  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION MINI

Ordered.
But if any data transfer system needs a thunderbolt option its gotta be RED. Cut those offload times by half or more.

Thunderbolt won't improve the transfer speeds with the current-generation of REDMAGs. The bottleneck now is the interface on the REDMAG SSD itself. USB 3.0 will be way more than enough to completely use every bit of speed per second available. In fact, USB 3.0 is capable of transfer rates more than twice that supported by the REDMAG.

I wouldn't expect RED to release a Thunderbolt-equipped RED STATION until they come out with some faster REDMAGs. eSATA and USB 3.0 are perfectly capable of maxing out the current REDMAG transfer rates for now.

Remember that Thunderbolt supplies 10 Gbps of bandwidth per channel. That's four times faster than what the REDMAG is capable of transferring at.

USB to 5v power cable. My redstation has one. goes into the power port on the back of the red station

Thanks Brian. I was hoping for thunderbolt only because of ease using the newer generation MacBooks that only have thunderbolt. If I could just daisy chain an external TB drive with the reader, I'd be a happy camper.

Max data rate of the SSD's being lower than the thunderbolt bandwidth limit doesn't really matter. It's faster than FW, it daisy chains better, and it's on my Mac. USB 3.0 may be an option, but it certainly doesn't render thunderbolt unnecessary.

USB 3.0 is next ( End of this month )

So we should wait until the end of this month to buy the RED STATION MINI 2? Or this will get USB 3.0 through firmware update?

How would this unit use USB3? There's no way to make the esata or FW800 function as USB3 no?

My guess is its a separate unit.

Thats would be very impressive firmware :-)

I'm not exactly sure how to reply to your post, Ian...

Max data rate of the SSD's being lower than the thunderbolt bandwidth limit doesn't really matter.

For a person who specializes in data rates, that's like saying that playing back 480p footage on a 4K projector doesn't really matter.

1. Thunderbolt being faster than FireWire is an irrelevant point. If you were looking for the fastest transfer speeds currently available, you'd be using eSATA; not FireWire. 2. It does indeed support daisy-chaining devices. However, again, if you are looking for the faster transfer speeds, you would not be daisy-chaining devices. It depends on the data requirements per device, but daisy-chaining (while convenient) often reduces your transfer rates. 3. You are indeed correct; it is on your Mac. However, I don't see how that applies. :-)

USB 3.0 may be an option, but it certainly doesn't render thunderbolt unnecessary.

I never said USB 3.0 renders Thunderbolt unnecessary. I personally hope, just as everyone else does, that RED releases a Thunderbolt-equipped RED STATION. My point was that it will not increase transfer speeds like Paul suggested.

My guess is that USB 3.0 will be added to the full-size RED STATION (not the RED STATION MINI). It will not be added through a firmware update, though.

so your saying esata can already pull data from the SSD as fast as it can send it?

Yes. The REDMAG operates at between 180-280 MB/s. eSATA II is capable of transferring data at 285 MB/s.

I just was on the phone with my bomb squad rep 20 mins before this thread popped up and I bought 2 red stations. I wouldn't have bought this because I love using the Red base but it would have been cool if he could have known to tell me this was coming.

Jarred! thanks so much for this update snuck in here man! you rock!!

For thunderbolt whiners... (jk) seriously use this.

Sonnet Thunderbolt to Express 34 adapter to Sonnet Express Card 34 USB 3.0 adapter = nice interim solution until (Im sure its apple holding it up) Red can implement thunderbolt
if TB even becomes widely accepted...

equal THUNDERBOLT LOVE (for now)

USB will be a separate mini station... mostly for the PC guys.

Thunderbolt we continue to look into.. but there are a few issues... like no Tower support for Mac's.
