So I've been wondering, with the announcement of the RED Raven today, how does everyone feel about the original RED Epic. Is it still worth getting, or do you feel the Raven has replaced the original Epic. I'm only asking because I'm planning on doing the upgrade for my scarlet to the epic. Even though the Raven has 120fps at 4k, and its the dragon sensor, I still think the Epic has its value. It has 5k at 120fps with out cropping, and several other features. I'm just curious what people think of the Epic, and if upgrading is worth it.

The dynamic range is really terrible when you compare it to EPIC Dragon, Scarlet Dragon or Raven.

Which can be seen here:

I personally would get the Raven over the EPIC MX. The Raven just has so much thats better.

I'm not sure if MX upgrades are avail anymore.

The Scarlet to Epic upgrade still shows up in the store, and another REDUsers member contacted there RED rep, and they also confirmed it will be available for all scarlet owners for quite awhile.

Wow... wasn't aware that upgrade option is still available... $9500.00 is steep. I don't think an EPIC MX is worth it now.

True - for that price, you could get a new RAVEN package. And have two cameras.

I guess my issue with the Raven is, I cant change the mounts, and the crop sensor. The high speed is great, but I like having those options, but I also want a next level camera. I could sell my Scarlet package for probably $8,000, and pay off the difference for the Raven. Will the Raven have support for RED Bricks, I don't see any modules for that yet.

DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander... basically this with an integrated V-Lock for bricks on the back.

yes, auto blackshades n prores n light weight...but best of all auto blackshades!

Was trying to figure that out since they announced it. So you think selling the Scarlet, and paying the difference for the Raven Base I/O Package would be a better option then the Epic MX?

Yes most definitely... for the greater dynamic range, Apple ProRes+RAW, WiFi, newer body, roughly same framerates as EPIC MX. Shooting 4k on the EPIC MX is probably the same FOV as on the Raven. (1.25x crop factor on EPIC MX is roughly the same as Raven for 4K)

I still have to figure out the advantages of auto black shade calibration on Raven/Weapon... I would love to test in which situations the cam will need to be manually calibrated... such as great ambient changes, high iso, etc.

I wonder if theres any plans for a upgrade from the Scarlet MX to the Raven, not sure how they would go about it, but it would make sense if they wanted to completely end the Scarlet MX package and move everything over to the Dragon, and DSMC2 body. It would also make my life easier, since I wouldn't have to go threw the whole process of selling my Scarlet ha ha.

What do you think is going to happen in the coming months at RED? Just curious what your predictions would be.

I think prices will drop on some models or at least be some good bargains in the used market, But that's my uneducated guess

Most people are so quick to pre-order the Raven, Yeh fair enough if you have to be the first to own it.. But I'd rather wait it out. 6 months is a long time away.. I've never rushed a purchase and so far I've scored a very cheap used Scarlet MX and a BT Red Dragon, plus a heap of cheap used accessories!

Plus Jarred just said this....

Epic has a path forward into the new form factor, Scarlet will see a path forward to the new form factor, then there will be a new sensor in a few years, and then a few years after that the cycle repeats all over again.

"Epic has a path forward into the new form factor, Scarlet will see a path forward to the new form factor". These words from jarred tell a lot. I guess next year there will be raven 4K, Scarlet 5K in a weapon body, Weapon 6K and Weapon 8K. MX is probably over now. Scarlet Dragon owners should wait. But Epic Dragon ones too. If the future scarlet has 5K with HFR and low compression I'm sure many will be more interested into that one than in the weapon. And that will save them money. A weaponized scarlet could be the most successfull Red camera ever I think.

Owen , I think that statement refers to Dragon variants not MX. As the upgrades from MX to dragon have now expired ?

P.S to the OP I would sell your Scarlet on the 2nd hand market. As Andrae has suggested upgrading to MX IMO would be a lost cause @ $9.5k ........better still find a 2nd hand Dragon somewhere for not that much more ( Brain only) .
