  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Rocket went down now red wants 3k

For all we know $3,000 is what it costs Red to buy them so lets give them the benefit of the doubt.

What I know about Red is they are the opposite of greedy.

The mere suggestion that they are profiteering off the misery of their Devoted customers needs to be shutdown.

They just sold me a $43,000 camera package for $28,000 AFTER giving me a 100% rebate on a 3 year old camera that was already too cheap!

These are not the actions of a heartless and greedy corporation.

If heaven forbid my Rocket dies tomorrow, and it's $3k to replace, I'll cry a little for sure, but what I will not do is say they are being unfair to me and they should pay for it.

No where have I said Red are greedy.
How do you know it cost's Red $3000 for the Rocket?

Come on dude, dial back on the fan based remarks. This is business and while Red do make "cool" tools they are just just that tools... and need to work under a professional environment and deliver a return on investment.

If cards are dying due to a firmware update then that is rather worrying and if the only fix is to purchase a new one for $3k then that is extremely concerning.

Not all Rocket owners have cameras. Many post providers invest in Rockets to effectively deal with R3D's. Unlike you they can't take comfort in having saved x thousands on a stage 3 upgrade. Just saying...

Not saying I used the logic to balance out the costs in my situation. I was using the policy as support for the idea that RED don't try to grab money from their customers, so if it's $3,000 there must be a reason.

Silicon evolves fast; it's moved on considerably since the Rocket first appeared. I've said before, and don't apologise for saying again, that it should be possible to get comparable bang for considerably less bucks using the latest GPU/accelerator/co-processor cards that are out there today. Just a small matter of programming, to either implement an alternative processing path, or emulate a Rocket in software.

Red was selling "battle tested" Rockets for 3K a while back. If my RR card dies, it makes sense to buy a battle tested one with a 90 day warranty on a major credit card. That way I get 1 year plus 90 days of warranty coverage and have one good RR card and one dead RR card. Should the price of repair of the card ever come down or can be repaired by another party, then I am way ahead of the game. I do finnd Red repair costs rather high. Example: to repair only the firewire port on one Red 320GB drive Red wants $500, which is more than 50% of the purchase price. Hope Red repairs become a bit more reasonable in the future.

For whatever it's worth, I just had a Radeon HD 5870 (bought direct from Apple), die on me. Lasted 9 months and while it costs considerably less than the other Rockets we've bought, still a bummer to have a card fail. It does happen, it's not isolated to RED Rockets, and it sucks every time. The key is in the support. I'd love to know how RED handles these kinds of issues, but from reading between the lines, it sounds like they do a fair if not admirable job.

Knock on wood we don't have our cards fail, but if they do, here's hoping it would be handled fairly.

My RED ROCKET assembled in Germany by DVS simply ROCKS!!!

Running it from an enclosure that connected to Mac Book Pro 17" and could work for days and weeks without any pause.

Mobile configuration that provides a real time playback, color correction and transcoding to whatever format exists just everywhere and every time on the road.

The enclosure has also Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac and with that I can work with DaVinci Resolve+Tangent Wave+ HP Dreamcolor 30 bit gamut monitor also whereever mobile on the road...

Thunderbolt conects Pegasus 4TB RAID and BM Ultra Studio 3D 3G HD-SDI and HDMI, Audio in/out,...

That's really something else!!!!

Also no any PC crap hardware involved in my configuration!!!!

But if I need also can run PC apps from Booth Camp on Mac BookPro with Lion.

Ok sorry I didn't get back to everyone, and this thread took off... So what happened to my Red Rocket is the connecter pins bent or went down... the reason being that when I put them into the PCI slots on my mac, i didn't secure the PCI card with the metal bracket, and over time gravity took its toll. I also moved my tower a few times, so who knows when it went down. SO BE CAREFUL and secure your red rocket in your PCI slot!

Hey Sanjin,
Just curious, are you getting real time playback at full resolution with the external enclosure?

not assuming anything, just going on what reports I have read which have been quite a few people reporting cards dying even though they are super careful.

Exactly why we shouldn't jump to conclusions..
