I'm just happy the word "projector" was in Jim's post. Really, really can't wait for that one to arrive! Anyway, great post all around. Love Jim's reflective posts and state of RED updates or whatever you want to call them. :)

Me too. This one is super huge. I have a distribution pilot project supported our federal government hinged upon Red Projector. It's a multi-pronged approach where we literally take my film Path Of Souls into First Nation/Native American communities and show the movie in 4K just like they'd experience if they traveled to a major urban centre...we are bringing the film and the tech to them.

If this approach works it will open up brand new distribution possibilities and create a number of new jobs. Once the model is established it would also serve as a distribution advance that could be used to complete financing of Native films based on the potential 'box office' in the 1,000+ communities that exists across North America. And we couldn't so any of it without Red -well we could, but the model wouldn't be feasible!

In my experience (as an Engineer), we generally say it's going to take 2x as long, and Marketing hears "1/2 as long" - and then when it takes twice as long as the marketing estimate, the customer hears (from Marketing) "It's the Engineers fault!". :001_cool:

The bleeding edge is called that for a reason.

I've backed RED since day one and always will. Jim, you guys have the attitude that I wish every camera company would have. I really respect that. Now I just have one request. Can you PLEASE make a camera more suited for one man band documentary work? I have been trying to jump onto the RED bandwagon for years now, but just can't bring my self to do it. I need a small camera with an incredibly long battery battery life that shoots with an S35 sensor in Redcode RAW, with built in XLR's and phantom power, and with ergonomics and size that that match the likes of the C100/C300. Most people would tell me I am unrealistic for asking such a thing, and I am. Thats why I am asking you and not Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc.

The Scarlet plus Redbrick, while small, is just too big and heavy for the dangerous environments that I work in that require very discrete filming.

Even though I do not own any RED products, I am always behind you guys 100%. Thanks for everything.

In my biggest hype-monster voice… I shout, we are just beginning. We have dreams that cannot be imagined. Once we deliver what you know about… there is more. Much more… only this time, we aren't going to tell you until they are done.

Jim

It's more fun to know in advance, and watch the process unfold. The tools we have in hand are so good it's getting easier to wait, though I suspect, now that Red is being copied in so many ways, there are business reasons not to show your hand.

BTW Obsolescence Obsolete - The way you kept that commitment is world class. I'm referring to the Red One trade in program. Not a surprise that Red needed another hardware iteration in this development process.

Heh. Right now, we are waiting for the rest of the industry to catch up to you. And I'm not even talking about the camera industry. I'm talking about the IT industry. We need to be able to work with 4K like it was nothing at all. And that's not really RED's problem to solve. Although I hope RED will facilitate... rather, continue to facilitate.

RED is known for thinking big. Really big. Over the moon big. RED stirs the pot. We are also honest to a fault. Did I say we have no idea what we are doing? Everything changes including specs, pricing and delivery dates?

how dare you. . . so the way i read this, you began describing RED's DNA. . . "the stuff that makes RED RED" . . . and you end by saying that RED's DNA will be changed. . . how dare you. . . for whom? For everyone who is raving about all things RED and have been supporting RED the way RED was/is? Obviously not. . . for they love RED the way it is. From the beginning, RED was more than just a simply tool that was ahead of the competition. . . it was "this", the community and mentality, which happens to be misunderstood by some. . . dude how many times does your wife misunderstand your words and you hers? No biggy, you still r lovin her the way she is and so does she love you (I assume :P )
Anyone who spends some time here and trys to make HIS/HER own opinion, will see that the people here are just VERY enthusiastic about all things "filmmaking" - that's all!
Gettin into a heated argument is soo much fan than simply agreeing on everything ^^

So you want to change what RED "is", for. . . the haters? Man, you said it yourself by mentioning the long-ass list of all the pro's who trusted RED (ya know. . . where there is LOTS of money in the game, so the "camera" is peanuts in terms of budget, but they "still" chose RED. . .) and more and more are being added to that list, not mentioning ALL the people on this board. . .

ya know what this sounds like? Makes me think of these directors who made some KICK ASS movies when they were younger, more radical and had that "dont like it? well f u, too"-attitude ya know, the ones winning all them big prices and havin people ALL over the world waitin for their next mov(i)e. . . many of them started to "play it save" when they got a bit more "mature" and somehow, it is still an unsolved "mystery" as to why. . ., they "vanished from the map''. . .

stay true to RED's DNA ... it's been getting better and better, year over year. . . why change whats not broken ffs. . . ^^
Unless of course, ya like the way them dinosaurs in this biz (sony etc) been handling things and ya wanna go down that path :P

oh and btw, if a hater is reading this and going "what a fanboi -.-", ironically, I never even seen a RED in reallife ^^ been shooting on my gh2 & studying the craft...

So basically, what I've been tryin to say/ask is "It has been so much fun so far, why change the game plan (and for whom?!?) ?"

cheers

Be RED and stay true to yourself, this is one of the biggest elements that seperates you from the other guys! Please unlock the vault and start sharing slivers of the future again!

Please Noooo....
Don't do it, do not go that route. Then you are just a camera manufacturer as anyone else, even if you would be a good one you are then just doing what the other guys does but hopefully a bit better.

My hope is that you open up more, take usage of peoples knowledge and let people contribute, I think that if you work behind closed doors you do not get half the distance.

And most important: What people think while you do something is irrelevant, It's what they think when you are done that matters...

There are many tools out there that match your description, but shoot 1080. The challenge for 4-6K is heat. Processing that much data that quickly requires a fairly robust computer brain, which generates quite a lot of heat. Not sure how much smaller you can get with Red resolution. But they COULD make a module that meets the needs of solo shooters. The pro I/0 is still oriented to double system audio. I've been campaigning for years for a simple audio solution with meters and pots, basically a mixer module.

Because, er, EVERYTHING changes. ;)

There is no reason to be holding any heads low-- Epic as is still takes out every other camera out there for my uses.

Dragon will be great, lets make sure she's ready for the world -- now is the world ready for the RED DRAGON...

Unleash the Dragon when it's good and ready, we are all here in support of all your hard work.

I find it somewhat endearing hearing about the development along the way. Late is certainly a trait at this point, but for the most part it gives folks like me time to get things together for when that time comes.

As for hype, I don't think any of the Red cameras at this point under-delivered. If anything I think it's been the polar opposite. Especially with how the landscape looks like now. Red's always delivered on that front. I think we've come to expect it.

I concur, I wouldn't have been able to purchase the Scarlet if it hadn't been announced so "early" and have had time to save up for it, even with the extra costs. I'm not worried about dates of release for products, but I do love hearing what's new for the future and how we can utilize the tools for new work.

I'd be totally happy to come in and sign an NDA and...consult, you know....yeah, consult...haaa. I laugh because I'm in no position for that, I just want to see the shiny! :-P

Thanks for the post, it feels great to be part of it.

Late?
I'm happy you all take the time, rather than to rush stuff out.

Dreaming big is wonderful. With the right tools in hand, it is certainly the way to go, if success is the target.

Personally I think its fine that you guys take your time. People already have functional cameras right now to use... Sure the new features/sensors will be awesome, but MX beats nothing... That or I'm just missing my MX since I sent it in to service and am stuck shooting DSLRs atm...Its all relative is my point... MX pwns my DSLR...

Got so used to shooting raw motion I just did a HDSLR gig and forgot to check the WB until mid shoot, whoops lol!

In a way it's a great thing that RED has so many enthused users chomping at the bit to get a Dragon in their hands...

I'm pretty sure it's a testament to how badass these cameras are.... were... and will continue to be for an awful long time.

take your time... get it right... we're all on this ride with you... (insert action movie preview voice) in a world filled with violence and crime, one company is moving in a positive direction... one forum post at a time.

Much more… only this time, we aren't going to tell you until they are done.

Jim

Anyone else realize how hard this will be for Mr Jannard? I think it is a good business practice, but I think RED will be severely late on delivering the last part of this sentence. It's just part of RED DNA
