Hi!

I have been told that we could expect a release this year.
How realistic is this?

I can guarantee you that he wasn't told by me. I've been "telling" people for a very long time that there will be no scarlets this year.

I guess my question relates to how credible the "telling" and the "teller" was; and anyone who isn't on the inside of RED, is, in my book, not very credible in "telling" anybody anything about Scarlet delivery.

And who told you there wouldn't be any Scarlets this year? ;)

No one who wasn't just guessing, like everyone else.

The new web site now suggests "early 2011" so I guess that is the most official "best guess" yet.

I'd go further to say that nobody is credible in predicting Scarlet delivery. :biggrinjester:

(Not that I hold any grudges or ill will)

I was "told" second hand from someone who works at RED, meaning I didn't hear it first hand. I live a few miles from RED so the small world is really small when it's all local. My friend has a good friend who works for RED. They also come into the bar where I work too. The bar is literally like a mile from RED.

When it comes to RED, I take what I hear from people a lot more seriously than the rampant speculation on these forums. It's never done me wrong yet. And when I say "what I hear from people", I don't mean like at a tradeshow when a RED marketing guy speaking with the marketing machine in full swing.

However, "EARLY 2011" certainly means within the first six months of 2011 which is actually sooner than I expected the Scarlets to be here and available for purchase. So yeah, I'm a bit encouraged by that.

Jim stated several times that Scarlet will ship this year. Specs and delivery subject to change, count on it.

That was before the HDRx upgrade, which is due to "mildly impact" release date. Which, in my very flawed interpretation, is a couple of months. So, it was December 2010 before, but now it is "Early 2011" as it says on the website. Between February and NAB 2011 is my guess. This is for the Scarlet 2/3" Fixed.

Guys remember the leaders at Red are also very savvy marketers
-- and they are very observant of massively successful companies like Apple.

From a business and marketing perspective, it doesn't typically make sense
to launch multiple highly anticipated products at the same time. Why let
one product steal/limit the thunder of another product?

Apple would have never released the iPad and iPhone 4 at exactly the same
time ... because there's a constant battle for attention, and each product
released on their own will get much more of it.

Now translate over to Red ... since Epic is first and projected on the new
Red site to be released at the "end" of this year (which is subject to change)
and since Epic truly IS the most revolutionary digital cinema technology ever
created to this point -- they may want to give it the proper exposure and not
limit its impact by releasing other products at the same time.

(Even if the Scarlet is ready to go.)

Now, I'm not suggesting Red WOULD withhold fully "ready" products just to
have more marketing impact, because unlike iPads and phones, many
filmmakers have hard deadlines and urgently need the cameras.

Still, I'm just saying that from a purely business/marketing point of view,
it makes sense to focus and stagger your product releases in order to make
the biggest possible splash. And it gives your company more opportunities to
always be in the "news" and appear like the hottest, most progressive
company.

Again, Apple has had a record year -- and look at what they have done with
the iPad .. iPhone 4 ... iPod touch ... MacBook Air ... all powerful updates or
new products (in the case of the iPad) that have kept them in the minds
and hearts of many computer users.

So ... even if Red has gotten the manufacturing and everything under control,
I would still expect new product releases every few months -- not all at once.

I.e. Epic (late December) ... Scarlet Fixed (Feb) ... Scarlet S35 (May/June) ...
etc.

Yes, I realize this is all conjecture! Everything is subject to change ... even
my conjecture ;-)

People need to stop making threads like this one...and I need to stop reading them at 4 in the morning when I should be asleep.

Until Jim posts another update there is NO NEW INFORMATION.

Early 2011 sounds like atleast within Q1. But noobody knows anyway. Hopefully we can get a firm date in the end of January. Would love to have a final date thats is fixed!

Jim stated several times that Scarlet will ship this year. Specs and delivery subject to change, count on it.

Yes, but Jim has also stated several other (now past) release dates, that haven't been met...mainly due to the constant evolution of the Scarlet.

The truth is that none of the consumers on these forums knows when the Scarlet is going to be released.

It may even be possible that the RED team themselves don't know when Scarlet will be released.

To answer the OP's question, no firm dates have been provided by RED; the closest thing being Jim's: "By the end of the year" statement, followed by the website saying early 2011, which is unlikely given the upgrade (which I think is awesome) to HDRx™...

In my own speculatory (yes, that's a made up word) opinion, I would expect Scarlet to be released this time next year...

This thread topic has been discussed several times, and is some-what irrelevant. The OP's question has been answered.

I'd be curious as to whom you were "told" by.

RED team via e-mail half a year ago:

Hey Tom,
Thank you for the email! The latest we have heard on RedUser stated that we should expect some Scarlet's out by the end of the year. Keep in mind nothing has been officially released but we are hoping that the end of the year is a good time line. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you,

Yes, but since then they decided to add HDRx which means more processing power is needed. Hence the delay until the beginning of 2011. And that is just the next goal. We'll see if they manage that or if there will be more problems/changes along the way.
