  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED TOUCH 5.0" LCD -VS- DP6-SDI — 5.6" Field Monitor

Hi Craig, Thanks for your reply.
Do you mean we can't control the audio levels from 3rd party monitors? By the way right now I am considering only the LCD monitors not the redmote. Nice to know that red monitor has additional functionalities in comparison to the redmote.

Good to hear that you never had a problem with the 256GB cards! Will wait a day or two and then order for one.

Not sure what you're getting at - The RED Touch is a touchscreen (like an iPad or iPhone) that communicates back to the camera allowing you to change settings on the camera. A Dp6 is just an SDI (or HDMI) monitor that does not 'communicate' back to the camera.

Hi Ravi

yes that is what I am saying,

Glen, I am trying to make a purchase based on information and comparison.
I have no clue what the difference between the Red monitor and the DP6 SDI is, except for some specs like the resolution.
Just wanted to know other reasons for paying more for the Red monitor (800 × 480) when its resolution is far less than the DP6 (1280 x 800).

I have no option but to keep asking until the bits and pieces of information make a comprehensive case.

Thanks for your time
Ravi

Just to be clear.....

If i get a dp6... OR even used Older REd 5.6 inch , or 7inch REd Pro monitor.... can i use with scarlet no problem?? and using THE SIDEHANDLE or REDMOTE, still navigate through the menus with no problem... using ANY monitor to view the menus, and controling it with the side handle toggle wheel and buttons??

Didn't mean to offend you so easily...

I was on a job and forgot the 5.0 LCD Touch (was excited to test the Bomb EVF) and was able to do everything needed.
I would have to test that set up to see if there is a sub-menus that you cant get to. Epic is out this week.

If all you want is a monitor to operate and judge focus and you have no fingers, then get the DP6.

If you want the easiest way to control the camera (including turning over 10 feet away by double tapping it) as well as judging focus get the Touchscreen.

In most situations with a 1st AC you will want both (or a Bomb).

Hello Kalechi

In the last version of firm ware for the Epic I, used, the only way I could find to change the audio level faders in the audio input window was the touch screen, The REDMOTE and the Side handle could access the page, but would not allow for selection of the fader and allow adjustment of the fader. Hopefully this will change in future firm ware who knows may even the Scarlet release might have this feature, but only RED knows.
Tomorrow I will install 1.7.9 Beta and see if this has been changed in the new firmware and let you know.

One additional Mention from page 109 of the RED EPIC firmware 1.7.9 beta

WARNING: IT IS NOT ADVISABLE TO REMAP THE NAVIGATION KEYS (UP. DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT) SELECT (ENTER OR MENU) ON THE SIDE HANDLE AS IT IS THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE TO GET INTO A SITUATION WHERE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO RESTORE THE FACTORY KEY PRESET ANYMORE IF NO TOUCH SCREEN IS ATTACHED TO THE SYSTEM

Since I haven't received my Bomb yet, I've been using both side by side and the DP6 is definitely the way to go for focus. The color is very close between the two, and the 5" is a great image for its size. If I didn't have the DP6 it would be a lot harder to check focus exclusively off the 5". But having the touch screen access is critical.

I have gathered, made quick edits and listed out the suggestions from different users:

1. Only way to control the camera unless you have a side handle or REDMote.

2. Touch-control menu access AND touch-screen focus control are plus points

3. The touch is powered by the brain, you will need a battery for the DP6

4. Checked by a user on the Epic - the only way to control the audio levels was the touch screen, You can get to the audio input screen with the redmote or side handle but the side handle and the redmote dials did not adjust the levels.
He does not know if this is also the case on the scarlet.

5. The RED Touch is a touchscreen (like an iPad or iPhone) that communicates back to the camera allowing you to change settings on the camera. A Dp6 is just an SDI (or HDMI) monitor that does not 'communicate' back to the camera.

6. If you want the easiest way to control the camera (including turning over 10 feet away by double tapping it) as well as judging focus get the Touchscreen.

1. Outside the 5.0 Touch LCD Red monitor was near impossible to see and so low of resolution that critical focus was very hard for bad eyes. If you can get a side handle, I would go with the DP6

2. DP6 is definitely the way to go for focus. The color is very close between the two, and the 5" is a great image for its size. If I didn't have the DP6 it would be a lot harder to check focus exclusively off the 5"

Download the EPIC manual - Not exactly the same as the Scarlet, but we've been led to believe that they will operate the same way. Lot's of info to digest about what the monitor will help you do as far as exposure control etc.

Conclusion: If you think you will be missing out on some features offered by the RedTouch get Red Monitor
If Focus and resolution is important than other features of Red monitor get DP6.

From my understanding :- if using a 3rd party monitor it plugs into the hdmi / hd-sdi out which menas you cannot also use a prores recorder (ninja, ki pro mini, pix240) as well.

So if you want prores on the fly to hand off to a client you must get the touch screen or evf. Can someone confirm this?

Well I will make sure not to go near a lake with the SSD's. ; )
But what if I am away from the lake, what could go wrong? Did anyone face problems within their SSD's, eliminating external factors. When you think it's safe in the camera or in the Red station or SSD case

I want to take as many suggestions as possible before committing. I will definitely aim to get another SSD within a few months.

Appreciate your Advise
Ravi

The SSDs have been flawless for me, both on R1and Epic. But I'd still never work with just one SSD. the reason is that when you fill one up, you are stuck until you get it offloaded. If its a 256, that can be a long time. (go to your computer and copy 256 Gig to the fastest drive you own. Unless you're Jeff Kilgroe, you'll sit there for a long time.) With 2 SSDs, you can keep shooting while you offload.

Just offload to quick SSD disks and to spinning ones. :)

I'll tell ya - for the freakish amount of money the RED SSD's cost (in comparison to where general use market SSD's are - which are still expensive) there better NOT be a single problem with them.

We do long form work and are looking at having to spend 6K+ on storage to get into a Scarlet. Truthfully, this has made the purchase a considerably less a "no brainer" but we're trying to get over it for the assumed bullet proof reliability the RED storage must provide...

Anyone have ANY RED SSD failures? I would most interested in knowing if so.

Most monitors and recorders have HD-SDI Loop-Through. You can absolutely run a monitor AND recorder off HD-SDI.

I plan to use my DP1X as a secondary monitor via HDMI. Along with the 5.0" touch screen as my primary

Crucial question, that seems unanswered to me - how hungry is Red Touch LCD when compared to Red 5.6 LCD (4.6W) and Red Pro 7 LCD (2.8W)?
In other words, how much does it draw from an already overdrawn Redvolt, when running small?

If you were to choose the DP-6 is the SDI input worth the extra $350? What are the benefits of SDI over the HDMI?

Thank you

I've worked with Red since August 2007, and never touched HDMI.
SDI is a professional connection - cleaner signal, BNC barrel clicks in and stays, allows for muuuuuch longer cable runs
And when talking about an on-board for Epic/Scarlet, a critical thing to realize is that both cameras only have one HD-SDI out, so you need a pass-though swich-out functionality.
what that gives you is the ability to come out of that monitor though a SDI-OUT and go to another monitor for client, and another, and so on... if you need to. as long as all the monitors have switch-outs

DP6-SDI has that ability. so does TV Logic VFW-56W

i've only worked with TV-Logic, it's a bit on a bulky/heavy side - wonder if anyone has compared it to DP6
