Hi Guys - I recieved the 4.7" along with my Scarlet-W kit and although the small form factor is nice, I really don't like that red for some reason did away with the 360 swivel feature on the DSMC2 4.7" monitor.

However, I find it extermley difficult at times to see if things are in tack focus especially outdoors.

Is the 7" worth the upgrade? --- I've heard it's MUCH dimmer than the 4.7" and very difficult to see outdoors without a sun-shade.

True?

Thx

They are two different beasts when it comes to building and rigging.

The 4.7" is a rugged thing that can survive a fair amount of banging around and mostly can live on the camera.

The 7.0" you'll be detaching often when stowing or you're going to whack it wrong and that would be bad.

As for usability in daylight, I've been working with 2X 7.0" LCD Touches for a long, long while now. I prefer them to lock focus as you describe, but I also don't have much problem with the 4.7" really when I've used it.

The best thing for daylight for me is the Bomb EVF OLED for obvious reasons. The eye cup blacks out the world and the color and picture quality on that little thing is very good. But if I was pulling focus with it 100% of the time don't know if I'd love that. Most shoots I have the 7.0" LCD Touch and Bomb EVF on the camera, which is a recent development due to the fondness of the EVF. That's just the way I work.

Thanks Phil - I can't justify spending $4k for the new EVF so Im really torn between the 7" or keeping my 4.7". Is the brightness really any issue outdoors on the 7" ?

Go for the 7.0", it will make you happier. I don't have any real issues regarding brightness like that.

I also have the new 4.7" and the 7". I prefer the 7" by far since for me this is the standard size of field monitor I'm use to filming with and is currently used on our Scarlet-W A-cam. The 4.7" is on our Raven and is only used for gimbal work and B-roll. As far as daytime use on the 7", I haven't had any more issue with it than any other 400nit+ monitor I've used - especially those from SmallHD.

I adore the 7 inch. The first time I used it was on ibc, I was blown away. Always used the old 5 inch.
Still don't regret it. Yeah it's pretty big and sometimes looks a bit goofy. Like your going to put the camera in the water and it's going to sail away :P

But the quality is amazing. And when you go back after a while to 5/4,7 inch it looks like it's for ants and your fingers look a lot bigger.

Down here in Florida it's really tough to pull focus on any of the RED monitors during the day. Lately I've just been using the 4.7" out of convenience for adjusting camera settings. But I'm also using a Atomos Shogun Flame. It's great to quickly go through LUTs, since it can record to me it's more convenient when playing back shots to the client while my assistant can work on the camera, I can monitor HDR if the project calls for it, and it's 1500 nits
