  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Touch LCD stutters on new Scarlet

I haven't heard back from Red, but i'm confident that they'll come up with a response soon. Meanwhile i found a few other people that have the same problem and thought it was normal for the Scarlet; also an Epic owner who has this problem with BOTH his Epic and Scarlet and both his LCDs.

As said before, it is absolutely NOT my intention to create a source of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) - thanks Peter - but this issue needs to be addressed, without asking all those people to return their cameras.

For sure, i can tell you that it's NOT normal, because i've seen one working perfectly fine without any stuttering, a month ago.
I sincerely hope it's a software-manageable issue.

Martin

Hi,
I'm experiencing the same problem.
30fps smooth playback, but 24 and 25 have issues and stutter via the LCD. Did you return your LCD, did you find a solution or is it firmware related? Thanks

Hello Sebastian.

Loved your presentations of the Scarlet on Cinema5D!
Since you were one of the first Scarlet owners, did you also thought it was normal behavior?
Didn't shooting with the Scarlet drive you crazy because of this problem (i find it very hard to make smooth camera moves with the stuttering going on) ?

I did not find a solution - tried everything - neither have i've been offered one (yet).

Martin

Martin, I don't think you have to worry about what others will think. If they wish to be fearful, uncertain and doubtful then it's on them. Your concern is laudable but I hope you don't worry about other people's fears. There needs to be transparency for us buying a $15K product.

I second that!

I see a lot of people hesitant to even report a problem - and that benefits no one - as RED can't fix issues it doesn't know about.

Problems are to be expected, and we (and I use that term loosely as I have not yet received my Scarlet) really need to be aggressive in reporting any issues so they can get dealt with quickly - and talking about them on this forum.

I saw a thread about a Scarlet owner's first commercial shoot with a Scarlet, that just happened to have a number of problems, pulled by the author due to the reaction he got from people.

The fact that he had problems really didn't bother me. The fact that he pulled his own thread due to an environment that made it difficult for him to discuss valid problems on paid shoot, did give me a LOT a pause.

An issue that isn't dealt with until it affects an even larger number of shipments - doesn't benefit RED, or Scarlet users, or anyone.

I now already know 12 people with a below-1000 serial number who experience this problem. Add to this, the number of people that don't visit this site or the Scarlet facebook group, or just think it's normal. Knowing that, one can say that a fair percentage of all Scarlets suffer from this problem. Or is it an LCD issue..? Nevertheless, i think it's important enough to address and that it is not an incident.
But if nobody reports the problem to Red support, but only to me... That's silly...

I also have it. (Scarlet-X 0830) 24p is bad, 25 a little better, 30 best. I shoot 25p mostly and it`s definitely annoying. RED should address this soon.

EDIT: just sent an email to tech support. will let you know here what the answer is.

Thomas. I read your response on facebook.com (https://www.facebook.com/groups/262309420495440/) and that of Red support.
Reinstalling/upgrading firmware did not help.
Changing the brain?! Changing the LCD cable?! Changing the LCD?!
I know only two people in the Netherlands who own a Scarlet and one is having the same problems! "Knowing" them is an overstatement though.
There are enough people in de US that have the same problem, including Epic owners, who maybe have easier access to spare brains, cables and LCDs.

There is no way to judge smooth camera movement without replaying each shot. The stutter also influences my eye/hand coordination.

Didn't hear back from Red the last two weeks.
I have a music video shoot tomorrow and i'm not amused.

its firmware related i guess, wasnt there with 1.7x, but with 2.05+ we did test 4 different epics (M,X) with all of them having their own LCDs.
a dop was really annoyed because of that, and the rental company (was a projects friend doing it with epics from another company, and we upgraded to 2.05 for testing)
and it is just there.
the rental company provided a TV logic with a smooth mode. (dont remember which model)
so please bring back what whatever was changed :)

Hey guys. Firmware 3.0 came out and is now on my Scarlet. The problem is still there. And on a side note so you don't make the same mistake: The update deleted my presets, I guess I could have thought of that, but they could have put that into the update procedure txt next to the other warnings.

I did the following test:
Since the framerate the camera really records is set under "project" I thought maybe if I had set that to 25 and the front menu fps to 30 I could have the best of both worlds. Fail. Filming a fan and a lightbulb revealed that there's an obvious difference in the perception of light with the 25 and 30 fps front menu setting even though the file itself is always 25 under "project". That might have been obvious, but I thought I'd give it a try, you never know.

@Martin: I should have seen this problem before my test, but up until recently I had always used the Scarlet handheld or fixed without pans. And during the car chase scene I was shaking and screaming behind the camera with ice blowing around my head...

I cannot rent the camera without a fix for that. The people who rent from me do commercials and I'll never rent this camera again if I rent it like this.

i can't tell if my red touch is different, or maybe it is just a matter of the LCD's speed in general, but to me a bit stuttered look of 24fps on the LCD does look if not normal, but I'd say familiar,
I get the same on my EX1 and EX3;

I assume everyone that is complaining knows the difference between 24fps stutter and 60fps ( like what you see on a DSLR ) stutter.. heh heh heh we just had one guy show us this problem and he clearly did not. Funny stuff. He was a bit embarrassed.

but.. we are going by the few people that have said they push a button and it stops.. so looking into it.. could always be a bug.

Jarred. Did you have a look at my video? I put it on private on Youtube for the time being. I've made it public just now, so you can have a look at what i see on my monitor.

Let me know when i can take it offline.

Thanks for your concern.

Martin

Thanks Martin.. just watched it. The engineers are at work :)

I have a weird issue. About 10% of the upper portion of my HDSDI monitor output stutters. Though everything else seems to function as it should. I see it on recording and playback as well. Touch LCD and footage on SSD are fine. Will have to do some more testing to isolate this.

Jarred, thanks for looking into it. It's definitely not a normal 24 or 25p stutter. Martin's video gives a good impression of how the stutter feels. It comes in waves, about a second apart and it's quite severe during pans.

Yup I believe you guys... this is definitely something different.

Martin, we never got in touch again, but looking at your video and putting on my 85mm for the first time this week, it seems that i am having the same problem in 25p. Didn't notice it before, but with the longer lens the behavior is more apparent. hmmm, let's see if this can get resolved. Did you already post the camera to RED europe?
