Great so lets make improve matters by writing weapon on the side of a camera in big letters.

Listen I too think the name is stupid - not because I don't like weapons (I have restricted permit), but because I think the nomenclature is somewhat infantile.

Every time I've had trouble crossing a border with camera gear, it's because I have cases full of gear and paperwork. The most trouble I get is on returning to Canada and they want to make sure that I don't owe tax. One time I was held up for hours in the Calgary airport because they wanted to 'Open' a lens and look inside. Apparently a lens looks really dense on x-ray. The trouble in China was over a lens adapter - carbon fibre tube with a pice of vibrating stuff that made no sense - and looking back I think they were right. I lost a day, and the director had a meltdown & temper tantrum... but that's a story over a beer.

So any trouble is always just because we stand out with 10 Pelican cases and someone is bored - I really don't believe for a second, that WPN written on the side of the camera / carnet / paperwork is going to cause any extra trouble. Especially since it becomes pretty clear pretty quickly that it's a camera and not a **death ray.

**although in - never mind.

I suspect Arri's market dominance is, at least in some part, due to the difference in RED's and Arri's marketing choices,

That and ARRI was already part of every 'Film' set outside the U.S. since the '50's - D.P.'s and producers chose the name that they already trusted, and the gear that looked & worked similar to what they'd been using their whole career.

"I could press your face in some dough and make gorilla cookies."

I've made a gorilla cookie or two with my old Pentax. Not so many in the last decade or so thankfully. ;-)

Since I voted, I might as well add a name:

"ReddFoxx"

... so when someone asks, I can happily say "what you lookin' at, Dummy"

... on the other hand, that wouldn't fly so well at security checkpoints either...

WPN written on the side of the camera ....

As a compromise WPN on the side of the camera would be a help. At least it would address a portion of the concerns. But as I said before with the new photo showing the GIANT weapon branding the part is already being in machined - I guess REDs hands are probably tied.

Depends on how far the production line has gone.

Scarlet 3K was a working camera. :)

I'm just going to wrap the camera's with "technical cage" and name issue solved.
I btw really appreciate the early notice on the Weapon, since i've been debating getting a cage for my dragons. Really shows red is trying to give a heads up to help us, even if it hurts current accessory sales ... shows where their heart is.

You think those countries are difficult? Try going to Israel with a camera called weapon and see how long your interview at the border lasts.

No matter what it's named, we can all be grateful that the days of piezoelectric vibrating 35mm 'adapters' is long gone. :D

Fuckin A

They added an interesting texture but man weren't most of them the dodgiest pieces of shit?

When I first heard the name I HATED it.

Spent a couple hours with Jarred today at RSH.

The name is PERFECT.

Reserve your judgement until all is revealed.

I hated those P+S things hanging off the front of a f900... I was sad to stop shooting film (both 35 and s16) but too many of my jobs (in the yeas before my 1st red 1) ended up not on film... Also that crap turned the crap that was the f900 into a 50-100 asa camera...

I am over the moon Red came with redcode, a s35 imager and lots of energy.... Still wish they would reconsider the name!

You too, Mark?? Spill the beans?? How is it? Do tell!!

I'll just pose a hypothetical question here.

...

But, let's just pretend for a second that Weapon is the best camera out there when it's available and is within your grasp to shoot on, is that name a "stopper" for you?

It might just be. I have to consider the reactions of the clients for whom I work. If I think the CEO I'm interviewing will take a takes a WTF view of the name on the side of my camera, it may well be a "stopper" for me.

Nice tease, but regardless of how good the camera upgrade is, its not going to be of much help when they extend my interview by 45 minutes at the Israeli border because of it.

I'll just pose a hypothetical question here.

If there is a camera on the market that produces images you like and has the workflow you desire does it matter what it's name is?

My long standing personal opinion is if it looks like a watermelon with a lens sticking out of it and is called "Juicy and Sticky", if it's making the images I want to capture I'd have no problem shooting with it.

Like or dislike the name, that's the real question I'm thinking exists here.

More or less if the name is getting in the way of shooting with it, I would personally reconsider that perspective entirely. To each their own though.

But, let's just pretend for a second that Weapon is the best camera out there when it's available and is within your grasp to shoot on, is that name a "stopper" for you?

The name is perfect!!

The camera will BLOW minds... PERIOD!!

Appreciate the candid discussion and all the feedback.

The name is here to stay.

There are some of you with genuine security concerns and for those that would prefer we will be offering a "stealth" Weapon without the Weapon branding engraved on it... simple check box at the time of order.
