  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

If the graphics card fills the available dead slot, how will we get the BNC outputs out of the machine? I thought they were on a separate slot filler?

[admittedly, I haven't been keeping up with this thread as much as I should]
The question I was answering wasn't about the filler. The slot filler can go into another empty slot or not be attached if you don't need the SDI outputs and are using all the other slots. The cables to the filler are 12" long so if you are using all the slots, there's room for creative solutions or drop the filler and use the BOB. Lots of options...

Interesting, thanks for the update.

Any chances of a picture of the filler? Or the internal BNC connections? I'm hoping that I can either remove the BNC connectors from the filler and run them through a hole as cables or the internal connections are something like a mini-DIN connector that I can simply adapt to BNC without needing to use the card.

I'm just hoping that I don't need to buy the breakout box just to get BNC out of my filled-to-the-brim system. :)

BNC's are the standard passthrough/nut type.

Cool... thanks for answering all these questions, Deanan.

Any guesses which day this week it'll ship? Hoping to have it before a job next week. :)

Looks like 10 days...

Jim

We now have about five days left til the first batch of the RR's ship out. When will we see some documents about the product? I just think it's about time for you to start packing the stuff, not finalizing the hardware. Or is this not how you work? ;)

Hey all.

Does anyone know what system that has announced RedRocket support?
I heard Assimilate was the first, but what about FilmLight/DigitalVision/Autodesk/daVinci/Quantel/Apple etc etc

I gues Apple shouldn't be a problem, just put it in and fly away. But for other system, like a BaseLight8 or ResolveR300, witch is a bit more comlex in its structure... have any of them said anything?

I would take a wild gues an put my money on Nucoda being the first of them to support it since its Windows on a "normal" PC

(not affiliated with anyone of the above, although wishing my Resolve had a RedRocket)

guess clipster :)

I saw clipster running in munich on the digitale cinematographie 4k full debayer in realtime playback and encoding to all supported formats. Ted was presenting there footage.... as well on the booth of DVS... if the rocket does the same.... that will be awsome....

acourding to DVS its Not the same (but if it was the same... would they tell us? no) they claim that there debayer/decompresser is by far better then any of the others, even Scratch.
I've heard people being worried that the RedRocket will be realtime, but not Full full full quality. Hmm. From what I can read on this thread its top quality. How much better can it get?

If anyone has a Clipste, and are ordering a RedRocket.. Maybe post some comparision sills?

Don't believe anyone who "knows someone who knows...". Some people just love drama. Why the hell would Red release a product that did a less than perfect job of displaying the footage from their own camera? Makes no sense.

What I "heard" :P is that the DVS Clipster implements exactly RED's deBayer. So the output of this should be binary almost identical to processing the same via the SDK.

I guess this will change over time, as they improve the code here and there, and maybe then they update the Clipster accordingly.

Anyhow, to get this enabled in the Clipster, RED will for sure made rules/sanctions on how the deBayer should be processed to maintain their quality goal.

So I believe that a RED Rocket™ card will be "on par" with the SDK and the Clipster in terms of "decoding quality". I am not at all nervous about this, more relaxed, so to say :)

The only question that remains is how fast the RED Rocket™ will be in a daily workflow. We will hopefully see the answers soon.

And on the bottom line, it doesn't matter if a RED Rocket™ is a RED own development, an OEM thingy, a DVS OEM thingy, or whatever. All that counts is its price/performance for us, the users. Given the announcements, its basically a no-brainer. But we can wait and see :)

Cheers,
Axel

Hey Axel. I too would not be surprised to find the RR and Clipster "similar". Not a bad thing in anyone's books. And I would never suggest that an after market supplier could not come out with a better product than the OEM guys (in this case, Red). But for anyone to suggest that the RR will somehow be hobbled for some reason is just drama-queening. I get a lot of that...:willy_nilly:

maybe it's LINBAYER!!! not. Jim would not do that to his customers. He to uses the gear! stop the drama ;0

The Clipster is so much more, it is a complete system not just a card. It has software that has been maturing for years and offers many other options. Dont confuse the two.

So if I'm understanding correctly,

The RED rocket should allow me to cut a two-camera project in full resolution, real time on a high-grade Mac Pro and then output that to a destination file in real time, correct?

I'm thinking ahead for Scarlet workflow. I may be working with a company that wants to purchase two 3k Scarlets for a fast-turnaround documentary show on public broadcast. "Live workflow" would have to be the key to keeping costs low.
