  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey Guys,

Last week I received my Scralet.
After a couple of shooting days, aftermovie, short film and well lit commercial, the noise on the image is nothing I have seen before.

It is so chucnky and "In your face"

I blackshaded a couple of times, with the bodycap on in a dark room on 55 degrees.

Is there a better temp to keep the camera running on? Or am I forgetting something to do in Cine X or DaVinci?

I didn't get it from the fist look at the thread title "RED Scarlet #04353 Noisy", thought it was a name for the cam... So what did you expect after naming it like that?:lol:
Just kidding, and hope there is no technical issues with your camera whatsoever! I believe Gunleik will give you deeper explanation, just my five cents to keep you going until he's back:

Seems underexposed a bit. Did you use any filters?

I've been explaining exposure with the MX to a fellow some time ago. It was mostly about nature shots, so I just pointed R1MX to a window and grabbed a few comparison frames for him.
It might be a quick reference for you as well, no big difference for Scarlet:

Blackshading is a good and necessary procedure but this is not the case here, I guess. But I admit - it's a bit "in your face" on your shot.

PS Be careful with polarisation filters. Though it might benefit tremendously for a nature shots, but you should always check you exposure when camera, filter or light move.
PS2 I do not use REDCine-X or Resolve for noise issues - IMHO NeatVideo does it better and faster.

There will be no point to trim the file to 1 frame in this particular case. You should see it in motion to judge noise issues...
I got the file in less than a minute, so check your ISP!

thanks for the reply. No filters were used. Exposed between the goalposts. No noise in the "black" (left) bar.

Downloaded your files and even the underexposed file looks better than mine.

The scarlet also freezes sometimes when powering op. Shows a white screen and does noting.
Need to take out all batteries wait a minute and power her back on again.

Sometimes this doesnt work either and i need to switch resolution from 4k to 1k to 5 and then the screen comes up normal.

I'm really not hoping its a hardware failure.

It came in with the latest firmware.

Ouch! This sheds some light on what's happening. Try setting up a test shot, grab it, reload the firmware/blackshade and grab another one. If you do not notice significant changes in the noise floor and distribution and your white screen problem persists - maybe it's a good time to check it with RED Tech...
 
By the way, Jaimy, what was the T-stop? Was it pretty high?

I used to have a few issues with flares hitting the lens front on a high key scene. I avoid shooting without matte box since that, if it's possible. Don't get confused with my avatar :) Those flares were covering the whole frame evenly, so it was impossible to see it on set. And I didn't manage to put matte box on a steadicam. Back in postproduction I discovered the noise on that shots being risen 2-3 times comparing to the ones with a matte box from the same scene.
 
I had the same problem with my Scarlet, did you scratch or damage your low light sensor/filter (i think that is the right term but people on the board will know what I am talking about). Cause right when I got my Scarlet and messed with it and some how touched the sensor and cleaned it with a micro fiber. When I traded it in for my Epic they had to replace the low light sensor/filter

You are referring to the OLPF, which stands for Optical Low Pass Filter. Nothing to do with low light or anything.

I'm not home at the moment and can't look at the file. I agree with those who have recommended re-installing the firmware and applying a new black shade.

Also, let us know what lens you are using. Typically with Scarlet you'll want to expose for a ISO 320-800 rating, although there's a bit more room to play in there.

the shot was done on a CP2 eos mount carl Seizz on f8

installing new firmware now.
 
Did a new firmware install and it looks so much better already!

Will test it in a well lit enviorment later.

I downloaded your clip and compared to some of my own. This is definately compression noise because the small branches, grass and trees in background which eats up available bandwidth and i always see the same in my shots when there is a lot of detail shot with a wide and sharp lens. You are getting exactly the same as me here. While the difference between viewing in full resolution and 1/2 on a 1080 display usually is unnoticeable, in this case it makes a lot of difference on the noise to view in full res no matter the resolution of your monitor
