It's been almost two years since the first batch of RED ONE Cameras shipped. In that time period, SO MUCH has happened not only for RED but in the world of Cinema and Motion Media in general.

RED has continually upgraded their Camera specs, accessories, and software and thousands of projects have been completed successfully, from music videos, docs, commercials, print media, to shorts, indies, and big budget features.

But this past week, it seems as if yet another paradigm shift has occurred and I believe the ripple effect is going to be felt around the world the likes we've not seen in a long time.

Just this past week we witnessed more RED firsts, such as the release of RED Rocket™, the completion of REDucation SN#001, and more and more integration with many standard hardware and software platforms. Also build 20 has improved the image quality, and the forthcoming SDKs and RED Apps are going to allow third parties to develop even better toolsets and workflows.

In the next few months, a significant amount of Features shot on RED will be hitting theaters. And this fall season will have a record amount of primetime shows shot with RED.

Add on to that the new RED Pro Lenses, and the upcoming release of Scarlet, EPIC, and RED RAY, and it's going to be one wild ride.

If we think RED has made an impact thus far, brace yourself for the real Tidal Wave to come!

Really? I only know of one, if we're talking about broadcast networks. What others do I not know about?

Not to mention the products we don't know about yet (they're my favourite products from Red:) .The integration thus far has been nothing short of crazy everything has gone Red-centric you talk of a paradigm shift, welcome to the Rednaissance period. The affordability of quality is a true liberation .

How about all the photographers shooting video? Thats wild! flashes byebye

It will be amazing for stills guys shooting news and sports. Just run your cursor through shot and find your perfect still.

...and the skill of feeling the moment and taking the right shot at the right moment is gone. Sure it will be super, but not the same feeling.

Hey Casey, I could not have put it better, what RED has done so far in my believes is nothing but presenting couple of finger foods before the seven course meal!

Every were I turn or talk to, there is a Movie been shot on RED and a TV series Shot on RED, Documentaries Shot on RED, more and more Photo Shoots tests run on RED.

Personally I'm preparing the large list of my Photography gear and starting to prepare to a major and final sale to say good by for ever to al my Photography gear, including Flashes, Strobes etc.

As I did when moved from film to digital, I had to relearn the Art, literally, as now most of the work is done in Post, and so back to school I went.

Now I believe that with the event of Scarlet/Epic, the game will change again, and it will not be like the change from film to digital, this change to any style of shooting will be seriously Profound, in any venue, in any style, from Portrait photography, to sport photography, Birding Photography, commercial Photography, and so on.

Will I be bother by the fact that now I can shoot a burst at up to 350fps, and not in need to calculate the exact fraction of a second shooting over and over till you get it right, with thousands of ws worth of strobe lights, NO I will not, in fact I so look forward to that, and only carry Continuos lighting and gear that now will be totally interchangeable from Cine/Video/photo gigs.

ciao

I think what Casey has said here is so true, and it reminds me of something I read in an awesome book by Walter Murch called In The Blink Of An Eye about film editing. Even though his 2nd edition to the book was back in 2001, he knew what was coming. In his book he said, "In the almost-immediate future, then - when final projection and original photography are digitized - the entire technical process of filmmaking will be digital from start to finish, and the whole technical infrastructure will telescope in upon itself with great suddenness. Some of the consequences of this we can foresee; others are unpredictable. But this transformation will likely be complete in less than ten years."

Ten years from then is 2011. RED is what is making this transformation possible, and I believe it could be complete by then.

This is an exciting day and age for digital cinematography, and I think it's awesome that other companies are springing up too, manufacturing digital cinema cameras, like Ikonoscop, Sparta, and the Drama camera. Whether or not these cameras come to fruition or achieve the price/performance ratio that RED has and will is beside the point. I think it's great that other people are joining in the revolution against the 'big' guys, and putting their heart and soul into designing and manufacturing digital cameras that definitely can compete with what is out there.

I've spent a fair amount of time scrubbing through 29.9 fps video for the perfect freeze frame, and I have to tell you; in about 40% of the cases, your perfect still just doesn't exist... and that is shooting slow moving subjects. I'd be interested to find out how well it works at 100 fps, but then we have also to consider motion blur. You need serious shutter speeds and/or flash to freeze fast moving sports. 1/500, 1/1000... I haven't looked at the 645 specs. Will it do that in cine mode? What is 1/1000 converted to shutter angle?

It will be nice to shoot FX plates with the same camera/lens combo.

Depends on your framerate, of course. At 100fps you would need a shutter angle of 36 degrees...

It's not so much getting the shutter speed up that's the issue, but having enough light (or a sensitive enough sensor, to put it another way) that will be the issue. A Canon 1D is pretty clean right up to 1600ASA or so, so the same would need to be true of an FF35/645 Epic for it to compete.

Cheers,
Dom.

You can add to the list that the number one film in America this weekend was primarily shot on a RED one. That has got to feel good.

For me RED is the ARRI of the 21st century. If You look into ARRI's history, they started in a very similar way. RED has the same potential and it is even going beyond just the gear with the integrated workflow tools and SDK's. RED is also doing this at an extremely accelerated rate as compared with ARRI. ARRI is here to stay, but I am sure they are feeling the RED tidal wave already. First the cameras with the accessories, now the lenses. We can only imagine what is next...

I, for one, could not be happier...

 Peter

TV Series on Red, how about, "Angel of Death". I know there's more....

I just can't wait to ride the wave. (no rush)

Well Written Casey and it's all true

Just add to your well written thread, Red also made many Small Guys Big, but also made Some Big Guys Small. :001_smile:
Red opened the doors to many great talents....

Cheers
