  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION

Another concern of mine before I spend $250, does it support read/write new CF5.0 specifications and will your new cards and camera reader/writer be 5.0 standard or 4.1? This is kinda a big deal considering fast bit rates for such large files.

Compact flash association website below, there's a link that you can download a pdf with all the super coolness of 5.0...

I don't really get all the "nice price" comments. $250 for a card reader is very expensive and $250 for a power supply is extremely expensive.

On the other hand, equipment that doesn't fail is priceless so any price goes if Red will guarantee indestructibility.

As some of you know, I think the Red is by far the best digi cine cam out there, well worth the $$ - BUT why not just get a portable hard drive cf card reader combo? For 500 Gigs we are talking maybe $500. They are very, very fast, and battery operated. Then you just dump your whole drive to your main systems in the hotel room as you sleep.

I think the biggest question is reliability. Well that and compatibility as well. It's true you could do what you've mentioned, and the prices are good, but looking at the offerings out there, I'm not seeing a brand name that inspires any confidence. Of course, with some of those prices, you could buy two! :)

Because having your only copy of your footage (after erasing the CF Cards) is NOT a good idea, especially if it's spinning media.

2 copies at least is an absolute must, if not more.

Can you use the 2.5 and I guess the CF if you wanted to for other files and other projects... Not just RED files. I guess Im asking if I could just use these for other uses, the work for all files not just RED stuff???
And JFTR, Bryan, you use the word I alot. Think about all the other folks that don't have the budgets for all the things you require. And that in time some of these products made by RED will be used in a lot of different ways and by different end users.
"I" don't know any Directors or Producers that have ever asked me to handle files, drives or any other media until "I" say ok here they are.

ARRI be aware... they use 800$ SxS cards with 16Gbyte max... stone age technology...

As opposed to what? Compact Flash, which has been around since 1994??

Different devices are tuned for different things. Compact Flash was designed for still cameras and is tuned for capacity. SxS was designed for motion cameras and is tuned for speed. Arri's decision was made primarily because current generation, off the shelf SxS can reliably handle the 330Mb data rate of ProRes4444 without problems. Unlike Red, Arri clearly doesn't want to be in the business of reselling memory when others are already in that business and can benefit from economies of scale in that area. That's a different business decision, not use of "stone age technology."

In my opinion, it seems like SSDs are the way of the future.

In my opinion, it seems like SSDs are the way of the future.

After having my 17" Unibody with the SSD, I will have not other way when possible always SSD vs any Spinning media, the difference is day and nigh!!

For recording Media such sas on cameras, there is just no comparison to be made, SSD or CF, nothing else.

There is a 1.8" REDMAG SSD card that will be released, that card will be used to record footage on camera via the 1.8" SSD Camera Module. The REDSTATION 1.8" Module to read that card will come out over the next few weeks.

The 2.5" REDMAG RED STATION module will accept normal 2.5" bare drives, so you can put a bare drive in ( Spinning or SSD ) and use it as an external hard drive, to offload cards to or for storage, etc.

this is crazy! makes me want to start buying stuff now! but i'm waiting for the S35 Scarlet to come out, so i'm guessing it would be a bit wiser to wait until its closer to that time, just in case you guys decide to do some package deal or something... *hint hint*:yesnod:

but seriously its going to be hard to wait until close to that time

You need a computer to use the RED STATION.. nothing happens automatically. When you load cards or drives into the station they show up as drives on your computer. You can use software to automate a backup workflow, but the station does not take the CF and dump it to a card all by itself.

Thank you for explaining the simplicity of it all. Beautiful.

At one point in time punch cards could have been the earliest SSD. Just you need a load of them to contain mounds of data. So soon you will need a room of SSDs to hold the larger amounts of data the 5k sensor will generate.

SSD is the future, Well actually it is here now and staying - no matter what the price point. Look at what the WOZ is doing in UTAH, he went to join a company doing just that - SSD Array farms (Oh all before "Dancing with the Stars)

There's also this, though I've yet to use one. http://www.nextodi.co.kr/en/product/ultra_en.html

I just ran into their booth on accident (ok I admit it was for the free popcorn). They have a new one coming out (NVS2500). That thing is sexy IO goodness on paper. It copies SD, CF, SxS, P2 and Memory Stick. The booth guy claimed 80MBs. It can copy to its internal HDD and an external USB or Firewire simultaneously. The guy said it also supports RED CF cards and their file structure officially.

It can also preview just about every type of footage known to man except for REDCode on its 2.5" screen. He said they couldn't load RED footage. This brought up an interesting problem. I presume they can't do anything with REDCode since there will never be an SDK for RandomKoreanManufacturerOS and r3ds are encrypted. So Redcode needs a small .jpg embedded in plaincode so that tools such as this can at least offer a shot preview without r3d sdk access.

It can also run on internal battery for the full 500GB of transfer along with hardware level bit checking as well as bad sector protection. I want an IO module to do that. I'm not being snarky, I'm making a real request. That would be spectacular and I'm sure RED could do it right.

All it takes is free popcorn? Man RED has been doing it wrong!

Remember, you can't spell Orville REDenbacher without RED :)

It's a very handy device. I've used it in the field with very good success. But, yeah, a way to preview Red files to make sure the data is in fact video will be a welcome addition.

The Red Station with USB3 and Esata 6gps would really rock in terms of offload speed,
If the base station had some form of battery power/tap then in time I'm sure it could be connected to an iphone/ ipad for offload. Imagine an an iphone/ ipad application that allows you to connect to the RED Station and offload much like the original P2 Genie with thumbnail previews and a folder/logging function with a database and search function.

But isn't the iPhone max 32G and the iPad 64G? What would be the point? It's the same size as the cards we'd be using.
