  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket

When can we pre-order and get in line? Or will there be enough quantities that it won't be an issue in two months?

RED Rocket

I think the next version of Final Cut Studio with Snow Leopard will unleash many things , CUDA , 64bit Final Cut/Color , Combine REDCODE Acceleration with RED Rocket to Grade Directly in Color on a 64bit machine using CUDA for rendering Effects/Transitions. Yeah I think in 6 months time the RED World is going to look very very very different and all the bitching should cease at least until they announce more products we will have to wait for :)

I think that CUDA is going to fade out now that OpenCL has been developed. Nobody will want to develop for a tech that only supports one brand of card (CUDA only works on Nvidia afaik) now that an open standard has been announced...

Hans, thank you for laying it out like that, it really helped.

So it is confirmed that it will be a card and not a box (though we'll see if we can put it in one) and that it will take up two slots.

That makes me think you might be able to SLI them... unless they put out a bigger and faster version for over 5k.

Two months! How fast will these roll out?

Will send to Color work with this card - and how?

What about realtime 1080P fully debayered and resized from 4K? Sending 4K is interesting but sending 1080P to HD-SDI, DVI, dpx, a blu-ray file or h.264 would be really beneficial.

I'm not really worried about realtime 4K playback. Am I missing something obvious here?

Multi-Red Rocket Capable?

Multi-Red Rocket Capable?

Will this work with more RED Rockets?

actually this card is what I was hoping red ray turned out to be , not just a player but a processing box we could attach to the mac/pc

Just a thought I don't know if this can be done but somebody posted a suggestion that the Rocket be an external box capable of connecting to a PCIe slot and also to a laptop.
Excuse me if this is not possible but it seems like a good idea.
The only reason I say this is if the card takes up two slots it doesn't leave a lot of room left for say a Kona 3 card or external raid storage or stock/other graphics card in a Pro Mac.
Now maybe you wont need the Kona 3 and stock graphics card with the Rocket I hope not, but this is just an observation. I'm sure the RED team have thought of this, just wondering if this is possible?

Also if the Rocket does in some way replace the Kona 3 can you please look at the ability to output to HD CAM/D5 Decks. I say this as most HD TV output is still broadcast this way and seems like an important consideration in making RED a first choice camera for broadcast shows. Integration with current workflows is still very important in TV Land, and maybe even more important that in digital cinema.

One last point I am not sure if this is currently possible but if the Rocket could also handle conversion of footage in all resolutions from 25fps to 24fps and visa versa then the any format recorded on a RED camera could easily be broadcast throughout the world.
Just my 2 cents.

For what its worth, I'd like a cheaper version that simply performs the IWT/debayer internally to speed up general processing.

Quad DVI etc would be optional for me, depending on the price.

Cineform = EOL

I'm curious what warranted that type of comment . . . David Newman and Taylor have been played very active roles in supporting the RED community, especially on the PC.

There's also a lot more to CineForm than simply supporting RAW formats for real-time playback at high-resolutions ... plus, because CineForm is software-driven, and will be accelerated with each new processor tic-tock cycle produced by Intel, they will have the ability to adapt to newer high-speed 5K+ formats that apparently the first revisions of RED Rocket have capped at 25fps (4K@30fps).

While RED Rocket will be a truly revolutionary hardware acceleration product that will transform the RED post-production pipeline, I think history has shown that hardware accelerated products have never meant the end to software-only solutions ... rather it's been more like a cat-and-mouse game as software vendors leverage Moore's law to catch up and then surpass existing hardware-based solutions while customers of hardware-only solutions amortize the higher costs associated with that technology sector. The advantages of Moore's law are then reversed as a new hardware-accelerated product comes to market, repeating this software-hardware solution leapfrogging scenario all over again.

Thanks,

Jason

RedCine = Free
PC = ~$2,000
REDRocket Card = ~$5,000
Real time 4K Output to client's preferred format = Priceless!

Can't wait.... :)

What Gives

What Gives

Last night and the night before I stayed up till the 'Midnight-Hour' (California time), but nothing that I could perceive as a substantial announcement was announced.

Yes there was the ‘Red Rocket’, and the prices on the ‘Red Pro Prime’ lenses.

But, I’m still waiting, for something, anything, a picture, I guess the only thing I can do is just wait some more. I supposed whenever the time is right, that’s when we’ll hear!

Good Luck, you guys know what you’re doing. Humberto Rivera

And just what information were you hoping would be announced?

RED RAY and RED ROCKET are pretty big. No news announced as far as cameras, but there were prototypes on display and some new things visible if you look. I've only seen a handful of pictures as I wasn't there.

For me, RED RAY wasn't really "news". It was more of a "holy shit, it's really going to work!" sort of moment. Last year at NAB Jim told me (and probably a thousand other people) that RED RAY would be able to play 4K from standard DVD-R media at typical DVD data rates. That's < 10Mbps.. Here we are. One year later and they are showing 4K footage playing from a 10Mbps stream. It's going to be huge.

Real time 4K Output to client's preferred format = Priceless!

Who's preferred output is 4K? A 4K monitor? A 4K projector? A Sony HDCAM SR 4K deck for broadcast on 4K TV? I've never heard of anybody anywhere outside of Spiderman III asking for 4K.

I surely don't need 4k to edit a piece. I just need realtime 1K playback from R3D on the timeline to edit. I need a nice clean 2K or 1080P in Apple Color.

Maybe I'm missing the obvious and this box has Ninja scaling capabilities not yet mentioned, offers lightning fast file saving of R3D to popular codecs like h.264... if so I'm buying. If not, I'm going to need to see just how the heck this thing improves my life. I'd rather have a box that gives me native 1K R3D editing for a fraction of the price.

Oh wait Matrox MXO2 -
"Edit, monitor, and output in post Back in the post suite, you can use Matrox MXO2 to work with 1K and 2K RED timelines in either 16:9 or 2:1 aspect ratio, and output to SD, 720, or 1080 via MXO2‘s realtime 10-bit hardware scaling feature. This lets you use HD or SD monitoring equipment you may already own, or you can get great results using inexpensive HDMI monitors. Matrox MXO2 lets you adjust and control an HDMI monitor exactly like you would a broadcast monitor. Controls for hue, chroma, contrast, brightness, and blue-only are provided. This unique control gives you accurate color representation so that you can use your HDMI monitor with Apple Color to begin the first phase of color correction. Matrox MXO2 also makes it easy for you to output EDLs, dailies, and rushes in record time...

Matrox MXO2 is also available with Matrox MAX technology for faster than realtime high definition H.264 file creation. "

Give me that with a full debayer from 4k otherwise I totally don't understand this product 'cause you can't do anything with 4K right now.
