  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Sighted in Wellington NZ

...To each their own. I’ve chosen to spread my skill sets and genres with what technology enabled progressively over the years. I sincerely wish you the best with your career path. I’ve enjoyed mine…

Gibby,

AN APOLOGY

Man-o-man, how I feel frustrated by being misunderstood. This is the basic problem with posting on the net. I think that your achievements are tremendous and well earned. I hope that nothing I wrote could give you the opposite idea. But I do have to say this: When I was giving ‘advice’, I probably meant it more for people starting off, and possibly with less talent than you. Not that many people can develop multi-disciplinary talents like you and get to the place that you are at. Also, I guess I meant my comment more for those seeking to be directors. And lastly, my comments where completely within the context of a discussion I was having with Acehole and some others. It all started because of George Lucas. So please blame him.

THE AUTHOR THEORY

Also, when I said the thing about movies potentially being perceived as the artistic expression of a single person… I meant by the public (in fact, I did write ‘by the public’). I know that this notion is very far from the actual truth. But the public still says they want to see “Tarantino’s” latest flick Grindhouse… or they will say they loved “George Lucas’s” ‘Return of the Jedy’ (which he didn’t even direct). I’m just saying movies have that something extra to them that make them, in the public’s eyes, author-worthy.

ON THE TV INDUSTRY

Please understand, I am really, really, really not saying anything against the TV industry, nor Video vs. Film, nor your-method vs. mine… Really, I was just trying to defend the feature length Movie… what is also known as the motion picture… yes, even the commonly called ‘film’. I was trying to defend that it is the medium that would make the most of us the proudest to be involved in. At least I think so. For this very reason I think the Red team made the right choice in promoting the fact that their camera will first be used in a Movie.

THE WORD “FILM”

To tell the truth, I was hoping you would forgive me on using the term “film” interchangeably with “movie”. I think we all know that technically film is film and not digital, bla bla bla… but I sometimes fall prey to common usage.

*********

So anyway, I apologize if my words have caused you to think I was actually trying to argue against you. I wasn’t. Please keep in mind that you joined in a discussion halfway through and probably misread one of my posts (a very easy thing to do here).

Gibby,

Please keep in mind that not all of us mere mortals have your god-like skill set.

:)

I hope some of us have the good fortune to meet you in person at NAB and soak up the wisdom.

(I'm totally sincere and not teasing, BTW.)

LOL!...I'll also look forward to meeting everyone at NAB. I'm a simple guy like anyone else: I live on the coast, hang out in shorts, jeans, and T shirts, and do fun things like surf, mountainbike, camp, etc. - and constantly have a camera of some sort in my hand. At heart I'm a cinematographer, videographer, and photographer. There's nothing like the rush of getting some good images. Nobody I pass on the street even knows what I do for a living...and I prefer it that way.

I don't have all the answers, but I have been around the industry for a long time and learned a little. I'm not a workaholic. I believe in working smart rather than working long. I've just been really fortunate to have had some very cool opportunities to work and learn come my way over the years. I'm not posessive with that knowledge. I really like helping others, because so many others helped me over the years.

C-ya at NAB!!

TheThe,

To use a phrase I picked up on my travels to Australia "No worries mate!" I understand your position much better now. Discussions like we've had are real important for the vitality and progression of the RED User community. We're a worldwide family of RED adopters from diverse backgrounds. It's through everyone presenting their insight and ideas that we progress individually and as a community. This is exactly how an online tech forum should function.

Cheers!

I am so glad you don't hate me.
I agree that the posts here are addictive and well worth it. I have learned so much since Red announced their plans and since Jarred started this forum. In the meantime, for all those who joined us late, I invite you to blame everything on George Lucas. :)

After all he is the one abandoning feature films:

"Lucasfilm is getting out of the movie biz"

His technological contributions notwithstanding, Lucas should have gotten out of the movie biz 25 years ago.

<disgruntled old school SW fan>

EDIT: Maybe I'm being too harsh on George. Nah...
Absolutely! If Episode 1 had been the first SW film released, that would have been "all she wrote."

To get back on subject, sort of - kind of like if King Kong had been released before Lord of the Rings :)

Better get rid of "Jar-Red" before someone at Sony sees it.

High level film director/production career? Nobody will “film” anything with RED One. They will “record” or “shoot”, but not “film”. If a project is acquired digitally, edited digitally, mastered digitally, and delivered/marketed digitally, and is projected digitally in a theater, is it a “film”? No…it’s a movie, or a digital cinema piece. If it is produced digitally all the way through, with a film-out at the end, is it a “film”? No…it’s a movie or a digital cinema piece.
Just a technicality of symantics, Gibbs. :-) I think many people use the word "film" interchangably with "movie" regardless of the point of origin, and honestly, I don't think there's much wrong with that. Language evolves.

I agree with you, however, that the future of cinema is clearly in the digital domain. In many cases, it already is.

Haakon: LOL...yeah, I've wrestled with evolving terminology just like everyone else. Straddling both the film and video worlds like I do, I run with both crowds. Seems to me it's mostly those with a heavy film background that naturally just call digital cinema "filming". Those from a TV/video background have been used to saying "taping" for a long time, but obviously can't apply that to RED One. In my experience they're the ones more likely to say "shoot" or "record" when it comes to RED One. I'll undoubtedly say "shoot" or "record" when referring to the process with RED One. It also avoids confusion with tech-challenged clients who get confused by the term "film" and assume that I'll be shooting their project in 35mm or S16mm.

Gavin: No doubt...to each their own on that. I'll say "film" movies if I'm using the film medium. If it's digital cinema, I'll use "shoot" or "record". "Hey baby, lets check out the cinema tonight" is fine for me and my wife. She's also a longtime professional Production Coordinator in the motion media industry and a darn good camerawoman/DSLR photographer in her own right - she knows the difference in the technology for each medium. My CMOS DSLR and my CMOS RED One use nearly identical technology, and the DSLR shoots at 5 fps, and RED One can also shoot at 5 fps, and I'll use Flash in both. I "shoot" with the DSLR, so it makes sense to me that I also "shoot" with RED One.

No matter what someone chooses to call it - bring on RED One! Just a few more weeks to NAB now...somewhere around NAB time I hope to have my first RED camera (#8). When I do, you can rest assured that me and others (to be named) will be putting it through some grueling tests and sharing the results here on RED User and a few other places.

Well, as a rank amateur, I thought I'd put my two bits on the off-topic table.

On the feature versus television scale, I'll slide over to television because I'm a story teller. I don't have anything against features but at only a couple hours they are short stories... very short stories. Television with a hundred or more hours gives you a series of novels - and most of the stories that I want to tell are bigger than a feature film can hold.

I do have a few short stories in me, and if that is how I need to get into the business I will create them with passion and great affection... then hopefully move up to television!

Clint steps back from the computer and climbs into his Nomex suit.

Nobody should be roasting you for that choice Clint. You should follow your instincts and do stuff that you're really interested in. That way your work will be much better. No matter what you decide to do, you can rest assured there will be somebody to tell you that you're wrong. As long as you know your goals, just stick with them. Others can do their own thing...

Call me up when you do; I'm just right down the road and would love to help out. I'm in the relatively first batch of cameras too (#80) and it is definitely going to get its fair share of use by me! :-)
