  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Hi Hans,

Hans is these days a very rare name. That there a two Hans on these boards is a unpredictable coincidence.

Your app. is a very helpful contribution to the community. Thanks a lot!

Warmest Regards to Switzerland,

Hans von Sonntag (West Germany)

Oh, sorry to both Hans's for the confusion!

Hans,

12. Yo mama (single slot, close to full size with a slot filler for the hd-sdi bnc's)

How do the BNC ports for the slot filler attach to the Rocket card? Is it by a cable so that it can be located in a slot that's not immediately adjacent to the card?

The poor folks installing this into a Mac Pro will want to use a single-slot video card and put the slot filler in the void space above slot-1, so as not to interfere with the 3 precious remaining slots. I may just round up a spare side panel and cut me a hole to route the BNC's out the side.

Oh crap, it's a slot filler? I already have the open slot filled by my RAID controller and its SAS cables. I'm gonna have to hack the thing apart just to get it to fit...

I'm worried about this, too. We have the graphics card, a Fibre card, a Kona card...will the RED Rocket fit? (Latest Mac)

For me, I want to put it in my new Nehalem Mac... But...

If I recall, the ATI 4870 video card only requires the single slot space, but it's been a while since I've looked at it. The new system is actually arriving with that card, but I have the GTX 285 arriving too. Will test and go with the better overall card. I can lose the eSATA card if necessary, but before I'd do that, I'd buy a G5 or Mac Pro case off ebay and cut a hole for the SDI ports into the side panel, use that panel so I don't void my AppleCare. I'd lose the eSATA if I have to as I can connect SATA devices to the ATTO RAID card. I haven't bought a RAID for this Mac Pro yet, so I could go eSATA instead of SAS...

Will the breakout box give HD-SDI ports without using the slot-filler ports?

New Mac Pro arriving any day now.
Slot 1 + option slot - nVidia GTX 285 (or ATI 4870)
Slot 2 - * reserved for RED ROCKET *
Slot 3 - eSATA host
Slot 4 - ATTO R380 SAS RAID controller

Hey Brook, just noticed your signature; "Data Wrangling: Just say no." What's the story there? Just curious:)

Yes, just two cables to the slot filler.

PLEASE POST THESE RESULTS WHEN YOU DO THE TEST! Trying to make
same decision ourselves. When do u get yours?

Thanks! and no, I wasnt screaming, just accidentally hit cap lock

its Sunday

Hey Deenan, Does the breakout box preclude the need for the slot filler?

Hey Deenan, Does the breakout box preclude the need for the slot filler?

The intention behind adding the slot filler is that we didn't want to make people have to buy the BOB if they only needed a single HD output.

If you have the BOB, then you don't really need the slot filler.

Hello,

I have the early 2009 Mac Octo and plan this;

Slot 1: ATI 3870 (upgrade to 4870 or the GTX285 eventually)
Slot 2: Red Rocket
Slot 3: CalDigit HDOne RAID Card (in slot 2 at the moment)
Slot 4: LSI SAS3442E SAS Card (for Quantum LTO-4) (in slot 3 at the moment)

Chatted with the CalDigit guys and they said the HDOne RAID card for a single array only requires 4x. If you get their card with two ports for the HDOne then you need the 8x (obviously).

Hope this will work out. Painful when the PC game machine in the corner has more 16x slots on it than my Mac Pro. Sigh. Apple... how you give the faithful fits of seizures.

Best,

ATF

I'll check as soon as I have time to open my Mac Pro but someone just told me
that:

there are only two auxiliary power cable connections on the power supply,

:crying: AND that both the ATI 4870 and the NVidia 285 GTX both use two power cables,

:crying: AND both take up two slots.

:head_explode:
I may have to keep the 8800GT!

PC based users with 8core i7:

I am set up with Adobe CS4.1 and I like what I've experienced so far. Where do you see the Red Rocket fitting into this setup?

After you have the footage in Adobe which is instant and you do your offline with your transitions and color adjust etc you still have to render out of Adobe using your CPU and GPU.

Where the Rocket would come in handy, for my personal setup is if you are the intermediate and someone rents my camera and they want to edit in Avid I could poof that out using the RedRocket.

Now if Adobe After Effects can utilize this card to render out the 4K to lets say 1080P and use the Rocket for that load and use the cpu and gpu for the transitions and color.

or

Use Redcine, do basic color adjust and then poof it out to whatever size you want, then go into Adobe... ok... I admit I am confused now....

Deanan,

Will the Rocket be capable of two 2k streams for stereo playback or will you need multiple cards for multiple streams?

Will there be a read buffer to accommodate dissolves, etc. of some length?

Will you be able to use multiple cards in conjunction with one another?

Thanks,

:J

Scarlet and a prosumer outlook

Scarlet and a prosumer outlook

What would make it as easy as pie for Red to convince a prosumer to go with the Scarlet?

A prosumer edition of the Red Rocket?

In theory, yes, however we haven't gotten to that stage yet.
It's something we intend to test/implement.

Will I be able to use a Kona 3 in the same MacPro?

Not tested but it should work.
