  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Deenan, as things grow closer to actually shipping, might I ask if this thing will work upstream or downstream with something like FCP? With the relatively small size of R3d media, sending a number of streams to the card would seem easy enough. Do you think it might be possible at some stage for the host app to tell the card which portions of each given R3d clip to process or is it a full frame kinda deal? Also, in an NLE situation, is there the possibility of the card delivering a stream back to the preview window (Canvas in FCP speak) as well as an output to a full screen image (in sync of course)?

I know I should just wait a couple of weeks and see for myself but... I just can't!

The card can definitely send the processed image back to the host application to use. For simultaneous output plus a preview image, we're looking at the best way to do that now.

Is Apple working on integrating the new Rocket-powered SDK in an up-date? Or is it a "wait for FCP 3" type of thing?

There's multiple paths to achieve RED Rocket acceleration in FCP and we're doing them in parallel so we get the best solution out.

Can the application then send the image back to the card (having processed it) for display on the RED Rocket's outputs? Or might it be possible in future to have applications render to eg 4k REDcode RGB, and use the RED Rocket to play that back?

Yes, you can send an uncompressed/rendered image back to the card for display.

Excellent news, and fast response!

While ya here MrD :)

can it playback uncompressed/rendered media and R3D's ie both in same timeline? same rez fps etc...Or is this app specific?

This'll be through the SDK so the app can chose to do either on a frame basis.

Thanks Deanan. You're going to be happy when this thing ships and you can relax. :bath:

Deanan was working all day by himself today at RED (holiday) just to get things buttoned up.. He indeed will be very relaxed when it ships.. for about 5 minutes :)

Are you doing anything similar for Avid Media Composer/Symphony or DS? Thanks.

a question on sending the image back to the card for display on a monitor.

I'm looking into buying HP DreamColor Monitor which has both DVI & HDMI inputs.
am i fine with using just RR DVI out?
are there any additional quality, bit depth etc. in getting Breakout box and using its HDMI outs?

..i remember reading that hdmi is 10bit vs DVI 8? ( http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=363467&postcount=40 ) ....
thanks!

This is getting confusing :-/

Are we saying on a macpro if there is a double height GFX card in the RR is a no-go?

As for a PC for the RR. Whats the current best MB for this if there is to be a double height gfx card in also like a 5800 etc and a BM or AJA card?

Cheers

Totally fine on a macpro with a double high gfx card.

Same on the PC side.

If the graphics card fills the available dead slot, how will we get the BNC outputs out of the machine? I thought they were on a separate slot filler?

[admittedly, I haven't been keeping up with this thread as much as I should]

the breakout box is a separate rack mountable unit which connects to the back of the RR with cables, iirc.

so no issues with extra connectivity once you have the card in your machine.
