... There are non-Vista versions of Weapon so obviously that doesn't make much sense. The 2 Vs in the Weapon Skull logo is the one that has the VV origins.. I challenged Phil to that a month ago.

On another note... why do the Soft, Romantic, Wistful peace love and rainbow preachers seem to always be the most angry?

Bah. I guessed part of it, but not the whole tamale. But the whole tamale is exactly what I've always wanted.

Ha - not angry at all. Delighted that the stealth version is going to be available. I can't lie, I have never been a fan of RED's marketing but am a huge fan of the products. You win some, you lose some. LOL

On another note, I did manage to squeeze a tiny bit more information out of you! ("... non-Vista versions...")

Check this article out. Particularly the quote.

“I saw that the camera could be a weapon against poverty, against racism, against all sorts of social wrongs. I knew at that point I had to have a camera.” – Gordon Parks

I think that there have been many, particularly documentary or photojournalists that have certainly considered their camera a "weapon" against many social injustices over the years. What about all those people during wars, various movements, "armed" only with there camera as a "weapon" against some of the awful things people have done to other people.

In that case they did use their camera as a weapon against some of the worst things people can imagine, to tell a story or bring a ultimate story of peace.

Everything is context, of course, but I wish more people had that attitude these days. I'm a pacifist, but I have known at times that peace sometimes has to be something we fight for.

As artists we do that with our tools, sometimes, in some cases, the camera and the images can be a very noble "weapon".

Its important also, not to be too identified either way.

heh heh good :)

And yeah.. some people don't like the way we do things. And that's ok. It is just who we are... and we have been that way since the beginning.
