  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Future of the RED One?

Well, speaking for myself, I'm going to upgrade to mysterium x and then concentrate fully on my work; which is an easy decision because, knowing myself, once I start contemplating buying an epic I won't be satisfied until I have the best one there is, and I won't be able to afford that anyway; so I won't contemplate

Like I said earlier, I'll be using my RED ONE for the next 5-10 years at least. RED ONE image quality rivals film that has been showing in cinemas for decades upon decades. Just because there is an upgraded model available with more technological advances, that should not undermine the achievement and usefulness of the RED ONE. It's all the camera I need. Long live the RED ONE!!!

RED 1 #1948

I will be keeping My Red One...I know that many rental houses will be doing the same. Most likely upgrading the sensor when the time comes. There are too many "Hypebeasts" out there. Like Jannard said "You will wish you owned a Red 1".

I very much doubt there will be any R1 cameras going to a landfill in the next few years. (If any do, I will be searching that landfill.) People are still selling DSLR cameras from several generations ago, even though the newest one is the ABSOLUTE GREATEST THING if you believe the online forums. Used EOS 10D cameras are being sold on Ebay now... that model was released in 2003, and it is 4-5 model generations old. That is the consumer market- for pro cine gear, I think people/companies hold onto things longer.

Lets all keep our Red 1s and invest more in good story telling so the audience will get a better movie in the overall....:undecided:
Let's say you cannot "dispose" of your RED ONE until you've filmed a feature on it, or you've used it to earn $100,000. net profit.

I don't think there's a real environmental issue here. I doubt so many RED Ones will just be off to the landfill. Jim already stated in this thread that there should be a market for used RED Ones, Remanufactured, upgraded to M-X, etc.. Most electronic components these days are very recyclable anyway. Starting with all that aluminum.

While it will be "obsolete", it'll still be used. So many people will still use their Red as a B-Cam, many will sell them off (hopefully some for discounts), and I could see a lot of University level film programs grabbing their own Red's if the market price for them drops a little.

I really hope the planned monstro upgrade for the R1 actually happens. I think that would keep the R1 alive for quite some time.

Also, lower data rates aren't always a bad thing (ie, rc28), and second, I'm intrigued at how the R1 would handle a 16bit sensor, having been designed for a 12bit one. Hopefully rc42 will be enough..
