Red vs Film test!

I'm surprised that Stephen would comment about posters getting trashed and not wanting to post... c.com

Hi Jim,

As you know perfectly well the best information does not get published anywhere. :matrix:

why is this in the footage section with no footage? can we all agree to only have links to footage in the first post of every thread in this section...?

I'm actually In agreement with this, I remember back to when the first hundred or so cameras where shipped and people where in here all excited waiting for the next bit of footage and screens to go up. I though the "footage" section of the forums was supposed to be about posting footage... or at least images.
Now days it's mostly dudes bragging about the awesome footage that they shot but can't show anything because the clients will get mad (which from the clients point of view is understandable However to the rest of us it's a huge tease).

Don't blame me, This post was moved here I did not originally post here!

The footage should be coming soon, i will at-least Post the RED stuff this week, we can see the film when it airs.
Mark

Well we only have the red footage, I guess we will have to wait until the commercial airs to do the comparison  .

i did some quick Color Correction but only in FCP did not have the time to go to Color. not to sure about the first shot, let me now what you think.

If you have QT Pro you can download the clip and view it at a higher resolution.

RED footage will never look like 35mm film... and 35mm film will never look like RED.
Why because simply they are not the same thing. RED will defenitly improve over the time and will have by far better picture quality than film, currently it's difficult to say which is ''better''. I've seen a ton of RED footage and most of it is GORGIOUS!!!! I've seen a ton of 35mm footage and most of it is GORGIOUS!!!!
Not the same dough!

And all this happens when RED is in this price? It is crazy, unbeliveble, and..and... I am gona work hard for two years to get RED, but I will get it, YOU HEAR ME JANNARD? I WILL GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND RED ZOOM AND PRIMES TOO!

WOW!!!!!

Great picture!! It really looks amazing! I'm stunned how beautiful it looks!!!!! The resolution is astonishing and the dynamic range is out of this world!

I'm flabbergasted!

It's hyper-REAL!!

only one thing though... it looks like video.

I am not expecting to see RED footage better than film, it is just a situation we had to compare the two side by side with the same lighting and the same shot. Film is the standard so i would like to know how the RED compares to the standard! Do you have footage that would show the comparison? i would like to see it.

No I don't have that, that must be footage that is taken under the same conditions, exactly what you are doing.

Sorry Josh,
where is the footage that you mention in your post?

Excuse me if this has been covered but...

I just received the April issue of In Camera magazine (published by Kodak).

It’s cover story is

Die Augenfalle
A comparison between film and HD 24P digital video.

It is an interview with the short film’s producer Thomas Repp BVK. It was directed by Elena Alvarex .

It was shot in simultaneously on 35mm and the F-900. They discuss filters, contrast, under and over cranking, depth of field, and dynamic range.

Interesting reading… considering the source.

These magazine articles are usually 3-6 months old. Notice how thin
all the video rags are getting. Next year their might only be a few left.
But yes the RED BestBuy spot was fantastic! Any chance of getting
a 1080 P version?

Red Vs Film

Red Vs Film

Hi Guys ,

In India Myself along with a senior cinematographer Mr.Santhosh Sivan had shot a series of comparitive shots both on Red and on Kodak film 500 ASA & 250 Asa. As of now we are doing the DI at Prie Focus and hpe to see the results tomorrow on a large screen projected on a film print. My only trouble during the shoot was the camera had a major booting problem. Every time we had to shut the camera down for a battery change it wouldnt re boot and we had to keep on re trying until it got sorted. At one time it even took 45 minutes to get back to working shape. I wonder if anybody has faced these kind of problem and would hae a suggestion........ The build of the camera is 15. We used Master primes and the red lens 18 to 50.

great, it would be nice if you can post some footage here after the screening.

booting issue was discussed a lot here, just take the search for it.
in the most cases, simply "tricks" are helping.

looking forward to your comparison results.

Beliving that film does not improve makes you igonerent.
New and better types comes out all the time.

And for a test you should not use the same ligth. Film and video does not use the same ligth set-up...

Red will never be better then film, only in price.

Hi,

I would disagree, you should use the same lighting for film or video, I think a great deal of video look is video lighting. (3 redheads pointed at a subject so as to reduce shaddows being the worst example I can think of)
