  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

red Scarlet dragon price and availability

Glad to help, although couldn't say what would happen if someone bought an Epic-MX straight out and tried to upgrade before 90 days. I would definitely recommend that questions like this go straight to your BS Rep, but 90 days before any upgrade was the term I agreed to.
interesting...the 90 day rule must be fairly new...i did the scarlet-epic switch right away after that option was announced and signed up for the epic- dragon upgrade the day after i received the epic.....but i guess at that point they knew that i wouldn't get that upgrade within 90 days anyway....
what that does tell me is that red are actually planning on having all epicM and epicX upgraded in the next 2-3 months....i wasn't sure how long it would actually take and was hoping to get dragon before the end of the year....now i guess september/october is a better timeframe!

Wow, I completely misunderstood it the first time. (I initially understood that one had to order inside of the first 90 days -- I got it now, you wrote it pretty clearly, but my mind was reading it in a weird way...)

Anyway, I guess the waiting line is certainly long, as I believe that some people will update not only one...

:o)

Haha, no worries :) My brain hurts when I consider all the different upgrade options and variables. Bottom line is anyone wondering how the upgrade works should contact their Rep and look closely at the Terms of Sale, all the info is in there about what happens when you trade.

The Scarlet upgrade is still being worked out. It is extremely complicated. With all the board changes we had to make to get Dragon into EPIC, we have to translate those changes to Scarlet. Give us some time...

Jim

This is very encouraging. My SCARLET is used almost exclusively to shoot low budget indies, and I'm looking forward to the straight-to-Dragon upgrade. glad to hear it is still a work in progress. I don't want or need to trade up to an EPIC, since I have one. SCARLET lets me help out a lot of small indie filmmakers who can't afford the EPIC.

I just don't think it's a smart move to pull the trigger on a $9500 sensor upgrade if there's a chance that, six months later, they offer an entire Scarlet-D brain BNIB for something like $12500... MX maybe old news compared to Dragon, but it's not exactly pure shit (it'll work just fine in those 6 months, and then I'd have A&B cams).

This kind of fear and purchase hold-back is what Red unfortunately has earned themselves after the prices slashes last year. That was a mess, and those who complained were accused of being elitist and insufficiently supportive of the little guy - as though losing thousands of equity in my business I shouldn't care about because some stranger can now shoot his indy film on a better camera for less money. I will spring for an upgrade, but we were going to buy a second Epic, and decided against it after that.

I know about 50 people who are ready to pull the trigger on a Scarlet-D the moment it's announced. Including myself.

I would buy one. If it was included in the education discount I would be sooo happy!

Not to start this all up again but.... you didn't buy equity, you bought a camera. If you wanted to invest, you should've bought stocks. Cameras are for making pictures.

Jim thanks for bearing with us Scarlet users! Love being in the RED eco system! Can't wait for the upgrade!

I think it's very important, crucial even, that the kiddies understand this, so I will state it one last time.

No, a rented camera can make the exact same pictures, in exactly the same way, as an owned camera.

You do simple math, like (and these are just random numbers to illustrate a point) say I would have rented Camera Brand X from others for $500 a day, over 10 days of actual shooting over a 3 month period, so that's $5000, over three months. During that time the camera lost X value so either I am ahead or behind financially, over if I would have waited those months and rented, DOING THE EXACT SAME SHOOTS WITH THE EXACT SAME CAMERA MODEL, and only bought at some later date.

That's all. Either way, owning or renting, you are shooting the exact same stuff with the exact same gear for the exact same clients/projects. It makes no difference to what you shoot or the quality. Just none. One way ends up costing more than the other, depending on how many times a month you shoot and/or how many times you can also rent the camera to others, and how fast it goes down in price over that period. That's all. You buy instead of renting as a purely $$$ consideration, renting to yourself as part of submissions to clients, or to others, or just saving whatever the rental fee would be on a personal project.

As an investment it's often related to a cinematography career, sure, but only because DPs then become their most loyal and frequent rental customer.

The difference is obviously only a $$ matter. It has nothing do with talent/career/passion, or anything of the sort, because you can apply the same talent/passion/whatever with a rented camera.

The camera from the rental company has the exact same capabilities as one of the same model you would buy. Why is that so hard for some people to grasp? The images will look exactly the same.

If you buy gear out of "passion" (rather than renting) you are headed toward bankruptcy, and not giving your career any perceptible advantage whatsoever.

Even if you make the terrible mistake of "throwing in" the camera for free with yourself as a DP, you can still count the shooting days over any given period, and compare them to the price drop over that same period, and examine whether you would have been ahead financially renting the camera from other people for those days, over that period, and taking the rental cost out of your salary, or not. You can count the shooting days and calculate the relative costs $$ in this way even if you are only doing personal projects for your own amusement - you can rent for those too. It might cost less, or more, but you need to do that math unless money means nothing to you.

Rare and unrentable gear, like home-made filters, can give you an advantage, because you could not rent it, and no one, or almost no one, has access to its unique capabilities. A popular camera like the Red Epic does not fall into that category, unless you live somewhere remote where no one is renting them. Most of us do not live in such places.

It's simple. It's easy. It's not really subjective.

Proof is many top DPs own zero cameras. I myself owned no gear at all for the majority of my career.

Being foolish with how you handle your money just makes you foolish, not "more artistic".

Which Scarlets are eligible for upgrade to Scarlet Dragon? Are all of them eligible or not? That has me confused, because when I go to the ordering site it says to sign in to see if you're eligible. I don't own the Scarlet yet, but I was wondering if I'd be able to buy the Scarlet and then buy the upgrade or if there is more to it? I'm just wondering how this will work for people who don't currently own a Scarlet, but wants a Scarlet Dragon?

Thanks! Sorry if this has been covered, but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer.

Yes any Scarlet is elegible to upgrade. They will do an evaluation to make sure its in good condition. If its all good, they perform the upgrade.

Thanks, Bob! I appreciate it. BTW, if I'm planning on ordering a Scarlet that I intend to upgrade to the Dragon would I still have to have the Scarlet sent to my home and then send it back in for the upgrade or is there a way I can drop the needless shipping to me and me shipping it back and instead just have them upgrade it before it ships out....is this possible? It would be nice to reduce the number of times the camera is in transit is all. lol.

If that's your plan, I would just buy a used scarlet and then buy the upgrade to Scarlet Dragon.

But still a valid point, it would be crazy to buy both a new scarlet and the upgrade online just to have it shipped to you and shipped right back for the upgrade. No way red would do this.

This scenario isn't currently possible anyway since Scarlet Dragons aren't shipping and probably won't be for awhile. Yet, if you buy now and put in for the upgrade, you can use the camera while you wait; and you'll be in the queue. What you stand to gain is time; with the camera now, and getting your Scarlet Dragon sooner.

My question is, "Will he be able to actually edit the files he shoots with his Scarlet Dragon when he gets it and if so, with what software?"

It doesn't sound like Adobe CS6 can handle the Dragon color science. Possibly this is part of the hold up? I have no doubt that they'll make something available on CC for a monthly charge eventually. Wondering if RED is going to move into the editing/software side of things with an expansion of RED Cine X? Now wouldn't that be something?

I doubt the Dragon will be released with no software support. At a minimum, you should be able to process your Dragon footage in a new version of RCX and then output to a size the NLEs can handle. And, I am sure the NLEs will be updated quickly. It's not like no one knows who RED is.

Terry is correct here. Red's not going to release any camera that doesn't work with a version of Redcine-X Pro. 3rd party support will be pretty much up to each individual company's programmers to implement as fast as possible.

The good news here is at this point it's nobody's first rodeo. We'll likely see Dragon color support implemented fairly quickly this time around.

Hi!

Sorry if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything on it but what's the diagonal size of the sensor inside Scarlet Dragon?
Its specs says 28.9mm for 5K full but isn't it the same sensor as the Epic Dragons 34.5mm 6K but flagged? What I'm really asking is if I connect a Scarlet Dragon to a HD-SDI-recorder and enable look around, will I get the full 34.5mm coverage?

Thanks!
/V

The ability to see the Look around feature in the Scarlet through the SDI/HDMI ports was a nice surprise that showed up many firmware versions later. My guess is that the Scarlet Dragon could do this but you never know until you get it.
