  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Yeah I ditto that! Will there be a way for old time SD CRTs to monitor the RR output for color fidelity? As there is no solution at the moment where you can trust a 4K monitor/projector for color grading?

Panasonic 11 series should be good with one of the DVI outputs -- use a DVI to HDMI cable. As for older CRTs, that will involve some form of conversion. And at that point, you're at the mercy of whatever converter you are using and how it will convert and adapt color information.

will there be a way to use Red Rocket with monitors like the Panasonic 11 series, with component inputs? I'm hoping I don't have to drop the $2,400 to get the HD-SDI board for the 11 series monitor to use it with red rocket...

Zak, that board also gives You 2K input and 10-bit color support...
Worth every cent in my opinion...

:) Peter

Do you know if this will directly drive a 30" cinema display at 2560 x 1600 or 2.5 K?

Also, didn't notice this before but it looks like the 30" is just buried in the Apple Store but no where to be found on the "Mac" Tab which only talks about the LED Cinema Display. Hopefully that means New Hardware coming soon! Maybe 40" at 4K?

Has any one tested Red Rocket with a Matrox Axio LE card?

If no one else has, I'd be happy to test it for realtime performance, and for transcoding to the Matrox codec.

Luki, I assume there will be no longer the need for sdi nvidia daughter board when using rrocket w scratch?

I dont see how you can lay off to a deck with no sync input.

From what I understand the RR can send out 4k.

It cannot debayer to 4K and feed that 4k to an app, only to a monitor

It can debayer 4k and feed an app 2k in RT

So in theory as the CPU's arn't getting hammered if the RR debayers and scales to 2k or 1080 and feeds that back to FCP I see no reason why that can then not be sent out from the blackmagic card.

Does it work with Mistika 4K? it would be outstanding to be able not only to color grade 4K DPX in real time but also R3D

So many questions, so few answers. This product has me more excited than anything RED has released since the initial RED ONE. I have a giant favor to ask... please have a monster manual ready when this ships. I know the answers will be sorted out here and elsewhere over time but there is nothing like a really solid user guide.

That makes no sense and we have already been told otherwise. It will do a full debayer and give any supporting app / RED SDK access to that data. So this will greatly reduce render and transcode times. A lot depends on how the supporting app requests and deals with the image data.

Make sense to me. But I think for many, having a BMD or AJA card in the system along with the Rocket may be a little redundant. Then again, the Rocket doesn't have any form of external input (that we're aware of) and we still don't have answers as to control and sync as well as support for segmentation (psf modes), which most HDCAM and other HD decks require.

Hopefully RED is putting together a nice PDF or product brochure for this thing that gives us detailed specs and info.

A very latest spec Mistika can grade directly from R3D at 2K in real time with no intermediate rendering.

The question is, should you ever try and post produce RED footage at "4K"? Remember that the term "4K" when used with RED is a bayered image whereas the same term in post production is a full file. Personally, I would not advise working at higher than "2K" (post production term) because that file format will handle all the visual data that the RED ONE camera will practically generate at "4K" (Bayered term). A 4K post workflow will just quadruple the transfer times without significantly increasing quality.

We just got word earlier on Friday from Jarred that RED is going to allow Silverado to sell RED Rocket directly. More info here:

We're really excited about this product and its an honor to be able to count a RED item among our inventory.

That is great news. It would be awesome actually having a product we could buy. So far in queue for RED 18-85, RPP (for over 2 years) and now waiting on the RED rocket. I pray to God this card can be pumped out in quantity.

Red Rocket support will be integrated into the SDK so developing for it will be pretty simple for anyone building with the current SDK.
