  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Scarlet X #316 "Skully"

I would personally take a look at the Omni-Tracker. You want something with a wider wheel base that won't tip with longer lenses when balanced. I would recommend finding one with "marks" on it so you can have consistent angles on your moves in case you need to match a move later on or repeat exact moments.

The best I used was some custom thing with a motor from a guy in Burbank, but that was more for motion control work and it had a motorized head as well. We used it for some slow motion "fruit dropping", which was really messy.

Hey Phil -

Thanks for all your info you're providing, it is truly appreciated. I just picked up a BT Scarlet and coming from a stills background, I have never been more excited to enter the RED game.

Quick question. Have you had any problems switching out your GlobalMediaPro V-mounts while the power is on using redvolts in the sidehandle? One of the reasons why I decided to go with some redvolts and GMP batts was so that I wouldn't have to power down when switching batteries. After going through the Scarlet manual though, they say it is not good for the camera to dismount batteries while powered on. Any comment on this?

Thanks!

Jeremy

I do it all the time with my Antons and redvolts.

Phil,

What grips and front support rod are you using to build this 'tripod' system?

Looking for a similar setup.

Ah. That was my original DIY baseplate/rod support. Basically a bored out baseplate with a small 15mm clamp. I made that because I got my Scarlet a bit earlier than I anticipated and wanted to shoot asap. Really not the most stable thing, but it works for super compact and lightweight setups.

If you kept clicking further you would have found this image showing what it is:

The grips were some off brand thing I got from ebay I think. I don't actually like them as they have a lot of play. I much prefer Red metal rosettes and handles or something similar. I like my rigs to feel like one piece without much play.

I built that entire rig essentially out of spare parts that were all bolted and drilled out. I don't use it anymore even though I like the idea of the "tripod" concept to rest the rig. I never liked that shoulder pad. While the cine arm with the monitor was in generally good spot, I didn't like that I couldn't quickly release it and break it down. It would also get in the way of the follow focus on the smart side, so I now top mount it with a rod clamp.

Thanks for the quick response! I have a decent amount of Zacuto parts laying around - trying to figure out how to piece it together and make a solid compact rig. My main question was about the front T-bar and grips.

Thanks for the heads up on the play in those grips.

I think that the manual is referring to a situation where one would switch the only battery source powering the camera, while it is on...when you have a Vmount or Anton battery, as well as a Redvolt, the Redvolt powers the camera while you switch the bigger battery source. If you only have one battery source, don't hot swap that battery while powered on. That being said, I have read about and encountered a Scarlet that failed to switch power to the Redvolt as the larger battery source was being swapped.

Thanks Bob and Steven!
That makes me feel better. Steven, has the power switch fail ever happened to you? Is there a setting I need to enable to insure this does not happen?

It hasn't happened on my Scarlet, but I was working with another Scarlet on a show, where it did happen. There is no setting that I know of to control this...

Just saying hi. Last 3 months of shooting yields a great deal of work work I can't show for about a year, but here's some random stills from things.
Really excited to be seeing "The World After" tomorrow in 4K at the Downtown Independent Theater.

Pfizer.

You need to teach a post processing class! I love your work man!

Thank you Kyle. I have a presentation on Color Theory and Composition that I've presented around the globe for several years at workshops and is also part of my curriculum Gnomon. There is a rumor that I may be doing a guest presentation during Reducation X at some point. Still working on scheduling.

The presentation itself explores some of the psychological components behind what we as humans are visually attracted to while covering the fundamentals and looking at more "intangible" theories. It's real fun. I talk about and show examples using different software applications to solve different creative color problems. A lot of what has been developed with the presentation comes from notes, experiments, and conversations collected from filmmakers, artists, and photographers during the last 15 years. It's one of my favorite topics to talk about with creative individuals.

I'll be presenting the talk sometime in February in Los Angeles and in the U.K. in May of 2013. If we're all still here that is.

Great work Phil, I have a sub to Gnomon looking forward to seeing your workshops.

Im a big fan of Alex for years since Maya v1 on Unix ;)

Cheers Eric. Alex is a great guy.

Phil did you know you where mentioned in this article? http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/11/4k-cameras-whats-the-state-of-the-art/
Thanks for all the great info in this thread!

I did not actually! Thank you Dimitri. That little Data Sheet certainly is popular. I'll be updating it again before the year is out!

Phil do you have all your own lenses? What do you primarily use?

Phil do you have all your own lenses? What do you primarily use?

This is what I own:
phfx_SkullyWithLenses.jpg

That's all full frame 35mm still glass that have either been Cine Modded or "adapted" for use with a follow focus.

Coverage in zooms 11-200mm
Coverage in primes 14-600mm
A couple fisheyes and my Iscorama 50mm 1.5x f/2.8 Anamorphic.

I rent PL/PV glass. This year I've also shot with PV, UP, MP, RPP/RPZ and a 40mm Leica Summilux-C all on Epic.

What do I use primarily? I would say what's on my Scarlet most of the time are: Canon 24mm f/1.4L, 50mm f/1.2L, 85mm f/1.2L, 100mm f/2.8 Macro, 135mm f/2L, and 200mm f/2.8L, the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, and Leica 60mm f/2.8 Elmarit R (Duclos Cine Mod).
Although on Friday I used the 24-70mm f/2.8L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS all day, it was raining in Los Angeles.
I've noticed I use the 35mm f/1.4L on the Epic more than the Scaret likely due to the 4K versus 5K crop factor and my personal style of shooting.

I'm waiting until next year to buy more glass. Too many unknowns at the moment and I have a healthy set that covers large sensors. I prefer fast primes personally. I shoot often at f/2, like that entire Pfizer spot. I came very close to purchasing a set of Red Pro Primes earlier this year, but the seller decided to keep them.
