Hi all,

so I pre-ordered the Ursa Mini 4.6k a long time ago. Since it keep getting pushed back, this forum got me thinking about getting a Scarlet-X (or perhaps Dragon) instead of the Ursa Mini 4.6k.

What do you think about this? What's your opinion about getting a Scarlet these days. How relevant is it?

was in same place, moved to scarlet w

Same here.

Scarlet-W isn't in the same price bracket, but I don't trust BMD anymore. Worst PR imaginable, no respect for their customers, and poor quality control with their sensors. Meanwhile you have total transparency with Red, an accessible and passionate CEO who rambles on the forum just like the rest of us, and sensors that are tried tested and true.

It wasn't much of much of a decision at all for me.

Grab the Red and dive in brotha...don't second guess the best!

Not sure if investing in a scarlet-X right now would be a smart move with the Raven and scarlet-w being released in the weeks/month. I too originally was looking into second hand market for epics, but then made the decision it was better to head into Raven, then ultimately scarlet-w once it was announced.

Raven is a better investment at this point than a scarlet-X in my opinion, but if budget is the biggest factor for you, i'd still recommend to wait a couple of months. The second hand market for Scarlet's and epics is going to give you a bunch more options and probably some killer price breaks.

To me a BM 4.6 was a deal of year, but still I did not have a high frame rates with BM, in RED I’m not just went to high frame rate and DR but and to high league, and the most important is the possibility to upgrade to higher level, we all think of making grow, so the camcorder, with RED it will cost less and you have an experience with red, its important to drag all your customers with you , so Scarlet W or Raven is unique deal, if have cash for BM invest in Raven or Scarlet W, it is a big step that will make you make more moves towards your success

Scarlet-D they knock off $2000 from future S-W purchase. Just get the Scarlet-W.

Just take out a business loan for the Scarlet-W. That's what I'm doing. I have about $10K saved, but going to be buying a bunch of other stuff, so loan it is. Smile now, cry later.

Good move to Red IMO. You will definitely get more work with a Red over a BMC, so that would help your bills a bit. They will probably announce the Ursa Mini Mark II at NAB 2016, without having shipped the first version.

Yeah. But the Scarlet-D might get a lot cheaper, on the second hand market. I might be able to get a complete package for €8000 in a couple of months... Don't you guys think?

Honestly, the decision depends on your shooting style.

Can you handle having to take the time to manually black shade on the Scarlet-X or Scarlet-D, because if you need to get up and running quickly, Scarlet-W or BM 4.5K would be the better option.

I do have the time to do this manually, most of the times that is :)

There is no doubt about that. There will be many non upgradable scarlet-D on the second hand market after people will use their ownership option to get the new one. Just ask for a lower price then. Anyway we don't know how long this discount offer will last, probably not so long.

True! THe thing is: i've worked with an Epic Dragon at my internships for about 1.5 years. I've grown to know the system. Also used a Scarlet-X a couple of times...

There is so little known about the 4.6K BM yet... Is it really 15 stops DR or is the Scarlet-X still better... I know the Dragon probably is, but it's a little more expensive.

At this point, if you're *really* strapped for cash, a hobbyist or an occasional shooter, I'd say yeah, BMD4.6k is the way to go - if it ever comes out. But as a pro... at this level of investment and technology, you really should step back and look at the company building your camera, and serving you as a customer - not just the price. You could end up paying more in headaches, disappointment, and frustration. I have to echo this statement: "I don't trust BMD anymore". Their lack of communication with their customer base in this age of social media is just bizarre. Then by contrast you have RED, whose CEO and his team are virtually sitting next to you by way of this forum - truly amazing.

I think with RED you have far less potential to regret your purchase.
