Hello World Citizens

I will be purchasing an Epic when Red ships me the Canon mount I ordered. As a long time still photographer I have collected a bag full of quality lenses that will be repurposed into my next venture of mixed media and film making.

In thinking through this major investment I have visited many forums and came away with a similar feeling: most of the discussion revolved around the "us vs them" theme arguing specs 'n such with little energy devoted to content quality, story telling much less contributing something back.

Unless I missing it, there seems to be missing a dedicated Forum where a guy like me could offer my time and pro equipment to help produce those little stories that need to be told. So much attention is paid to celebrity and fashion anymore - I would love to be involved in something meaningful and of substance that helps communicate an issue, to raise awareness which spurs good people into action.

The Pro Bono Forum could be a marketplace of resources and needs. Kind like Kickstarter.com without money exchange whereby projects can be posted with a list of production needs listed and a sign-up method for each. How cool would it be to contribute your time, knowledge, Red equipment and passion to those in need . . . right in your own community.

Who is with me on this and how do we start?

Josh, best forum idea in a long time! Every year I try to take on one charity project as my way of giving back and for the past three years I've been helping tell stories for the Accelerated Cure Project. I think this could be a great opportunity for filmmakers to help others in meaningful way. I have faith that people won't abuse the system as long as they are working directly with non-profits organizations and not a production company.

I'd say it would have to be not for profit, art exhibits, public awareness, service announcement type things(then again it should be up to the people involved). But this sounds like an amazing idea, unfortunately I'm in no place to donate my gear(have very little) and my skills are still... developing, but I can offer my assistance, ideas, and support until a time when I can meaningfully take part.

Great Idea!

Let's get this thread started!

This is a great idea because it's so practical.

Of course not every story in need will be or can be told by those generous enough to offer.

But stories told there will be.

I love the idea! I worked a lot with artists and it where always the most fun projects.
And agree fully with not for profit, so that no one 'shoots in there foot'.

I am not geared up yet, I need a bit more of time to get an Red Epic (or maybe scarlet in the feature).
But I fully support the idea, and if I can be any help I would love to.

I kinda had a same idea in the past, but couldn't pull it of.
I called it 'little space' and still have the url www.littlespace.org
If it is not possible on the red forum you always may use the url.

I am happy to support in any way I can!

I agree, certainly a good idea and worth following up on. I like many have had my fill of tech spec debates and discussion. The box is out and the next one is coming so this seem like a very timely idea. Count me in!

So....how does one go about this? I've done several things for free with my Red One, just for the learning experience. Will this be a forum where people offer themselves and their equipment, and others advertise there needs?

Good Josh ... good idea!

now, everyone
.. thinking .... (process started) ...

:-)

what about having ...

"PRO BONO PROFILES" with people offering contribution of any kind on one hand
and "PROJECTS" on the other ... which could be any kind, causes + charities and well as people, groups and startups in need for help ...

... providing a way (platform) to present, connect, communicate & discuss, stimulate, collaborate ...

... then connecting this to the social graph to spread the word into vimeo, youtube, facebook, twitter ...

yes?

Edit:

... with good ideas, there is no time to loose ... :-)

A "reduser pro bono" Section on reduser.net would be great for this (!)
to report on proceedings and share resulting work ...

... to get some momentum right now, lets connect and spread on facebook ...

(more stuff prepping, i´ve caught fire ... )

I love this idea, I would love to help in anyway I can with anything going on in the DC,MD,VA area.

I don't know if I would call it ProBono or not (more hobby), but I have yet to get paid for working on a film set (even when there were Reds involved) but some of the writers and directors I will be working with/for (right now and) once I get the Scarlet can only dream of ever using such a tool, I will be making it a reality.

I think a Pro Bono forum would be great for those who want to try a few of the more artistic works but from those of society whom never be able to afford to rent a RED camera, let alone buy one.

It is a good idea Josh. I have done Pro Bono work for years when time permitted. I just finished a piece for an upstart charity called the Spine Health Foundation. They assist the uninsured and underinsured in search of desperately needed spine surgery.

It was a bit more than I bargained for because it had no budget. Coming up with a concept, creating music and being a one man crew can be time consuming but I enjoyed the process and they loved the results. It was used in their kick off fund raiser a couple weeks back and is now on their Website.

Just be sure you know what you're getting into. It was a very rewarding experience for me.

cool Frank ... (!) ... i´ve got heavy spine surgery starting from age 14 ... and to this day, pain is a daily companion ... guess many people will thank you for helping to spread the news ... :-)

I don't envy you Detlev. Spine injury is life changing. I was somewhat clueless of the problems people endure. It's an example of why we can make a difference. Hope you are doing well now.
